The Bathing Suit (author unknown)

When I was a child in the 1950s, the bathing suit for the mature figure was-boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift, and they did a good job.

Today s stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure carved from a potato chip.

The mature woman has a choice, she can either go up front to the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus that escaped from Disney s Fantasia, or she can wander around every run-of-the-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands.

What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which gives the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you would be protected from shark attacks. Any shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash.

I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap in place I gasped in horror, my boobs had disappeared!

Eventually, I found one boob cowering under my left armpit. It took a while to find the other. At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib.

The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is now meant to wear her boobs spread across her chest like a speed bump. I realigned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view assessment.

The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately it only fitted those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom and sides. I looked like a lump of Playdough wearing undersized cling wrap.

As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent sales girl popped her head through the curtain, "Oh, there you are," she said, admiring the bathing suit.

I replied that I wasn t so sure and asked what else she had to show me. I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two-piece that gave the appearance of an oversized napkin in a serving ring.

I struggled into a pair of leopard-skin bathers with ragged frills and came out looking like Tarzan s Jane, pregnant with triplets and having a rough day.

I tried on a black number with a midriff fringe and looked like a jellyfish in mourning.

I tried on a bright pink pair with such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear them.

Finally, I found a suit that fit, it was a two-piece affair with a shorts-style bottom and a loose blouse-type top. It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge-friendly, so I bought it. My ridiculous search had a successful outcome, I figured.

When I got it home, I found a label that read, "Material might become transparent in water."

TITANIC
Thursday 12 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
The Titanic sank a hundred years ago on the night of 14/15 April 1912 and James Cameron s celebrated film will be shown to commemorate the event. Costumes" [Maltin s 2012 Movie Guide]. Supper available from 6.00 p.m. Admission: $3.00 [free to film members].

WAGNER: RIENZI
Friday 13 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Wagner s early opera is in the tradition of Parisian grand opera and is quite unlike the style he subsequently began to develop. Full of spectacle and extremely rousing music, it concerns Rienzi, the last of the tribunes in 14th century Rome, but this DVD of the Deutsche Opera s 2010 production transfers the action to the Nazi era with often stunning effect. Supper available during the interval. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members.

THE SONG OF THE CARNIVORES - LEOPARD
Thursday 19 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m.
The fourth talk in the series will be given by Phumuzile Nyoni, an independent leopard researcher, and is entitled: "Leopard - Dispelling the myth that there are plenty of leopards, that they are simply a problem animal, and that we can continue hunting them with no problem". Admission: Free

THE HISTORY BOYS / FAWLTY TOWERS
Thursday 19 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
"The History Boys" is a brilliant, beguiling and extraordinarily entertaining British comedy, written by Alan Bennett, directed by Nicholas Hytner - and with music arranged by Richard Sisson, composer of "The Song of the Carnivores"! "Top marks all round!" [Daily Express] The film will be preceded by the first in a series of occasional showings of episodes of "Fawlty Towers", this one the first of the series and entitled "A Touch of Class". [For those allergic to "Fawlty Towers", "The History Boys" will begin at c.7.45.] Supper available from 6.00 p.m. Admission: $3.00 [free to film members]

VERDI: OTELLO
Friday 20 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
'It is good to have on DVD so telling a reminder of Pl cido Domingo's masterly assumption of the role of Otello, particularly when at the Met in 1996 he was singing opposite Renee Fleming as Desdemona, then at her freshest and purest, yet also with power, looking and sounding girlish." [Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music]. Supper available during the interval Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

3) Roses And Raspberries
Press statement Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA)

On Friday 30 March WOZA founder and national coordinator Jenni Williams received the 2012 Ginetta Sagan Amnesty International USA award.

WOZA is proud to receive this award along with Jenni. The legacy of Ginetta Sagan is one familiar to the activists of WOZA. The award comes at a time of great trials and tribulations for Jenni and WOZA therefore Ginetta lives on to inspire WOZA members as they commemorate turning 10. Amnesty International activists from all around the globe have supported us through the hard times and it is therefore fitting that they also contribute to the good times with us as we turn 10.

Dear Sir
I have also received a bill from the City of Byo re rates, ours went from US$70 per month to US$680 so I phoned them to be told that the Govt has changed the Urban Act and we must now pay for the amount of land you own at the rate of US$42 per acre. So I told him I didn t even earn that kind of money to be told sub divide your property and sell the land. I then told him that the Govt had forced us off our farms in 2002 and now it was doing the same to the people living in town. He told me he understood but there was nothing he could do. So I am going to go to the Chronicle and the Consumer Council and start telling everyone not to pay. What will Council do kick us all out of our homes?
Please could you spread the word and lets hopefully all stick together.
Gay Wilde

TROPICA NURSERY
4 Gibbs Road Glencoe Tel: 288873 0712 806146

We have received some new and different plants which will make a nice change in your gardens. A new Vinca called Illumination Gold which is a ground cover that will brighten up a semi-shaded area and also Dianella gold, a perennial for either sun or semi shade. A new grass is Acorus Gold Dwarf which is brilliant for planting around water features or edging beds.
Some old favourites have come in. There are two different New Zealand Flax - the Rubra and the Yellow Stripe, Brunfelsia (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) Breynia nivosus (Snowbush) and heaps of other plants which are looking great after the rain.

We would also like to take this opportunity to make an appeal for assistance in equipping a rural day care centre/creche. There are 15 children aged between 2 and 5 years. They are looked after during the mornings while their parents work on the farm.
We have found a building but are desperate for some toys, picture books, pillows/cushions, carpeting/rugs and if possible any old playground equipment. If it is in bad shape we can fix it. With winter fast approaching they would also be very grateful for any old clothing and blankets. We will collect from anywhere and will be so grateful for anything at all. With thanks

RAINBOW S END BY LAUREN ST JOHN

This is a story about a paradise lost About an African dream that began with a murder In 1978, in the final, bloodiest phase of the Rhodesian civil war, eleven-year-old Lauren St John moves with her family to Rainbow s End, a wild, beautiful farm and game reserve set on the banks of a slowflowing river The house has been the scene of a horrific attack by guerrillas, and when Lauren s family settles there, a chain of events is set in motion that will change her life irrevocably

Rainbow s End captures the overwhelming beauty and extraordinary danger of life in the African bush Lauren s childhood reads like a girl s own adventure story At the height of the war, Lauren rides through the wilderness on her horse, Morning Star, encountering lions, crocodiles, snakes, vicious ostriches, and mad cows Many of the animals are pets, including Mi Piggy and Bacon and an elegant giraffe named Jenny The constant threat of ruthless guerrillas prowling the land underscores everything, making each day more dangerous, vivid, and prized than the last
