A SAD ADMISSION

Morning Mirror has been running for nearly twenty years.!!

It all started when Maurice Thompson suggested I start an internet programme equivalent to the Radio Show Morning Mirror which I had produced and presented twice weekly on ZBC for many, many years. (Thank you Maurice!!)

A few years ago I was literally run off my feet to produce a weekly Morning Mirror (or at least wearing my fingers to the bone) - trying to keep abreast of all the advertising on this, the one and only internet platform that was available for local and overseas Zimbabweans.

Now sadly Harare has formatted its own publication and various other free internet sites like Simply The Best Bulawayo Notice Board, have made mincemeat of the simple little Morning Mirror.

Who wants to pay hard currency in this day and age, when you can advertise for free

I have soldiered on for a couple of years now, trying to keep a few adverts afloat and trying to raise a couple of bob for the Edith Duly Nursing Home, which was my main ambition for many years, as well as making the Mirror a 'Little Bit Of Home' for our Diasporans.

My little publication has served well to bond a community that needed a few rays of weekly sunshine. Twenty years ago the Diaspora needed desperately to hold on to all things home,
but now -

'The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.'

I have a handful of loyal advertisers and a handful of loyal readers (Bless you all)

But has the Morning Mirror, like all good things, served its usefulness

I would value the readers comments

Watchdog !!

CHRISTMAS SHUTDOWN

Morning Mirror will take a break over the Christmas period.

The last Mirror for 2018 will run on Tuesday 11 December and we will commence again in the New Year on Tuesday 8 January.

Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo.

Many people have expressed concern that the Wall Of Remembrance at the Athlone Cemetery Bulawayo has collapsed, and the Municipality has secured all the plaques, ashes and urns in a haphazard, if safe, place.

The City of Bulawayo, under the guidance of that amazing man Rob Burrett, is hoping that the relatives concerned with the establishment of a replacement wall, will assist with fund raising.

If anyone is able to make a contribution to this worthy cause, please e mail me on magskriel@mac.com
or Rob Burrett on robburrett@icloud.com .

Thank you.

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
ALL PERFORMANCES IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL

Thursday 13 December at 7.00 p.m. The Pelican Brief
'The Pelican Brief', released 25 years ago on 17 December, is based on the novel of the same name by John Grisham and stars Julia Roberts as young law student Darby Shaw and Denzel Washington as Washington Herald reporter Gray Grantham. After two Supreme Court justices are killed, Darby writes a brief detailing her theory on why they were killed which she gives to her law professor, Thomas Callahan but he is killed by a car bomb; Darby manages to avoid the same fate and is subsequently attacked by an unknown assailant. She goes into hiding and enlists the help of an investigative reporter (Washington) as the two become fugitives.
A taut, intelligent thriller that succeeds on almost every level. [Variety]
A very well-executed and suspenseful political thriller. [MovieGuys]
Gripping, intelligent, acting is superb, the story is well constructed and builds in this beautiful crescendo. [IMDb]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members

Friday 14 December at 7.00 p.m. Il Trittico
'Il Trittico' [The Triptych] consists of three one-act operas, and death is central to all three! In 'Il Tabarro' ['The Cloak'] there is a murder, in 'Suor Angelica' a dead child and in 'Gianni Schicchi' death is the springboard for deception and humour. In contrast to the seriousness of the first two operas, Puccini raises the curtain on Florentine sunshine in the last and ends this thoroughly satisfying threesome with his only comedy.
Puccini's trilogy touches on genuine greatness in these performances. [Guardian]
A triumph...three wonderfully directed and expertly acted productions. [BBC Music Magazine]
Lavishly staged and with exemplary picture quality, the Royal Opera's Il Trittico is a must-have. [MusicWeb International]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

Thursday 20 December at 7.00 p.m. Paddington
From the much loved novels by Michael Bond, 'Paddington' tells the story of the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realise that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck that says 'Please look after this bear. Thank you', and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist...
'Paddington' is absolutely, positively delightful. [New York Magazine]

Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] [Paddington 2 will be shown on Thursday 3 January]

Friday 21 December at 7.00 p.m. Handel: Messiah
This performance of Handel's 'Messiah' was recorded live in King's College Chapel in 2009 when it commemorated both the 250th anniversary of the death of Handel and the 800th anniversary of the University of Cambridge. The work was a huge hit at its premiere in April 1742 and remains among the most popular works in music although in the year that he wrote it, 1741, Handel found himself on the verge of bankruptcy and was deeply depressed. In London it was even being said that his career as a composer was over.
I would happily sit in King's College Chapel listening to this choir sing for the rest of my days. [Richard Morrison, The Times]
Stephen Cleobury's interpretation ticked all the boxes, with choir and orchestra impeccably balanced and soloists glowing. [The Independent]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Christmas Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. but must be ordered in advance.

Monday 31 December at 7.30 p.m. Berlin Philharmonic / Morecambe & Wise
Last year's traditional Berlin Philharmonic New Year' Eve concert, conducted by Simon Rattle, began with Dvorak's 'Carnival' Overture' and featured Joyce DiDonato in four of Richard Strauss's lavishly beautiful orchestral songs. The programme also included works by Leonard Bernstein for his centenary year and Shostakovich in unbuttoned mood, creating the perfect atmosphere for New Year's Eve celebrations.
Time seems suspended [in the Strauss songs] and not a murmur can be heard from a seemingly transfixed audience. [Amazon]
After dinner to take us to the New Year, there's Morecambe & Wise 'still bringing us sunshine' with some of their funniest sketches including the Grieg Piano Concerto ( with Andre Previn), 'Backing Piano' (with Elton John) and 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' (with Shirley Bassey).
Just humour at its best with all the stars of yesteryear wanting to go on the ride of laughter with these two. [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval but must be ordered in advance.

5) Roses And Raspberries
Bulawayo Fire Brigade were called to a thatched house fire a couple of weeks ago on a hot and very windy Tuesday morning. Aside of unbelievable neighbourly support for the home-owner, along with a big team from Whitestone School - the effort by the fire-fighters was outstanding. The fire, a direct cause of cable thieves across the Hillside Conservancy vlei area, took a long while to get under control, and water pressure from the nearby municipal hydrant was poor. I suggested that we use their dewatering pump to use our pool water to augment the engines, and water tender. A workable pump, which fired first pull, was deployed, and we managed an additional two hours of water at a crucial time in the fight. One empty pool later, and a tender overnight to check on the smoldering thatch, imagine my total astonishment that when I popped home for lunch on Wednesday morning to find my pool had been refilled at no cost, by our amazing Fire Brigade. I am still astounded at this action - so thoughtful and so well-received. Roses in abundance to our amazing Fire Brigade who fight endless blazes, attend numerous vehicle accidents and who don't get the accolades they so richly deserve! Our neighbour managed to save most of his possessions as a result of tireless efforts of neighbours, in itself a sterling and selfless action.
