Cabaret Night At Meikles - a fun fundraiser for Mukuvisi Woodland.

May's two-evening Cabaret Night At Meikles will be a fun tribute to young Zimbabwean entertainers - and a chance to raise funds for Mukuvisi Woodland, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary! The event takes place on Thursday May 12 and Friday May 13 in the hotel's Stewart Rooms. Night one features a full cabaret show cafe style, with canapes for all guests and an evening of fun, laughter and fund-raising for Mukuvisi. Night two will feature a four-course dinner plus the show and all the trimmings. On both nights there will be prize draws and fun activities. The show will feature the ZimZim Acrobats, a talented group of young folk who do amazing routines, as well as Danzation, a stunning line-up of dancers from the National Ballet who have just performed at HIFA 2005 with a top production at the Rainbow 7 Arts Theatre. Top of the bill will be 5Star, made up of five up-and-coming stars who recently appeared in Debbie Fleming's amazing Boy Bands Blockbusters at Reps Theatre. Costs will be $160 000 per person for night one and $280 000 per person for night two. Bookings for the dinner show can be made direct with Meikles Hotel (telephone Harare 707721, e-mail marketing@meikles.com or banqueting@meikles.com) while bookings for night one can be made by return e-mail to this address or by calling Evey, Joseph or Dean at (04) 443289-91. Join us for a superb evening out, and a chance to forget about all your troubles at the cabaret.

Please pass this on to friends, too!

CRIME AWARENESS BULAWAYO UPDATE written and compiled by Tracey Burns 06/05//05
As mentioned in previous updates - Trade Fair was coming up and guess what - the gangs appeared from every corner of the country, plus other countries!!

Cars were stolen from the Trade Fair but no concrete figures given to me yet, homes broken into during broad daylight, people being attacked both in broad daylight and night time, house break-ins with various electrical items and cars stolen, and dogs being poisoned and killed. Dogs are being poisoned in the following areas: Lockview, Ilanda, Hillside, Kumalo - LOCK your dogs in-doors or in a secure area that no meat can be thrown over to them. Dogs are pets, unless you have had them trained to deal with burglars - look after them, they will warn you, but is their little lives really worth the terrible death they go through when poisoned.

HOW GOOD IS YOUR SECURITY AT HOME
1 Are all external doors fitted with deadlocks?
2 Is your patio door fitted with locks at the top and the bottom?
3 Are all windows fitted with some sort of security lock?
4 Do you lock the doors and close and lock all windows before you go out?
5 Do you keep external doors locked when you are in the garden or garage?
6 Is your perimeter alarm on all the time?
7 Do you always use the door chain or limiter when opening the door?
8 Do you either own an alert dog or have a burglar alarm system fitted to your home?
9 Would you know if the identity document presented by an alleged policeman or council worker was false?
10 Are your windows screened so that people on the street cannot see into your rooms?
11 Can you reach a panic button from anywhere in your home within a few seconds?
12 Are any of your lights connected to a time switch?
13 Do you tell a neighbour or family friend when you go away on holiday?
14 Do you keep firearms in a secret hiding place, where an intruder can't find them?
Taken from Reader's Digest - Safe, Secure and Streetwise
The following has been reported to me and I would like people to become more aware:
- A Metallic Blue minibus with the registration number: 789-947 M tinted windows has been seen moving on the Matopos Road between Cecil and 23rd Avenues. I do believe this vehicle was involved with a serious house robbery where the owner and visitors were badly beaten. Keep a look out for this vehicle.
- Another suspicious car at present is around the Hillside/ Burnside Road near to Mater Dei Hospital it is a Red Mazda 323 Registration Number: 816-314 F 4 men sitting inside observing the goings on along that road.
With suspicious vehicles report to me or to the police.
- There are two different individuals, one called Felix, small with a broad smile and pleasant manner and the other Teddy, who both have conned people to employ them as a temporary gardeners. Both these men at different homes walked off with garden tools, petrol cans, bicycles etc and only discovered by the employers when the men did not arrive for work on that particular day. Please, public, these men are excellent conmen and we will be faced with many more due to the increase in inflation and many more gardener/domestic jobs that have become available. Check and take down their ID's before employing and even go to the point of getting them vetted by the police.
- Another, that totally exasperated me was when a woman stated how she was approached at some shops by a man who had some sort of medicine and was asked to sell it to a private hospital. The man knew the pharmacist's name (which he could pick up just by chatting to the receptionist) and said that the pharmacist will buy it but will the person translate from German into English the composition of the medicine. In the end the person said she would take it to the hospital for him and get the money from the pharmacist. As surety, the man asked for the woman's jewellery and cell phone which she gave to him. She then went to the hospital and was informed by the pharmacist that it was just water with food dye in the bottle and that they buy directly from their legal suppliers, not from anyone off the street. Racing back to the shops the woman looked for the conman who was no where in sight. DON"T BE TAKEN IN BY ANYONE!

BLOOD DATA BANK

In light of the tragedy in Harare last week l have decided to try and get as much information together as possible as far as peoples blood types are concerned. If M-Web do set up a data base here in Bulawayo l recommend we all put our names and information on that as well.

What l would like to do is get peoples names, contact numbers and blood type (plus any other information you may deem relevant). I will then collate the information and email you all copies of names and numbers for people who share your respective blood type. The only pre-requisite for joining this "information centre" would be that if you are called and available you agree to donate blood and not back out at the last minute.

Please feel free to forward this to as many of your friends and family as you would like.
I look forward to hearing from you and will send out the information as soon as l have compiled it.
Yours Sincerely
Rosy Shearing

Bulawayo Public Library is one of the few social services still operating to a high standard in the city, but is suffering from a huge drop in its grant income because its City Council grant, which formerly covered 50% of its running costs, has now shrunk to less than 1% due to inflation.

Although the Library has increased its charges and started new services such as an Internet cafe, which has seen income increase from Z$6 million in 2002 to Z$350 million in 2004, staff salaries are now only half the amount paid to staff in other local libraries and we are seeing senior staff leave to work in the Municipal Libraries, which pay double the Public Library salaries.

The Public Library currently has 17,000 users - the highest it has ever had in its history, and close to 300,000 books are borrowed every year, but inflation and the resulting drop in the value of grants are making it difficult to survive.

We think there are many people who read your magazine who are past or present members of the Library but who don't realise the problems it faces. The Library is not run by the Municipality or the Government, it is a co-operative owned and run by its own members, and is registered as a charity, so there is no parent body to go to for help.
We would like to hear from any of your readers who might be willing to make even a small donation to help sustain the Library. Z$ payments can be made by cheque payable to Bulawayo Public Library, 100 Fort Street, Bulawayo, and payments outside Zimbabwe can be paid to the account of the Librarian, Robin W. Doust, at HSBC Bank, 59 High Street, Tenterden, Kent, TN30 6BE, U.K., a/c no 61042653. Any reader making a payment into this a/c is asked to advise Mr. Doust by e-mail at robinwdoust@hotmail.com so that a suitable receipt and thanks can be sent to the donor from the Library.
The Library provides a unique service to the whole of Bulawayo community, including Braille books for blind readers, video tapes, student textbooks, children's books, a public Internet service, talking books on cassettes, recreational reading, an educational advisory service, mobile libraries serving 33 local primary schools, and a good reference department, Bulawayo needs a service like this badly, and would appreciate any help which might be forthcoming from Morning Mirror readers to sustain it.

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help.

I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.
