CHRISTIANS TOGETHER FOR JUSTICE AND PEACE

'We just been talking to Piers Lane who arrived in Harare this morning so it seemed a good time to remind you of his concert this coming Thursday! The programme is as follows:

Scriabin: 10 Preludes from Opus 11
Henselt: 12 Etudes de Salon, Opus 5
Chopin: 2 Nocturnes, Opus 27
2 Waltzes: F # minor, Op Post; C # minor, Opus 64/2
Rachmaninov: Variations on a Theme of Chopin, Opus 22
THURSDAY 16 SEPTEMBER AT 7.30 P.M. ~ ROBERT SIBSON HALL
ADVANCE BOOKING AT MEIKLES - OR AT THE DOOR FROM 7.00 P.M.

Several people have asked me about Henselt and his music. He was a contemporary of Liszt and Wagner (1814-1889, to be precise) and was regarded as one of the greatest 19th century pianists... well, here's part of the programme note if you want to know more!
He also suffered more than any from a stage fright which grew steadily worse, and it seems that he made no more than three public appearances in the last thirty years of his life. Most of his career was spent in St.Petersburg at the court of three successive czars after his triumph as a visiting concert pianist in 1838 had led to his immediately being named Court Pianist. For the next fifty years he spent all but the summer months in the Russian capital, becoming in addition Inspector General of all the royally endowed musical institutions in Russia in 1863. His technical prowess was immense and many fine pianists have abandoned his compositions in despair. After working on the present Etudes and the F minor Concerto for a few days, Anton Rubinstein admitted defeat, claiming that Henselt's writing was "based on an abnormal formation of the hand... In this respect, Henselt, like Paganini, was a freak". But this was not the case, and, indeed, Henselt apparently had small hands with short fingers, but relentless, obsessive practice gave him an amazing degree of elasticity so that he could comfortably play five note chords covering an octave and a half: "Leather!", he would say, "just look how it is stretched". By 1832 he had got into the habit of working at the piano for ten hours a day and during a recital, even between items, he would leap to his muffled practise piano in the wings and keep his fingers working. In later life he began his practise every morning with a series of preludes and fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier whilst simultaneously reading the Bible.

He wrote comparatively little but his sole concerto is a superb piece and his two sets of studies attracted a good deal of attention in their day. Although posing different problems from those in Chopin s two sets, they very much maintain the concept of exercises wrapped in poetry. Most of the set Piers will be playing have poetic titles in tune with the romantic feeling increasingly coming to dominate music at this time - they include Eroica, Witches' Dance, Ave Maria, Thanksgiving after a Storm, Elves' Dance, Vanished Happiness, Love Song and Nocturnal Procession of Spectres.

KIDNEY DONOR NEEDED (a gift of life) O Positive or O Negative Blood Group

This is a desperate plea to anyone out there who may be willing and kind enough to donate a kidney to my sister.

I am from a family of 4 girls. My older sister, Lal, was diagnosed with polycystic kidneys 14 years ago. This is an hereditary disease. Our grandmother died from a kidney related anuerism at the early age of 50 and my other sister also died from an anuerism as a result of the kidney disease. She was only 21.

Lal's kidney function, due to the disease, has now deterioted to 15% which means she needs to have a transplant as soon as possible. She is just 54 and has been very ill for the last 8 years. She is a wonderfully cheerful and optimisitc person and very very brave. Many kind friends have tested for her, but to no avail. I have tested compatible but sadly am not a likely donor. My younger sister is not sufficiently compatible. Lal is on the kidney donor list which extends to at least 4 years and she has just recently gone on to dialysis. I have heard in the past of wonderful people wanting to help and give organs as "a gift of life". Maybe you are that person. Lal can take an O Positive or O Negative Blood Group. She lives in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. It is a wonderful thing to be able to give a 'gift of life'. I am just hoping and praying that maybe someone, somewhere in South Africa or anywhere else in the world for that matter, is willing to donate a kidney to Lal. If you are, please contact me with your details on sconolly@bigpond.net.au
