ITS MONDAY SO IT MUST BE DIET DAY!!

Our bookshelves are filled with diet and health books.
The Complete Doctor Scarsdale's medical Diet, Dr Tarnower's Lifetime keep Slim Programme, , Dr Atkin's Diet Revolution, The Drinking Man's Diet, Fit for Life, Living Health, The Beverley Hills Diet, Adelle Davis lets eat Right to Keep Fit, the Mayo Clinic Diet, The Air Hostesses Diet, just lately the Keto Diet and on and on ad nauseum........

And what has this collection of muscle bound tomes done to us I ask with tears in my eyes Absolutely zilch !!!
Here we are, the two of us, years and years past the Seven Year Itch, well past our Mid Life Crisis, bordering on Senility and we still have these excess kilos that we had since thirty somethings !!!
It just proves that dieting is a total waste of time. I mean every Monday we remind ourselves that "today is the first day of the rest of our lives".
Every Monday we stand on the scale, carefully adjust the balance to exactly ZERO, then we sally forth, diet sheet in hand, glass of skimmed milk and peeled banana (Fit for Life) or Austrian Souffle with Breakfast sausage (Dr Atkin's ) or half a grapefruit and 1 slice protein bread toasted (Dr Scarsdale) or 6 oz pineapple (Beverley Hills) or 1 slice toast and 1 poached egg (Heart Foundation ).

Today is the the first day of our diet and we are feeling GREAT !!!

By lunch time we are frantically reading recipe books, but we struggle through a half a can of tuna on dry toast with black coffee, by suppertime we are grumpy, irritable, scratchy and horrible.
By ten p.m. we have snuck into the kitchen in search of hidden chocolate and by Tuesday morning we are planning dinner at Massimos on Wednesday when Charlie has his afternoon off !!

But HOORAY - by Thursday we have a new diet to look forward to, (which of course will will only start on Monday ) the Worlds Number One Best Seller - "The Carbohydrates Addict Diet" which forbids the combining of protein and carbohydrates !!
Eureka!!! This is the one, of course, it is all so simple. It's academic my dear friend.

"Never" says the Carbo Addict Diet books says "eat meat with potatoes" Or cheese with bread". It categorically states, that for 99% of man's history, we have been eating protein separately from carbohydrates. !!
I can accept this. After all when a Stone Age Man dragged home a carcass you can be sure Mummy did not rush off and whip up some Yorkshire Pud or cauliflower au gratin !

No siree, when Glug dumped that carcass on the cave floor the family would have fallen upon it, shoving raw meat down their throats. They probably shouted at each other, burped a lot and wiped their mouths with the back of their hands !!
But never would they have mixed meat and veg.
On the other hand, for those long weeks when Glug found no meat for his family, they would probably have lived happily on berries , leaves and roots.
So, one would deduce, it has only been in the past few generations that humans have mixed the two and pigged out in Italian Restaurants !!
And while our stomaches are coping with it, rather well in fact, too well for sure, it does not mean it's good for us. !!
BUT - you try eating spag without the bol, the snorkers without the mash, the curry without the rice - IT"S WELL NIGH IMPOSSIBLE !!

Mondays are stern days in our house, but after all -
We are the masters of our own fate !!
We are the Captains of our Stomaches !!
The enzymes are screaming !!
The salivary glands are marching !!
For Pete's sake, what exactly is wrong with a toasted ham sandwich or a hamburger and chips
What could be better than garlic snails eaten with brown bread fingers

Sigh ! Its Monday, so it's spinach with poached egg again !! But I know that I am going to lose weight THIS TIME !!

Watchdog !!

Death Notice

We are once again very saddened by the news of the passing of yet another of the great men of Zimbabwean agriculture, Guy Montague Hilton-Barber formerly of Barberton Ranch in the Bubiana Conservancy.

Guy was a very well-known and much liked personality in our agricultural industry who was extremely generous with his time spending many years serving on numerous committees in a number of positions. It is people like him that played such a huge and important part in developing our growing industry at the time and his incredible work has left a huge legacy, which we still feel the benefit of today in a large number of fields. He was also a very solid supporter of the CFU.

Tragically the conservancy he helped develop over a number of years, restocking it with an incredible number of wildlife species, including many of the endangered species, fell victim to the brutal slaughter, which preceded the violent occupation of the properties within the beautiful conservancy. As much as he and others lobbied hard and appealed far and wide, doing everything they could, the slaughter and deforestation of their sensitive habitat was unstoppable. After this emotional loss he and Moira moved to Port Alfred.

Guy will be missed by so many people but most certainly never forgotten. So much can be said about this wonderful man, but without wanting to repeat some of the lovely words said by Moira below in her condolence for the man she was married to for 58 wonderful years, we have let her say the rest.

Our most sincere condolences to Moira and their family on the tragic loss.

May his dear soul now rest in peace.

Peter Steyl
President
Commercial Farmers' Union

Condolence

Guy Montague Hilton-Barber 1932 -2018.

Guy was born in Grahamstown in 1932. His family were 1820 Settlers. His father moved to Rhodesia in 1938 where he was educated at R.E.P.S. and Plumtree Schools.

He was an avid sportsman playing cricket and hockey for Matabeleland Schools. He then played cricket for Nuffield Schools and later for Rhodesia, and for the South African Country Districts side. He also captained Rhodesian Country Districts.

On leaving school he went to Gwebi Agricultural College and then worked on the Matopos Research Station, where he met Moira in 1956. He and Neil Purdon received Nuffield farming scholarships in 1956, and went overseas.

Guy married Moira in 1960 and he started farming in the Filabusi farming area with his father. He received a Crown Land farm in West Nicholson in 1961, where he and Moira began building their life on 'Atherstone', (living in a 1920 motorised Dodge caravan, while they built their home, it was so hot it was thatched! )

He gave major contributions of help and encouragement to the district during the bush wars. He was chairman of the Cattle Producers Association also Vice chairman of the CFU, declining chairmanship.
He was Matabeleland cattle representative for the CFU.

During his children's' schooling he was Chairman and Board member of REPS, Plumtree and Girl's College.

He introduced Charolaise cattle to Rhodesia, bred Tuli, Charolaise, and Charbray registered herds. Showed cattle at Agricultural Shows in Bulawayo, Gwanda and Gwelo, receiving many trophies.

He was a pilot for 40 years, a Matabele linguist, a great humourist and loved by workers and colleagues alike.

He and Moira left Zimbabwe in 2004, driven out by ill health and invaders. He came back to his roots in the Eastern Cape to Settlers Park, Port Alfred. He again contributed in every way he could, serving on the Residents Committee, then as chairman of the Settlers Board.

His three sons Myles, Craig, and Grant, his daughter Vanessa, his seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren and Moira say farewell to a greatly loved patriarch and husband.

From Earnest Hemmingway's ' The Green Hills Of Africa' - A man should be:

' brave, gentle, never losing his temper, never bragging, never complaining, except in a joke, tolerant, understanding, intelligent....'

He was all these things.

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
ALL EVENTS IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL

THURSDAY 3 MAY AT 7.00 P.M. THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH [BOND 19!]
James Bond is sent once more into the breach in the name of Queen, Country, and a dry martini. In the 19th Bond adventure, 007 (Pierce Brosnan) must resolve a potentially deadly power struggle between two unstable nations, with control of the world's oil supply as the ultimate prize. Bond is assigned as bodyguard to Elektra King (Sophie Marceau), the daughter of a petroleum magnate who was brutally murdered, and is trying to foil the fiendish plot of Renard (Robert Carlyle), a villain who was shot in the head with an unusual result: he cannot feel physical pain, an apparent failing that proves to be a considerable asset. Denise Richards appears as Dr. Christmas Jones, an expert on nuclear weapons, alongside Desmond Llewelyn as Q, Judi Dench as M, Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny and John Cleese as R.
'A fantastic addition to the James Bond series - easily one of the best ones every made. It's quick, clever, graceful, and ingenious.' [Metacritic]
'"The World Is Not Enough" is a splendid comic thriller, exciting and graceful, endlessly inventive.' [Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times]
A spectacular display of stunts and adrenaline'. [New York Daily News]

Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 4 MAY AT 7.00 P.M. MOZART: THE MAGIC FLUTE
From the Queen of the Night's vocal pyrotechnics to Papageno's chirpy birdsongs, 'The Magic Flute' is one of Mozart's most charming and engaging operas. However, its fairy-tale surface conceals the mysteries of an initiation ritual and a multi-layered plot, packed with allegories to fire the imagination. Sir Colin Davis conducts the chorus and orchestra of the Royal Opera House and a glittering cast in David McVicar's 2003 production recorded live at Covent Garden.
'It is easy to underestimate the success of the ROH "Magic Flute", so readily did the comedy flow in David McVicar s sensitive production under Colin Davis's benign direction...an evening no Mozart lover should miss. [The Mail on Sunday]
'Beautiful throughout. Could not better the cast or production.' [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]. Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

THURSDAYS 10, 17, 24, 31 MAY AND 7 JUNE AT 7.00 P.M. THE CROWN
'The Crown' tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world - Buckingham Palace and No.10 Downing Street - and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Two houses, two courts, one Crown. This first season covers the period from Princess Elizabeth's marriage to Prince Philip in 1947 to the end of her sister Princess Margaret's romance with Peter Townsend in 1955.
'Powerful performances and lavish cinematography make "The Crown" a top-notch production worthy of its grand subject.' [Rotten Tomatoes]
'" The Crown" is not the new "Downton Abbey". (Dowager Countess, pull the brim of that toque hat over your ears.) "The Crown" is far and away better.' [Vanity Fair]
'Utterly captivating, moving, mesmerising, beautiful. Claire Foy is astoundingly good, a masterpiece of dignity. Possibly one of the finest dramas of its era.' [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 11 MAY AT 7.00 P.M. BERNSTEIN CONDUCTS BEETHOVEN Carriages: 9.30 p.m.
Symphony No.7 in A major, Op.93
Missa Solemnis, Op.123
Beethoven began composing the Missa Solemnis in 1819, when he learned that his patron (and pupil) Archduke Rudolph was going to be appointed Cardinal Archbishop of Olmutz, but it wasn't finished until almost three years later. As might be expected, it was unparalleled in every respect. Although initially envisaged for use during a church service, it far exceeded the bounds of the genre, and Beethoven himself was quite aware of both its dimensions and its importance: in a letter he described it quite simply as 'my greatest work'.
'The Bernstein Seventh never lets us forget the bacchanalian symbolism of a work its creator claimed would make mankind spiritually drunk. Bernstein makes it so.' [Classics Today]
'Bernstein's compulsive Missa Solemnis is a major achievement that consistently puts the listener in awe of the magnitude of Beethoven's magnificent creation.' [MusicWeb International]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)
