At about ten past seven on Tuesday evening, was going out to a music
recital. I unlocked the back gate at Pharmacy Flat, where I live, and
started the car. I backed out into the servitude as usual, and left the
engine running while I locked the gate. As I was doing so, someone came
up quickly, got into the car, and locked the door from the inside. I
shouted a screamed but he drove off and doing so knocked me flying. My
maid, who happened to be across the road came rushing over and with a
friend pulled me up, bleeding profusely. The police were called, and
were there within minutes. They were very helpful and kind, and took me
to the Hillside Police station, where I made quick statement, and then
brought me home. I had sustained a bad gash on the back of the head,
hence all the blood, some damage to the ribs, and a nasty graze on my
right side. However, with the known merit of a thick skull, I have
survived but am now without transport.
I am working part time as a production pharmacist at Wallace
Pharmaceuticals. I can in fact walk there, as I have done often, (it
takes just under an hour each way) but just at present I don't think I
am quite up to it, especially with the very hot weather.
I am therefore wondering if there is anyone who is reading this who
might by any chance know of any way I could find some wheels. I am not
even a pensioner - I subscribed to a scheme for 50 years, and that pays
now for a quarter of a bottle of beer a month - so I am fully dependant
on my employment. I thus cannot afford daily taxis or whatever, or even
to buy a bike! This letter is just a wild thought.

SNIPPET FROM TAX GUARDIAN
Zimra holds a Statement of Card for every taxpayer. This card should
reflect every assessment, every amended assessment and every payment.
We have recently been inundated with demands from Zimra for payment. We
requested Statements of Card, and on reconciliation discovered the
following errors: -
1. Although every debit of every assessment was reflected, not every
credit arising from an amended assessment was reflected.
2. Not all payments were reflected. In one case nine different receipts
were not recorded on the card.
3. In cases where a cheque payment was made but the taxpayer held no
corresponding receipt, no credit was recorded, and we had to obtain
copies of bank statements to prove that the cheques had been honoured.
4. We checked all the journal entries to ensure that our client's
payment had not been journalised out of his card and put on somebody
else's card.
5. Interest journals were not correct.
6. The correct due date was not posted on the card. During 2000, 2001
and 2002 there were times when assessments were posted after the due
date and a cyclostyled slip was attached reflecting a new due date.
This new due date was not reflected on the card. Our client was charged
interest, not because he had paid late, but because one Zimra official
posted his assessment late and another official failed to record the
new due date on his card.
Every bookkeeper/Accountant should request a copy of their firm's card
at least once a year and reconcile all entries.
Every other taxpayer should check their card twice yearly to ensure
there are no surprises.

STOLEN WHEELS:
In case anyone has seen us travelling through town in a white bakkie
with a
horse on the back - it's because all four wheels were stolen off our
horse
box from Greyville on the night of Thursday 28th October. As business
has
to continue in order for us to survive, we do what we have to do to
make
things happen! The tyres were brand new, and marked with a white
circle and
the name "Greyville" painted on each tyre in white enamel paint.
Should
anyone see our white 5-stud wheels and tyres please give us a call as
we are
offering a reward for their return and for the perpetrators to be
brought to
justice. Many thanks.
