FIREWORKS CIRCA 1960!!

We were lucky enough to be treated to a Fourth of July fireworks display this year. Safely on board a cruise liner with the family, we watched in awe as the forty five minute display exploded overhead from the Santa Catalina Island.

It was glorious, but I always feel a tinge wasteful whenever I see a fireworks display.

We began reminiscing about days gone by after the display, when living dangerously was allowed and fireworks were a real blast!!

Back when there weren't so many laws against doing stuff, back when you were a kid, Preadolescent children, cigarette lighters in one hand, explosives in the other. You'd wait all year.
"Hey, man, light this one . . . "

It comes back, this small memory of bottle rockets and firecrackers and other illicit flammables. An indelible moment of a childhood in another time, back when backyard fireworks did not have a bad reputation.
There was the sound of the match, smell of the gunpowder, the ppffftt , the feel of the bottle rocket taking off (or leaving your fingers, if you were dumb or daring), the dusk and the twilight.

Time for one more. You didn't watch someone else do it, and you didn't play it on a video game. Bang! The real thing.
Of course, we do not advocate the use of rocket-propelled explosives, even in modest amounts. Yes, Mom, we know, about 10,000 people are injured each year in fireworks-related incidents.
But is it wrong to miss the explosives of lost youth Back when things weren't so quality-controlled, at the beginning of summer when everything was possible and we'd all live forever.

Today, consumer fireworks sales are booming, up fivefold since 2000, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association, but it's not the same, it's just not. What are these pyros spending all this money on

Do you remember the cherry bombs, the salutes, the Roman candles, bottle rockets, parachutes, buzz bombs, pinwheels, Catherine wheels, helicopters, jumping jacks, squibs and sparklers We would nail the Catherine Wheels to a tree and rush up in a fool hardy fashion to spin them if they stopped. Squibs were as about exciting as we ever knew, throwing a squib under Old Uncle Tom's chair was the top prize!!

Where are the soaring skyrockets of yesteryear, the whoosh that rattled the kitchen window, exploding in a star-burst above the trees
In the 'good old days' we would gather at someones home, or on the Milton Junior School playground, where a bonfire would be burned and a giant Guy Fawkes would be roasted alive!!
Do you remember bottle rocket fights, Roman candle wars

But how pervasive and fond the memory, the playing outside in the late dusk, the fireflies and bottle rockets and the blue-black of the sky descending, the flash of fireworks overhead, in your own yard. Perhaps it was no more a glorious summer than right now. Still, in the half-light of memory, the danger of it all seemed so safe.

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

THURSDAYS 13, 20 & 27 JULY PRIDE AND PREJUDICE 1
Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Jane Austen died two hundred years ago on 18 July 1817 and, to commemorate the event, the famous BBC production of her best-known novel, 'Pride and Prejudice', will be shown over three weeks. Adapted by Andrew Davies, Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth starred as Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy in a critically acclaimed production that was also a huge popular success. Jennifer Ehle won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress whilst the role of Darcy elevated Colin Firth to stardom - and the scene showing him emerging from a lake in a wet shirt was voted 'one of the most unforgettable moments in British TV history'! The series apparently inspired Helen Fielding to write the popular Bridget Jones novels and their screen adaptations featured Firth as Bridget's love interest, Mark Darcy.
'This television adaptation is probably as good as it can get for a literary classic.' [The Independent]
'Probably the best BBC series, it is really incredible. Set design and costumes are very believable and the acting is practically perfect for most of the characters.' [IMDb]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m.

FRIDAY 14 JULY THE FLAMES OF PARIS
Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. Carriages: 9.20 p.m.
'The Flames of Paris is a so-called 'revolutionary' ballet dating from the 1930s, a drama of intrigue, love and tragedy which unfolds against the background of the tumultuous events of the French Revolution and includes in its scenario the victorious march on Paris by the Marseillais and their storming of the Tuileries Palace. Political change seemingly doomed it to oblivion but Alexei Ratmansky's 2008 reworking with two of the Bolshoi's most charismatic stars, Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev, found fantastic success with audiences around the world. Set to Boris Asafiev's powerfully evocative music, which includes songs of the French Revolution, the ballet contains one of the most stunning pas de deux in the repertory.
'When Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev dance, stunned gasps rise up from the theatre: a collective 'oh' of wonder and delight.' [The Independent]
'The Act II dances are stunning, mixing breathtaking athleticism with sparkling joie de vivre captured in remarkable pictures and sound.' [BBC Music Magazine]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

I first met Dave when I started at RTV in August, 1969. I was somewhat in awe of him because although we went to Plumtree together, he was senior to me and I remembered him as a star middle-distance runner. As an 18-year-old I was in thrall to the likes of Sonia Hattin, James Thrush, Peter Rollason, Dave et al.
Dave very quickly put me at my ease and supported me throughout my training in the newsroom and then through the ranks of the crew to eventually, producer/director. My fondest memories are of producing and directing World of Sport, for example. He was always a leg-puller but the moment the red light came on the camera he switched into professional mode.
Viewers loved him because he radiated an aura of personal relationship with them. This was because he was always aware of the fact that he wasn't only in a TV studio, but in thousands of strangers' homes as a guest.
As for the 'naughty boy' aspect of his personality ...
When we were working up to closedown we used to phone the Churchill Arms to send a couple of crates of beers into the lounge for the three or four of us who would be descending on to their unsuspecting hospitality. We often sat in front of a big log fire in winter and talked the night through till first light.
The incident that I recall most clearly A fireplace was a massive portrait of, naturally enough, Winston Churchill. Now at about 2a.m. one of us, probably me dared Dave to take it down and out to his car without being caught. Dave was not one to refuse a dare!
He stood, unhooked the picture which was more than half his size, walked to the front door, said 'good morning' to the security guard and walked to his car, calmly placing it in the back seat.
He then rejoined us with nothing said.
Half an hour later he went and retrieved the portrait and with another 'good morning' to the guard and with his cheeky grin, walked back in a re-hung the picture.
Churchill Arms never said a word of course. I doubt the guard even mentioned the shenanigans in his report. Mind you, he did know us pretty well!
That was the Dave that most viewers never saw.
May he rest in peace.

19) Seeking Friends

I am writing this as an appeal for information about relatives of mine who lived in Bulawayo up until about 1983, before all or some emigrated to Australia. The senior Roberts, namely Donovan Stephenson Roberts (born 1931) is now deceased (Having died in Australia in about 1983), but was survived by his wife (June), son Neil and daughter Helen.
Would it be possible, please, to put an appeal out for the family's present whereabouts

My connection is that Donovan was my first cousin and with the passing of time (I am now 77 years old) I'd dearly like to re-establish contact. FYI, I live in Chorley, U.K.
