A Valentines Day Tryst

He Who Must Be Obeyed was rather perturbed on Valentine's Day to get an
invitation from his brazen wife to join her for a mysterious trip into
the countryside.  His eyes widened in horror as a few select items were
packed into the car boot !!

Two deck chairs, a picnic basket, A BLANKET !! Good heavens what indeed
was this little excursion all about !!

We headed off up the Old Esigodini Road, turned right at the How Mine
turn off and carried on down that road for quite a way. It was getting
towards six p.m. The countryside was sodden with the recent rains and
the sky was darkening prematurely with the heavy cloud cover.

He Who Must Be Obeyed was most relieved when we got to the How Mine
Gate where his little wife did not drag him  off into the soaking wet
grass for a Valentine's romp, but instead  directed him into the How
Mine compound.

Setting the deck chairs up in a romantic little spot between the mine
store and the mine butcher shop, accompanied by the sweet whispers of a
horde of little bedraggled children looking for sweets, He Who Must Be
Obeyed refused categorically to lie on the blanket but sat in his chair
and accepted gratefully an ice cold beer.

The scene had been set, not for anything more than a secret valentine
day visit to the grove of trees where the European Swallows were
massing in their millions for their impending migration to the northern
hemisphere. !!

It was an absolutely amazing experience something we will both never
forget.

One of Bulawayo's best kept secrets but something that should be shared
by all folk who respect nature and its incredible mysteries.

The European Swallow is a diminutive little bird measuring in length
about 18 cm. It's reddish throat bordered by a broad dark band
distinguishes this species from all other swallows. The European
Swallow breeds in Europe but it migrates south to India and Africa.

According to bird fundi Wally Lacey these  incredible little birds used
to mass in the Sauerstown Area, but since 1996 they have moved to a
tiny grove of gum trees near a dam in the How Mine Compound.

The locals know exactly where the gum tree grove is, they look askance
at the motley collection of strange bird enthusiasts who gather at dusk
to observe this amazing sight as millions upon millions of the swallows
gather at this time of the year to join forces for their annual
migration.

The first arrivals from Europe arrive in Southern Africa after their 12
and a half thousand km journey, in early September. During the period
October to March swallows are fairly common in Zimbabwe while winter
record are rare. Birds ringed in Southern Africa have been recovered
from as far afield as Ireland and Siberia.

The fastest recorded flight is a Johannesburg ringed bird recovered
after 34 days later 12000 kms away !! The longest recorded distance was
12480 km and the oldest age 70 months.

Now the blanket was going to be used for the innocent purpose of lying
on our backs while watching the swallows come in to roost, to save one
from getting a stiff neck ! It was an awesome sight, the sky was
literally considerably darkened with the layer upon layer of the
swallows. They seemed to come into roost in a most orderly fashion. I
am not lying when I say there were millions. The layers seemed to go up
into an incredibly high altitude where one had to squint to see as
swarm after warm, layer after layer, flew in with the speed of light,
to land in this little grove of trees.

As more and more birds arrived, the noise level increased considerably
as the birds squabbled and twittered their way into finding an
available empty space on each bird littered branch.

The noise was so loud that it could be likened to the noise made by the
Victoria Falls, as millions of tiny birds gather for safety in these
giant gums which must literally have been groaning under the weight of
the birds.

What was also amazing were the amount of raptors that has gathered to
feast amongst this the dense gathering of swooping, swarming swallows.
We saw no less that five peregrine falcons darting, swooping, stooping
and creating havoc amongst the masses. Wally tells of sightings of
Wahlbergs Eagles, Bataleurs, and the Western Red-Footed Kestrel all on
the hunt during this amazing black seething incredible mass of nature.

As the dusk gathered a raptor which we could not identify swooped into
the grove of trees, his chances of grabbing a tasty meal very high
indeed, and the little ginger cat that lives in the butchery roof was
having a wonderful time, hoisting itself up the trees and causing havoc
with the swallows.

According to the experts the birds usually leave on their incredible
journey to their northern summer feeding grounds sometime around the
middle of February, so you may not be lucky enough to see them this
year, but hopefully they will be be back next year and you too can
invite your Man for a valentines tryst with a difference !!

BOOK EXCHANGE TO AID PENSIONERS

If people bring their old Books and Magazines to the shop and say
they are being donated then the price we normally pay for the books is
put
aside and at the end of each month the money is then passed onto SOAP.
This seems to work well with people from South Africa who hand over all
their old Magazines which we collect and then pay out to SOAP.
Perhaps you can advise readers that this system is in place and another
means of raising money for charity.

Books and magazines can be taken to

Baby Tyler O'Reilly Fundraising Committee:

This Committee was formed to raise the funds required to get Baby Tyler
through a series of very expensive life-saving open-heart surgical
operations. He survived the first operation - which cost ZAR 419
000.00, but
sadly passed away on 12th December, 2004. The Committee wishes to extend
their very grateful and heartfelt thanks to each and every person who
responded to out requests. So many people made donations towards this
cause
in cash or kind, and so many more gave of themselves in prayer and moral
support. May God bless you all for your selfless generosity!

Now that Tyler is no longer with us, we note that there are some
residual
funds in our trust account, which we would like to channel towards an
equally worthy cause. It is the proposal of this Committee that the
remaining funds or donated items be handed over to the Children's Heart
Foundation of Zimbabwe, to assist other Zimbabwean children with
life-threatening heart conditions. Should there be any donor who has an
objection to this, we would ask that they contact the Committee with
their
objection/s (together with specific details of their donation and their
identity) - via e-mail at aops@mweb.co.zw , or by mail at P.O. Box 9042,
Hillside, Bulawayo - before 20th February 2004.

Failing that, the remaining funds/donations will be handed over as
proposed.

Regards

Baby Tyler O'Reilly Fundraising Committee

Two of my best friends ( My brother Brett  Sparrow from Bulawayo and
one of my half brothers Scott Wonenberg whose father was a dentist in
Bulawayo for many years have set out on a mission that I thought was
next to impossible and I am proud of what they have achieved thus far.
Their mission as a lot of you know by now, and for those that don't, is
to row 3000 km's across the Atlantic ocean from La Gomera Canary
Islands to Barbados in a tiny two man rowing boat.  It is part of a
race run every once in awhile mainly to raise money for different
charities.  However these two crazy chaps have decided to do it for the
good of us Zimbabweans and to let the world know that we are still out
there and not to forget about us and our magic little country.  They
have basically used what money the had to prepare the boat and buy
enough food to make it across but have not got enough to pay for the
entrance fees, or to get the boat shipped back to the UK from
Barbados.  However the race organisers have agreed to let them go in
the hopes that money will be arranged whilst they are en-route.  Should
they not come up with the race entrance fee by the end of it and happen
to win the race in record time, which is looking quite possible at this
stage, they will not be recognised as the race winners which will be a
disappointing fact all in all.  They started the race 2 days behind the
rest of the teams and have already caught up to the main group
of competitors however are not resting till they have caught the race
favourites and probably won't rest until they reach Barbados.  You can
follow their progress and read much more about them if you visit the
website www.oceanregatta.com their boat is boat no. 4 and it's name is
Against All Odds. ( Because the entrance fee has not been paid they
have been taken off the internet ocean-regatta but you can watch their
progress on www.oceanracing.com. )

Should any of you out there know of anyone who would be willing to
donate a few dollars to help these chaps pay for the transport costs to
return the boat  also airfares brom Barbados please let me know as soon
as possible even if it is $10 here and $20 there.  Any little bit helps
and will be greatly appreciated.  Those who donate will have their
names printed on the boat as a token of appreciation and thanks,
Companies wishing to advertise are more than welcome to do so too.
Any monies left over after paying all the bills will go to some worthy
charity in Zimbabwe.

The latest news we have as of the 10th February is that they are
leading the two man boats.   Only one other boat is ahead of them and
that is a 4 man boat.   So far they are breaking the record.

I can be reached on email at clintonsparrow@attglobal.net  or by cell
phone on +263 91 268867 in Zimbabwe and internationally on +44

I would like to comment upon your story regarding The Sticker Dilemma,
by
way of comparison.

I live in Vancouver, British Columbia ( left Rhodesia in 1977) and our
modern system seems to work without any fuss what-so-ever.

A simplified version is that insurance and licensing is done
simultaneously and is valid for up to one year. The vehicle's rear
license plate is required to show an insurance expiry decal which is
renewed annually. The sticky decals are colour coded so Jan. is blue,
Feb. is red etc. Monthly colours change annually to avoid fraudulent
use. A second sticker above the decal is the day of the month that the
insurance expires.

As the system is computerized a policeman - who is the only person
likely to be interested - can tell from the information on the plate and
decals, who the registered owner is, what his/her driving record is, as
well as the insurance details. Very handy info in motor vehicle
accidents.

If my insurance expires on Jan 5th then the policeman who pulls me over,
without even leaving his vehicle,  can immediately tell if everything is
in order.  As no vehicle may be licensed without first being insured and
vise versa, it is very simple method and easy to maintain.

If you are caught driving with an expired decal you are charged with
driving an unlicensed vehicle and with carrying no insurance. A
financially imprudent idea.

I remember the silly bits of paper stuck all over the windscreen of our
Morris 1000, thirty years ago. I'm sure the person driving our car today
cannot see a single thing looking past the steering wheel.

THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD

I left Bulawayo, 14 years ago, and when I
get information, about my beloved country, my heart cry's out.  How do
people survive?  The "majority", how are they surviving?  It is so sad,
it
was a country with a great future, and so many possibilities.

My thoughts are with you and yours, and everyone that try's to survive
in
the dictatorship of ZANUPF.

CONDOLENCES
t is with great sadness that I tell you that Allison, wife of Alban
Williams passed away on Saturday.
For a number of years now, she has fought a brave fight against a
number of non malignant tumors.

Recently she has been battling two, one in the head, the other in her
body.   She seemed better towards the end of last week, but on
Saturday, suffered a massive stroke, which took her life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Alban at this sad time.

The funeral will be held at Christ the King Church, Hillside, on
Thursday 19th February at 10 am.
