NEWS FROM PERFORMING ARTS
We had sent out a note mentioning that the Performing Arts AGM would take place next week on Wednesday 13 April. For various reasons that date is no longer suitable so we have moved the meeting to WEDNESDAY 18 MAY at 1.15 p.m. in the Wakeford Room of the Bulawayo Club. Drinks and a snack lunch will be available beforehand in the Atrium and we will give more details with a reminder before the meeting.

Many of you will have known Cecil Cranswick and have heard the sad news of his death in Cape Town a week ago. Among many other things, he was a great supporter of music, a member of the council of the Academy of Music and, of course, vice-chairman of Performing Arts for over twenty-five years. But music was only one of his many interests and his passing will leave gaps in many organisations and many people's lives. His funeral was in Cape Town last Saturday but there will be a memorial service for him at the Church of the Ascension on Friday 15 April at 3.30 p.m. to which everyone is, of course, very welcome.

A newsletter will follow in the next few days with subscription details and as many precise dates as we can manage to give. We now have the PAB programme for the year more or less in place (and much of next year!) and hope to offer you seven or eight concerts including a return visit by the New England Youth Ensemble who this time will have a choir with them as well, ninety performers altogether!

Mrs Burk and Mrs Clarkson both from Garden Park need to apply for Zimbabwe passports. Anyone willing to assist them with the formalities in obtaining a passport, please contact them directly.
Speak to Mrs Jan Wright in the Garden Park office on 254049.

S.O.A.P. (Supporting Old Age Pensioners)

We would like to advise all our kind donors and other interested parties that the administrative side of S.O.A.P., has now moved from Clark Road. Due to increasing business pressures and the fact that he is often out of town attending to farming projects, Mr Pete Abbot has, with regret, decided that he is unable to give S.O.A.P., the time that it needs, but, wishes to hand over the 'reigns' so that SOAP can continue helping our needy Bulawayo pensioners. He will however, still be involved in fund raising events, particularly in the sporting area.

Our new telephone number is 242455, during the hours of 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday only. In cases of emergencies contact can be made direct to Dave Gill on 023 407 955. Our new box number is; AC 646 ASCOT. We can also be contacted by e-mail at; soap@netconnect.co.zw . These will be the ONLY changes and, deliveries will carry on as normal on the second Wednesday of each month ably assisted as always, by Becky Kay & Trish Wood.

S.O.A.P., now delivers to around 150 addresses monthly and the cost of one single parcel in early March was Z$203,775, a double parcel being Z$383,550. As can be seen this represents a huge total outlay every month and we have also increased the size of parcels as much as we possibly can. Incomings now exceed outgoings and we are drawing on capital. We ask donors past, present, and future to remember S.O.A.P., and all the people that are helped, some who have nothing, we have one pensioner who has a pension of $700 (yes, seven hundred) a month. We thank Hillside Hardware which continues to have a drop off point for goods to be left, also S.O.A.P., cash collection bottles are at Induna Arts, River Cafe, Hillside Hardware, Busters Sports Club and other points. The storage shed belonging to SOAP will remain at 51 Clark Road and all grocery donations can also be left there with Lazarus who will issue a receipt. Any monetary donations can either be sent to PO box AC 646 Ascot or, please telephone either of the above numbers for collection. Groceries can also be collected. All of us would like to say a huge thank you, to you, the generous people and businesses of Bulawayo for enabling S.O.A.P., to continue now and in future years assisting people who, although having provided for what should be their 'golden years' now face extreme hardships.

"Unconditional Happiness"

Happiness is not the result of favourable conditions. That's backwards. Favourable conditions result from happiness. So what does it take to be happy? Nothing more than a willingness to be happy.

Happiness comes from the way you respond to life. There are people who have every reason to be miserable, but who still live with happiness and joy. In every life, there is room for happiness.

Everyone has challenges. Everyone has disappointments. Yet they do not have to get you down. True happiness comes not from the absence of problems. True, enduring happiness comes in spite of the problems.

Happiness is not a reaction, it is a choice. Let it be yours.

THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD
You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
Being away doesn't help when your heart lies in Bulawayo.
'He who drinks of the Zambezi will return one day."

This is my hope and eventual prayer. We have now visited Scotland. What a beautiful mystical Country and it made me so homesick for the Vumba and Nyanga. where I found such happiness and peace. Then you spoke of the Matopos, and there is where we grew up and we will always love. The Matopos has a magic no where on earth has. Our hearts will return. Love Jane, Scott and Charlene.

CRIME AWARENESS BULAWAYO UPDATE written and compiled by Tracey Burns 11/04/05

Every time I seem to say it is quiet, then suddenly people get in touch with me as to what has happened to them, sometimes three weeks before. Please, always notify me of the incident whether it is immediately, that it has taken place or even a few weeks down the line. I am here to help you cope with the situation and advise as best as I possibly can.

HOUSES
Armed robberies have started up again, with people getting attacked and women threatened with rape. Unfortunately, these baddies know how well to intimidate people, and really my best advice is, don't resist when they ask for your car keys, forex, money, electrical items etc. but naturally a woman will resist when it comes to rape. I, certainly would at any level, even if it means me getting injured with a weapon or their physical brute force. I strongly suggest with women staying in this country, to go for self defence courses, which gives you the confidence to protect yourself even more. If you are interested, I can give you a few names of people who do excellent self defence courses. Just give me a call.
I want to reiterate again, please do the following:
- Keep gates closed at all times, even if you are expecting guests, get them to call you from the cell if they are just round the corner or you wait around the garden until they arrive, so that the gates can be opened and closed quickly.
- Keep security/wrought iron gates closed at all times too.
- If you are in one section of the house, keep the rest of the house closed.
- At night, keep lights on outside or have sensor lights installed.
- Another good thing to get is an adhesive film placed on windows, as this reduces the tendency of glass to shatter on impact. This can be put on homes and in cars.

HIJACKINGS
I have had to deal with one recent hijacking which took place in the suburbs at 14:35 Hours. 3 well dressed men approached the house stating they were looking for someone (mentioning his name). The lady of the house, shouted from the back where they stood at the gate. She went inside and went to a room where she saw them come into the yard with two going towards her car, the other was at her back door. She raced and slammed the door in this man's face, but they managed to break it down, as she was running screaming for help at the front of her garden. She then heard her car start up and she ran around to the side, thinking she would try and grab the keys from the car, but a 4th man appeared with a gun and told her to shut up and lie down, of which she did. Thankfully the police arrived quickly and they found her car due to all the roadblocks that were set up for elections. She received her car the following day. Well done to the police in their quick response, super attitude of calming the lady down and also retrieving the car.

LINE UPS
If anyone states to the police they can identify a criminal, herewith the procedure that you will go through.
The police will call you for an Identification Parade. There will be about 10 men all together, none with shackles or hand cuffs on. You will be taken with some police down to the line up and my suggestion is this, walk once to look at them, and the second time look at them and identify them. If you go a third time, you will start having doubts. When you are certain, you have to touch the man on the shoulder whilst the police take a photograph of the suspect. This is so that the suspect cannot turn around in court and state "he was not the one", as the photograph is now evidence. Shocked aren't you - there is only ONE one-way mirror, in Harare for the child victim friendly court. This is not the movies people, and South Africa only started putting in one-way mirrors a few years ago. The trauma that the victim has already suffered with, will be compounded even more with this ID parade, so I suggest you get a close friend or relative to go with you. If you do not do this, these guys will be put out on the street again. These guys are very cunning in how they try to deceive one. If they were shaven, they will let their hair grow, whether it is head or facial. They will either look at you with absolute hate, or innocence or just lower their eyes. You do what you have to in order to try and make sure you can recognise them, whether they stood a particular way, wore something that you know, anything.

URGENT SPONSORSHIP
Though we managed to raise $ 13 Million through our golf sponsorship day, I require at least 60 companies that could sponsor $ 100 000-00 a month to help with salaries, and office expenses for the Bulawayo office. Harare used to assist, but feel that Bulawayo community must now help the Bulawayo office entirely, so that means I am alone and require some sort of substantial salary and money to give to helpers that come along every now and again and naturally victims who might need some sort of assistance. Please, if you feel that you can assist, this will be of invaluable help to me. Just email me and I will send you a form to fill in as a regular sponsor.

HOT LINES
Tracey Burns direct: 011-701 323
Immediate assistance: 62611 EMRAS and information passed onto Police

SUPPORT GROUP
Please keep the third Tuesday of every month free at 1:30 pm, for the support group if you are a victim of hijacking, attempted hijack and house robberies. We are there for each other and we do not charge victims who contact us for care-giving. So please call me to confirm you are attending. The service is all free, that is why we depend on the public and private sectors to help us survive.

TALKS
Please contact me for any talks for schools, companies, groups or questions on individual security, etc on crime@mweb.co.zw or cell phone no: 011-701 323 for your bookings.
