Restful Respite

I wish I was settling down for an afternoon snooze
In the coolness of a big room with red veranda floors
And large windows thrown open wide,
So wide that I could hear the cicadas
Lulling me off to sleep
With the sun on the candle wick bedspread
Warming my toes
Solid wooden rafters
Lovingly holding up a thatched rooftop
Sturdy dark teak wood furniture
Cream crocheted cloths
Homemade patch-work cushions
Gran's verdant fern spilling out over the top of a copper pot,
The smell of wood fires from the nearby village wafting in mixed with Jasmine perfume and orange blossom
And pungent khaki Bush
The burst of colour from the bougainvillea in the near distance
The chatter of women's voices as they pass on the dusty path
And the silence when they've gone
No man's land
The space between consciousness and dreaming
As I give myself over to complete relaxation
And allow my body to heal
My spirit to rest
In a haven of respite
And as I return to this cocoon of safety
Womb-like and familiar
Where the passing from day to night
Is just a trick of the light
With the breathing in of the fresh, resplendent air
I am reborn
Revitalised
At one with it,
The hustle and bustle is finished now
No more will I strive to do more
No more will push myself to brink of exhaustion
The debt is paid
The deed is done
As I surrender into the arms of oblivion.

Thank you to Cyndi Barker @

Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage will be celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. Founded in 1973 by Dr. Viv Wilson and Mrs. Paddy Wilson, the orphanage was setup to give a home to injured and orphaned wild animals. FRIDAY 9 MARCH AT 7.00 P.M. BOITO: MEFISTOFELE
Boito's 'Mefistofele' was first performed a hundred and fifty years ago on 5 March 1868 at La Scala, Milan. It is a resplendent retelling of the Faust legend, and this San Francisco Opera House production was described as one of the most impressive ever seen there with spectacular sets and, as well as six principals and a vast orchestra, a chorus of 90, a children's chorus of 30, 12 ballet dancers and 45 supers, leading one reviewer to remark that the director 'forged crowd scenes so vast and various that a viewer might well have suspected digital enhancement.'
'This spectacular staging restores the 'grand' to grand opera in a timely and captivating way. With this mighty opera, the company reawakens audiences to the scope, ambition, risks and rewards of this art form when nothing is held back. By the time the curtain came down, this exhilarating "Mefistofele" had taken the audience to heaven and hell and back again to the heights. [The Classical Review]
'The Prologue is one of Opera's great "sonic spectaculars" and here the sound is staggering, with chorus and orchestra in awesome form. Absolutely stupendous and worth the price on its own!' [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

THURSDAY 15 MARCH AT 7.00 P.M. MEL BROOKS DOUBLE BILL
A double bill of films by Mel Brooks to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 'The Producers'! Failed Broadway producer Max (Zero Mostel) and timid accountant Leo (Gene Wilder) come up with a foolproof plan to make a fortune, by staging a musical which is guaranteed to flop and close after one night. A mad Nazi seems to have the perfect raw material - a tribute to the Fuhrer entitled 'Springtime for Hitler'...
'This is one of the funniest movies ever made. To see it now is to understand that. In 1968 the movie was like a bomb going off inside the audience's sense of propriety.' [Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times]
In 'Silent Movie', a has-been comedy director struggles to recruit a group of big Hollywood stars to take part in his comeback project, a modern-day silent movie. Mel Brooks' cameo-filled comedy pays loving tribute to the early days of screen comedy through a succession of (almost) entirely silent slapstick sequences.
'Mel Brooks' movies are a riot of visual and witty gags and in this one the guest cast is incredible as well. Anne Bancroft, Bernadette Peters, Paul Newman, James Caan, Burt Reynolds, Sid Caesar, and the rest appear to be having the time of their lives as Mel Brooks pull the strings so we can have a great time.' [IMDb]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 16 MARCH AT 7.00 P.M. KEN RUSSELL'S 'THE DEBUSSY FILM' / BERNSTEIN CONDUCTS DEBUSSY
this double bill celebrates two anniversaries as Claude Debussy died a hundred years ago on 25 March 1918 and Leonard Bernstein was born on 25 August 1918. It begins with Ken Russell's The Debussy Film: Impressions of the French Composer which takes the form of a film within a film as the director instructs the actor on the role of the composer. The two plots develop side by side as Oliver Reed, playing the actor playing Debussy, finds himself identifying with his subject ever more closely.
'Delightfully layered. A film about the making of a film about Debussy. What an excellent way to shove in both factual points, interpretations, introspections and parallels all at the same time - the way only Ken Russell could in 1965!' [Ferdy on Films].
After the interval Leonard Bernstein conducts the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome in 1989, the year before his death. The concert featured three of the French composerŽs best-known masterpieces, 'Images', 'Prelude a lŽapres-midi dŽun faune' and 'La Mer', in a feast of Mediterranean sensuality.
'In response to Bernstein's inspired direction, the orchestra play with great virtuosity and all the subtlety of detail Bernstein can command, to say nothing of the electrifying intensity.' [Penguin Guide]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

19) Seeking Friends

I was living in Bulawayo in the 1960s (I had a flat in MacDonald's Club), and while I was there I bought a small book of 48 poems by Elizabeth Stuart James called 'A Rose An Apple Tree'. I thoroughly enjoy all 48 poems in the book and read them regularly to classes, and I would dearly like to know more about the author. The book was published by Kingstons Limited in 1958.

I can't find any reference to her or her poems on Google and I don't suppose the book is still in print, but I would like to know if she wrote anything else and if anything by her is still available.

Please can you help me I would be grateful if you can.

Tony Baker
(now living in York, North Yorkshire, England).
