Coming Home

Coming Home to a really chilly Bulawayo is always fun, nothing has changed, its like living in a time warp.

My girls always hated any changes, I was never allowed to move any furniture around as it would upset them, and they insist that we hold onto the dear old Family Home, even if we spend so much time away, and they are unlikely to come back and take over the empire that HeeHoo has so amazingly built during the special years of our lives.

The only trouble with a 66 year old house is that it requires constant attention, and my trip home has been to get as much maintenance done as I can. Majestic roof repairs, pool repairs, leaking taps, leaking roofs, leaking tanks, etc etc, but to add insult to injury the sixty foot long, six foot high, beautiful brick wall between us and our neighbour, decided to gasp its last breath the day before I arrived home and collapsed all over my beautiful garden beds with a giant sigh!! The wall had been there for over fifty years so why it decided to give up the ghost now is a mystery!!

Bulawayo city is an enigma, there is not a single policeman anywhere to be seen, not a single road block, no-one at the school crossings, no-one in uniform even cycling or walking around, where are they all is the question that everyone is asking

There must be literally thousands and thousands of policemen lurking somewhere, as six months ago there were thousands and thousands of them manning roadblocks throughout the country

Are they all in training for the forthcoming elections Are they on R and R Have they been dismissed for corruption at the roadblocks Are they lazing around the police posts I do wish someone could tell me

Sadly the absence of a police presence has resulted in a serious downturn in the driving and in general law and order in the country. The Bridge Girls gave me all the gossip at bridge last night and no doubt the Mosaics girls will fill me in with some more delicious gossip tomorrow!!

Our little Black Cat is ecstatic to have me home and spends all night trying to find a warm place on my chest. We worked out that she is 116 years old!! Joyce looks after her like a mother and takes over the elaborate feeding duties and she also sleeps with Joyce at night when we are not here!!

I was pleased to see an amazing amount of residential buildings rising in some of the new suburbs. And on the subject of the city going forward - the hundreds of vendors who sell from the street corners are looking pretty upmarket!! They have graduated from selling their wares from a plastic bag laid out elegantly on the pavement, then they rose to a cardboard box with wares neatly and fastidiously displayed, and now I notice that most of them have climbed to greater heights!! A lot of the vendors can now even boast a makeshift table upon which their wares are exhibited!!

The on-going cash situation is still pretty serious and I was allowed to draw a princely 100 bond notes today, thats my weekly allowance of cash. The shops are charging one price in Bond Notes, giving 15 percent off if you use a 'Swipe' card and giving fifty percent off if you pay in genuine USA dollars!!

My heart goes out to the poor and the elderly who have to live this life of 'Quiet Desperation'.

Watchdog !!

Its rose pruning time and I can prune your roses in a most capable manner resulting in a magnificent showing in a few months time.

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
DAMBARI WILDLIFE TRUST WORLD RHINO DAY GOLF COMPETITON
It is that time of the year again when we begin preparations for our Annual Golf Competition that will be held at Bulawayo Golf Club on WORLD RHINO DAY, Saturday 22 September 2018.
You, your friends and / or your company are invited to play, sponsor a hole or donate a prize and help us raise awareness of the perilous conservation status of the remaining two rhino species in Africa and three rhino species in Asia. The magnificent Leadwood carving of a black rhino is the Dambari Wildlife Trust Floating Trophy awarded each year to the Best Four Ball Better Ball in the competition; why not make 2018 the year you win it Proceeds from the Golf competition will be used to support our ongoing conservation and research under Dambari's, Conservation Across Boundaries programmes in the Matobo Hills World Heritage Site.
Thanks to donor support, Dambari Wildlife Trust's projects go from strength to strength each year. Below is a brief update on achievements in the last 12 months:
The Schools' Biodiversity Monitoring Project (MBMP) conservation clubs have enjoyed participation of 1400 school children since 2012. This project's newsletter for the 1st term 2018 compiled by project officer Bright Sagonda is available on the Dambari Facebook page. We also took 80 of the most dedicated club members into the National Park for the day every year, usually their first ever experience of a National Park.
Two of Dambari's young proteges Cedric Maforimbo and Tafadzwa Tichagwa are committed to protecting the Zimbabwean environment and are currently studying for Masters degrees at Oxford and NUST respectively. Three more attachment students from local universities were hosted by Dambari and gained valuable work experience and completed their project data collection.
Dambari is part of a technical committee working towards recognition of Matopos wetlands as a RAMSAR site to ensure national and international protection and is involved in the protection of the Matopos High Altitude catchment.
Our rhino conservation efforts are ongoing with birth rates for both black and white rhino in Matopos National Parks exceeding the required national growth rate. Dambari will be conducting dehorning and ear notching work again in 2018 to ensure every rhino is identifiable and to minimise the incentive and reward for poachers. We also facilitated the removal of snares from 2 white rhino and the treatment of a black rhino bull that had been injured in a territorial dispute with another bull. Tafadzwa's Masters

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
ALL EVENTS IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL

FRIDAY 15 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. GOUNOD: FAUST
Charles Gounod was born two hundred years ago on 17 June 1818 and Faust is his most celebrated work. One of the most popular operas ever written, by the time of Gounod's death in 1893 it had been performed over a thousand times in Paris alone and includes tunes that everyone knows - the Waltz, the Soldiers' Chorus and many more, not to mention the ballet music which also has a life of its own outside of the opera.
This is opera at its grandest and best. [The Wall Street Journal]
Alagna gives the performance of a lifetime, physically daring and vocally and dramatically responsive to every shift. Funny, erotic and disturbing by turns, 'Faust' makes for a compelling evening. [The Guardian]
Admission: $3.00. Free to Red Carpet members. Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

SATURDAY 16 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. THE HELLENIC SCHOOL CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA
Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. Carriages: c. 8.15 p.m.
The Hellenics need no introduction as their two previous visits have been very successful! The programme will include 'The Great Locomotive Chase' by Robert R Smith and 'A Pirate's Legend' by Soon Hee Newbold for full orchestra, music from 'La La Land' for string orchestra and 'Workforce' by Chris M Bernotas for wind band among other items. There will also be numbers for vocal ensemble.
Tickets: $5.00. Booking at the Academy but no reserved seating. Free to Red Carpet members.

THURSDAY 21 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. SARITA URANOVSKY (VIOLIN), JEANETTE MICKLEM (PIANO)
A native of Cape Town, Sarita Uranovsky has enjoyed an exceptionally active and diverse career as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, orchestral musician and teacher across the globe. With Jeanette Micklem, who needs no introduction, she brings a generous and exceptionally attractive programme:
Dvo ak: Romance in F Minor, Op.11
Beethoven: Sonata No.5 in F major, Op.24 - 'Spring'
Sarasate: Romanza Andaluza, Op.22, No.1
Brahms: Sonata No 1 in G Major, Op.78
Smetana: From My Homeland (1880)
Tickets: $10.00/$5.00. Booking at the Academy - reserved seating. Free to Red Carpet members. Dinner available after the concert ($10.00).

FRIDAY 22 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. SHOSTAKOVICH: THE GOLDEN AGE
'The Golden Age' exists only on the Bolshoi stage - no other ballet company performs it. Composed by Shostakovich when he was 24, it did not win the hearts of ballet fans at first, mainly perhaps because its plot followed a Soviet football team in a Western city where they came into contact with many politically incorrect bad characters! New life was breathed into Shostakovich's score in 2006 when Yuri Grigorovich suggested a completely fresh libretto mainly revolving around the love story between Rita, a cabaret dancer, and Boris, a young idealist. The conflict in the original production was also recast as a clash between fishermen - the morally superior workers - and society's criminal elements.
Excellence prevails everywhere. The Bolshoi principals and company, their orchestra and music director, and the production, sets, costumes and lighting are all beyond reproach. [MusicWeb International]
This is the Bolshoi, so the dancing and acting skills are superb and the two pas de deux between Nina Kaptsova and Mikhail Lobukhin are out of this world. [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

SATURDAY 23 JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. OZMA MOVIE-CONCERT: 'THE LOST WORLD'
Something very different! Discover a thrilling film odyssey enhanced by Ozma's creative jazz.
Professor Challenger, at the head of a brave expedition, sets off to explore the Amazon jungle in search of the lost world. Mixing compositions and improvisations, Ozma accompanies our adventurers to a fantastic and unknown land populated by dinosaurs. This cine concert offers a new playful and colourful soundtrack to this masterpiece of the silent cinema!
Admission: FREE!

8) Bulawayo News

Take a few minutes to read this fantastic poem by Gail Amyot, joint winner, with Mandipa Mashangaidze, of our Africa Day competition where we asked you to tell us what you love most about our beautiful continent. Gail came by on Friday to collect her prize of a personalised cake, and brought her gorgeous daughter and granddaughters along with her. Thanks, Gail, and all our special customers for making Brooks Express a real family affair!

For The Love Of Africa
Awaking to birdsong and a softly-coloured sky
Sunshine to warm you, clouds that roll by
Flaming trees, Bouganvilleas blazing and Jacaranda blue.
Msasas in September, sudden storms of November.
Rivers raging, roads asunder, crops emerging
Roadside vendors, money lenders, demon drivers.
Queues, patient people, resigned to waiting.
Smiling through, hoping, praying for that day they can be the people they know they are.
The ones inside, waiting to be free
Gold, platinum, chrome and coal,
diamonds blinking.
Bright sad stones, selfish with stained history.
Wildlife, diverse and bountiful, our pride
shared with the world.
Africa, ancient, unforgiving
My love for her is my inner being.
