IT IS 19 HOURS OF UNADULTERATED HELL UNLESS YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH NOT TO TRAVEL CATTLE CLASS. HE WHO MUST BE OBEYED AND I HAVE HAD TO SUFFER THROUGH THIS TRIP SEVERAL TIMES TO VIST SHE WHO MUST SING AND WE THOUGHT WE HAD IT DOWN TO A FINE ART... UNTIL THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW AIRBUS.... IN THE OLD TRANSATLANTIC 747 WE HAD SUSSED OUT ALL THE BEST CATTLE CLASS SEATS AND KNEW EXACTLY WHERE THE FEW COMFORT ZONES WERE. THE SEATS BY THE EXIT ROWS, THE SEATS IN FRONT OF THE BULKHEAD WHERE THERE WAS A LITTLE MORE LEG ROOM , AND WE OFTEN MANAGED TO SECURE THOSE SEATS, SMUG IN OUR EXTRA TINY BIT OF COMFORT WE WOULD LORD THE HOURS AWAY WITH OUR LEGS STRETCHED OUT IN THE MOST UNSEEMLY FASHION.... BUT THE CAME THE AIRBUS AND THE CONFIGURATION HAD US IN A QUANDARY. NOT KNOWING THE ROPES, WE FAILED TO OBTAIN OUR NORMAL SEATS BUT THE ULTIMATE IRONY CAME WHEN WE NOTICED THAT THE PLANE WAS CHOCK A BLOCK WITH AN ENTIRE TOUR LOAD OF SWEET LITTLE OLD FOLK. NOW I LOVE OLD PEOPLE, THEY ARE ALWAYS POLITE, ALWAYS PATIENT, ALWAYS FORGIVING, BUT THIS TOUR I AM SURE MUST HAVE BEEN ADVERTISED AS "OCTOGENARIANS PARADISE" OR ALTERNATELY "ZIMMER FRAME SPECIAL".... THE YOUNG LADY BOOKING US IN OBVIOUSLY HAD NO PLANE PLAN ON HER COMPUTER SCREEN OR SHE WOULD NOT HAVE BOOKED US FREQUENT FLYERS INTO ROW 59 SEATS F AND G. EITHER THAT OR SHE MUST HAVE HEARD THAT I WAS BELONGED TO THE PRESTIGIOUS CLUB CALLED THE FELONS WIVES CLUB, BECAUSE THESE SEATS WERE WITHOUT DOUBT THE BOOBY PRIZE. YES I KNOW ALL SEATS IN CATTLE CLASS ARE CRAMPED AND HE WHO MUST BE OBEYED HAS SHOULDERS LIKE MOHAMMED ALI, BUT WHAT SHE NEGLECTED TO TELL US THAT WE WERE RIGHT NEXT TO THE LOOS !! NOW A PLANE FULL OF OCTOGENARIANS IS BAD ENOUGH, BUT SEATS TWO INCHES FROM THE LOOS IN A PLANE FULL OF OCTOGENARIANS IS NOT A PRETTY SIGHT. FOR A START EVERYTIME THE FLUSH PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, WE NEARLY SHOT OUT OF OUR SEATS LIKE A COUPLE OF MADRID TRAIN TRAVELERS. THE WALLS WOULD VIBRATE IN THE STALL, THE LOOS DOORS OPENED AND CLOSED WITH A KA-PLUNK EVERY FEW MINUTES, AND TRY AS I MAY I COULD NOT STOP MYSELF PICTURING THAT (ALTHOUGH I OBVIOUSLY COULD NOT SEE THROUGH THE THIN PAPER WALLS OF THE PLANE), THERE WAS ALWAYS AN OCTOGENARIAN PRECISELY 8 CENTIMETERS FROM MY HEAD, SITTING ON THE LOO...... NOW THESE DEAR LITTLE OLD GRANNIES AND GRANDPAS, ALL HAILED FROM BATON ROUGE AND IT WAS THEIR FIRST TIME IN AFRICA (AND THEIR LAST) THEY INSISTED ON TELLING US. A GREGARIOUS NATION, AS THEY QUEUED CONSTANTLY, PATIENTLY, URINARILY , SHOULDER TO SHOULDER, FOUR INCHES FROM HE WHO MUST BE OBEYEDS FACE, THEY OBVIOUSLY GOT LONELY AND LOVED TO TRY AND STRIKE UP CONVERSATIONS WITH HIM.... AND SO WE WERE TREATED TO AT LEAST FORTY FIVE ROUNDS OF NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF THEIR GRANDCHILDREN / HOME TOWNS / HOLIDAYS, TWENTY NASALLY DRONING DRAWLY ACCOUNTS OF THEIR LAST TOUR TO THE INCA TRAIL (THEY MUST OFFER A ZIMMER FRAME VERSION !!) AND AS THE TRIP PROGRESSED, TEMPERS BECAME FRAYED, DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS BECAME A GENUINE FEAR FACTOR THE CONVERSATIONS THEY STRUCK UP WITH MY VERY LONG SUFFERING HWMBO, WERE REDUCED TO 'NOW WHEN WE TRAVEL BY DELTA OBLIQUE AMERICAN AIRLINES, ITS NOTHING LIKE THIS" OR an EVEN MORE NERVE LURID DESCRIPTION OF THEIR BOWEL AND BLADDER MOVEMENTS. EVENTUALLY HE WAS FORCED TO DON THE LITTLE MASK THING THEY GIVE YOU IN THE BUDGET BUDDY PACK, AND PRETEND HE WAS ASLEEP TO AVOID EYE CONTACT (OR RATHER BIFOCAL, MAGNIFYING GLASS AND MONOCLE CONTACT !!) WHEN FATE IS CRUEL ITS REALLY CRUEL AND ROW 59 WAS ALSO OBVIOUSLY ALLOCATED TO THE BABY BRIGADE AND (THERE WERE TWO OF THEM AND THEY MUST HAVE BROUGHT THE AVERAGE AGE ON THAT AIRBUS DOWN TO NINETY SEVEN YEARS OLD) SWEET LITTLE GIRLS THEY WERE, WE BOTH LOVE CHILDREN EVEN MORE THAT WE LOVE OLD PEOPLE BUT MAN THESE WEE THINGS HAD LUNGS ON THEM AND WHEN THEY WERE NOT YELLING COS THEIR EARS WERE SORE, THEY WERE YELLING IN DELIGHT AT THE SOUND OF THEIR OWN YELLING. BUT NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, THANK GOODNESS, AND WE HAVE TAKEN A LONG HARD LOOK AT THE AIRBUS FOR NEXT TIME, AND WE KNOW EXACTLY WHERE THE PRIME SEATS ARE FOR FUTURE TRAVEL..... ++++ SMALLS GRANITE VALLEY NURSERY Alan & Eria bradnick In these days we must try to live in as pleasant surroundings as we can. All looked very pretty until you read: " GET RID OF IT NOW" This was the dreaded LANTANA CAMARA. LANTANA CAMARA (Cherry Pie) Poison: Liver toxin Locality: Particularly prevalent in Mashonaland & particularly Mazowe Valley but also in other localities. Clinical signs: Jaundice, photosensitivity, sunburn, peeling skin & liver failure. Treatment: Provide shade. Liver protectants. The Natural Resources Board gave the following information - "LANTANA CAMARA There are many varieties of this attractive shrub, two of which are illustrated (shown on the poster). The small bluish-black fruits are usually sought after by birds, which act as dispersal agents for the seeds which pass unaffected through the alimentary tract. The plant grows very readily from seed & spreads rapidly. Like most delinquents it thrives on neglect. On waste land, road verges & uncultivated ground it can form dense thickets from which the seed spreads to more valuable agricultural grazing areas. LANTANA hedges of all varieties should be cut out & replaced. If necessary keep the LANTANA hedge cut back, whilst establishing a new hedge. On areas of wasteland, uprooting by hand or mechanically, followed by burning is probably the most practical control measure. Where chemical control is economic Herbicides 2.4D & 2,4,5-D are recommended for controlling the young re-growth after slashing. Alternatively, cut stumps may be thoroughly covered with diesel fuel when dry. To achieve effective control everyone must play their part. Don't delay! The only "safe" Lantana is a dead one. Start your war now. " Today we don't appear to be aware of the dangers of this invasive shrub. Travels in Matabeleland show the shrub is appearing with gay abandon - plainly visible after the good rains. The Mbalabala clump has grown with alarming speed into a dense mass. Worringham & Esigodini areas have pretty farm hedges of LANTANA. Hope Fountain area has impenetrable masses. Bulawayo is not immune - the plot next to the Suburbs Squash Court also uses LANTANA CAMARE as a hedge. Obviously the spread is much greater than my little travel area shows. Perhaps with more awareness we can help rid ourselves of this invasive plant. Can we make a difference? The Stockenstroms ++++++++++ MORE LANTANA It has been one of the many issues that Watch Dog have dealt with, and we have appealed to the Council and their Plant Inspector to place warning messages on the Rates Bill, but to no avail. They write back and explain that they are only responsible for public areas, although it is an offence in national terms to allow the plant to exist on one's property. However, they virtually do noting to deal with their zone of jurisdiction. Just this weekend we took up the subject with the Matobo Conservation Committee, and there is research taking place in Pretoria, in the hope that a bug can be found to assist in its eradication. The sandy veld between Fort Usher towards Matobo Mission is heavily invaded, as is the Honde Valley, Urban Bulawayo and many other areas. It is a dreadful curse and must be priority No 1, in terms of eradication of noxious weed. We understand that they may be a Trust based near Chipangali (The Research Station there ?) which is involved. It should also be noted that the leaves are very poisonous indeed and yes, systemic herbicides must be used to kill the root system. It must not be confused (and shouldn't be!) with the other Lantana species commonly found in gardens. Thanks once more for bringing up the subject and for entering the crusade to deal with this menace. Thanks +++++++ Captivity If you put a buzzard in a pen six or eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of his ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten or twelve feet. Without space to run, as is his habit, he will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top. The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash. A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler will be there until it dies unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it com- pletely destroys itself. In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not realizing that if they look up, they'll find the answer. --------- ====== LEGO FOR SALE BOX OF LEGO, INCLUDING 3 TECHNIC MODELS AND INSTRUCTION BOOKS. $150,000 or nearest offer. I have decided to write a few words on why I love Zim, it is in no particular order, I write it down as the thoughts pop in to my mind. I thought of this while one morning I was lying in bed and felt that we need to focus on the positive, it's too easy to get bogged down with all the negative things that are around us each day. Please feel free to add to the list and pass on to others. I hope to get it back one day! Rgds, LN. I love the Burnside/Hillside area of Bulawayo where most of the houses have used natural stone to build the walls.... I love the "Blue skop" lizards we see scampering up the trees... I love the fact that you can have a Braai with friends any time you feel like it, even and especially in the pouring rain... I love the fact that we have such a network of friends and family that we can call on... I love the bird life in my garden, I wake up to no less than 20 different calls each morning...
