THE DIARY OF AN AFRICAN PRINCESS

by Michele Macmillan
On Thursday 21 October
At the Polocrosse Club House Bulawayo Country Club Esigodini Rd At 6pm Snacks * Cash Bar

This often amusing and sometimes cynical account of the first year experiences of a new Australian immigrant forms a refreshing point of reference for new migrants, potential migrants and even those who have decided to stay in their homeland. ìNo one recognised my status as a Princess. I was required to do things I would never have imaginedî Shonkey operators, skanky boyfriends, feral neighbours, dobbing in and Aussie Rules all form part of her initiation into Australian society.

ANTI HIJACK TRUST

BULAWAYO UPDATE

Hijackings and attempted hijackings are on the rise again, I think due to the approaching festive season. Two incidences that I would like to make the public aware of, are the following:

Mrs A withdrew a large amount of money for salaries from the bank 2 weeks ago and then drove off to 4th Avenue area to buy material. As it was incredibly hot, the window was down, and as she parked the car a middle-aged woman dressed as an apostolic leant on the car and offered her forex. As Mrs A was saying no, she did not want any forex, this woman opened up the back door. With that, a man climbed in behind Mrs A and then this woman. The man held something into her back ordering her to start the car, but thankfully Mrs A had the presence of mind to put the gear lock on and throw the keys "away". She held her hands up and stated quite categorically that she was not going to start the car, with that he jumped out the other back door and into the front of the car. Again Mrs A said she was not going to start the car, but they could have everything else, that was in the car. The criminals panicked and took the money which was in the millions from under the seat. Only when they started climbing out of the car did Mrs A realise there was another young, apostolic woman in the car with her, so altogether there were 3 criminals that had climbed into her car. They took off in a Taxi as their get away car.

The second incident took place on the Beit Bridge Road where Mrs B landed up having a flat tyre. She stopped the car with her 2 young, female passengers sitting inside and thankfully a driver she knew came past and changed the tyre. Whilst this was been done, 2 young men came walking past and offered to help, of which she declined. They walked around the car and then turned back to where they came from. As the ladies were getting back into the car and the driver had taken off, these 2 men came back, but met up with a third man who came out of the bushes. They walked past the car and as one of the young ladies was saying I don't trust this 3rd man, he came up behind the car and banged it with his hand. They drove off and a little later, had another flat. When they jumped out of the car, to look, they saw that it had been stabbed with a knife or screwdriver. As they were examining this, a car pulled up with these men inside who robbed them of all their luggage and handbags etc. and drove off.

The above 2 cases, are normal modus operandi, but have not taken place of late. Again I urge people to travel with other people ie. convoy or in town definitely have another person in the car with you. If you cannot do this, you must be extremely aware of where you stop along the route and who is around your car. Driving your car on a flat will damage the rim, but at least you are still in motion.

This brings me to another point. Since we, as the public are told not to use cell phones in banking halls, I think the same should apply to the tellers on duty. I know of 3 banks where tellers have the cell phones on and do answer calls whilst working. How then do we know they are not involved with the gangs outside the building telling them who has withdrawn a large amount of money. Rules must apply to all, employees and customers. Again I urge the public, if you feel that you were followed from a bank you must talk to their internal security as soon as possible. One bank in Main Street is being highlighted by a number of people to me and I am very concerned about your safety once outside the bank. BE AWARE at all times.

Fife Street and Robert Mugabe Street are still a big concern as well, as there are gangs of between 5 and 7 that are banging on windows, distracting the driver and stealing anything that is in sight on the seat or lap. They are also slashing tyres and following the car until the driver discovers they have a flat. Please do not sit in the car with windows down (even if it is boiling hot outside), rather get out of the car if you are waiting for someone and lock it. This pertains to people outside takeaways, pharmacies and schools.

IF anyone sees a car without a number plate or registration number being displayed, please inform me as to the make, model and colour and where you saw it last, so that I can start making a data list to hand over to the police to deal with that particular car. Even if you see people changing number plates, please inform me of the two different numbers and again where that took place. We are getting too casual in just accepting things that actually are required by law i.e. showing number plates, windows that are of dark tint that you cannot see inside, is totally illegal! If we start as concerned citizens and state information to the police, eventually something will be done about it.

My wish list continues I am afraid:
I am desperate for a wall map of Bulawayo (preferably mounted) so that the Trust can build up and mark areas of attacks and hijackings - the more information we have to hand, the more we can help you the public.
I still require funding of my telephone bill, which is climbing higher and higher each month with each victim and the police I talk to.
If you require speeches for your group, or companies and a fun talk to primary school children on hijacking and house robberies, please do not hesitate to contact me on 011-701 323 or email me on crime@mweb.co.zw WE have a super support group that is there for you the victim, so come for a shoulder to lean on, listening ear or a laugh. This month we are meeting on the 19th October 2004 at 1:30 pm please contact me for more details.
I want to start organising a little Christmas Party for victims and sponsors with their families on the 06 December 2004, and I really would like people to come forward to donate or sponsor the following:
venue where families with various age children can enjoy drinks snacks facility to send out invites
Remember, this ordeal that they have all suffered, affects not only them but the community as a whole, and who knows you might land up being one of the sponsors coming to a wonderful party, bringing us together again. Thank you to those members of public who have contributed towards the Trust this last month, but this is an ongoing effort to raise awareness, thus we always need money like every other organisation. Once again thank you.
Take care and keep safe Trace Burns

at Harker Hall alongside St John's Cathedral, George Silundika Street, 6th Avenue.

All books in good condition are welcome, though we know from experience that hard back novels (apart from sets of classics) and Encyclopedia sets are very hard to sell. Please help us to establish the Secondhand Book Fair as an annual event on the Bulawayo cultural calendar.

Hubby and I both had to get several new sets of glasses recently for different reasons. I asked our optician about donating the old sets/frames (as previously) but they said that "nobody seems to do that anymore". Thought that rather strange with glasses so expensive now but asked around and no practical response so eventually sent most with load of jumble for SPCA. Whilst SPCA and animal conservation my personal favourites, I try to support various charities and causes with "appropriate things" and felt glasses/specs rather wasted at SPCA. Do Edith Duly have a facility or contact for this? There must be so many people out there that need specs but can't afford?
