1) Editorial

I Vuvuzela
Alone I sound like a wandering drunk,
Meandering among potholes in the dark,
A mournful and haunting cry, the ghost
Of things lost and might have beens.
But in a giant concrete bowl I join the horde,
Blow out with thousands and more, and howl
And roar out my rage and fear and love.
This is our only way to show emotion,
Our triumph and our loss. I know that now.
I must channel my hopes and fears
Through this flimsy garish child's trumpet,
Like the trumpets at the end of the world.
Pour my heart into the general uproar,
Fill my lungs, rattle my ribs, deafen the ears.
No matter what the field is doing, whether
We have won or lost, I must shout out
My need for justice, vibrate my ears
And shake with apocalyptic sound,
Empty my chest of pent-up anger and love,
Pour it out through the vuvuzela mouth.
The baas who has been difficult all week -
Blow him away; the wife who nags and nags -
See her float into the sky! The countless divots
Of modern life, politicians, loan sharks lurking
On the corner, bites that smart and sting.
God bless Africa, we all sing in mindless love,
Trudge home sated and replete, and safe
From the waiting cops until next week.
Liz Davies

HOCKEY ASSOCIATION OF ZIMBABWE
PRESS RELEASE 5
KHUMALO HOCKEY STADIUM, BULAWAYO
A PHOENIX ARISES

The Khumalo Hockey Stadium is shrugging off the scaffolding and contractors to emerge, like a Phoenix from the ashes, as one of the finest hockey facilities not just in Africa, but globally. The Ministry of Public Works has pulled out all the stops to make sure that Zimbabwe will have a world class facility to host the 2nd African Olympic Hockey Qualifier that starts on 2nd September 2011. The facility has been restored to its 1995 glory, and is a facility that not just Bulawayo, but Zimbabwe can be proud of.

The Pitches
Two new pitches have been laid, and the first use of the new fields occurred on Sunday 21 August when the National Men's Team squad training took place at the KHS. The A Pitch is a Global standard water based field, suitable for all international events. The carpet rests upon a 13mm Elastic layer.
The B field is a sand obscured pitch, and rests on a newly designed foam shock pad. If watered it would play to a similar standard as the A field, but water is not required for normal use. In addition to the full size match pitch, there are two practice fields laid out across the width of the field. Due to the size of the pitch, these fields are more than adequate to allow for twice as many players to practice at any given time.
The two pitches will be tested and accredited by the FIH during the week prior to the AOQ.

The Environment
In the refurbishment of the KHS there has been a focus on environmental issues. Water consumption on the turfs has been reduced to 25% of that previously required. This has been achieved largely through the installation of a sand obscured pitch on the B field, which requires no water when being used.
Water applied to the fields will be recycled through a system of drains, which will also capture rain water in large underground water tanks. Boreholes will supply the gardens with water while reclaimed water facilities also exist. Over 50 indigenous trees have been planted within the facility, whilst drought resistant indigenous plants have been used to resuscitate the gardens.
The old turf will be reallocated and used for school sport development, and consequently won't be discarded at this time, but is effectively recycled into another use. The two new shock pads have a life in excess of 20 years and so will not require replacement for many years, therefore again contributing to the environment.

Youth
The HAZ and MHB have arranged an FIH sanctioned youth development programme to coincide with the AOQ. This event kicked off on Wednesday 24 August and will run through the period of the AOQ. This programme has seen selected children from across Bulawayo's schools of ages 6 to 12 years being offered the chance to play on the new turf under the coaching of current National Players. In particular children from Government schools who would not normally get this opportunity have been included in the programme.

Final Clean-Up
There is a final clean-up taking place on 26 / 27 August. Any members of the public who want to participate, or want more information should contact Mr James Watson, M.H.B Project Coordinator / A.O.Q. Marketing Manager Email: mhb.projects@gmail.com Cell: 0713608238 Inter-provincial Tournament
Meanwhile the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe will be hosting the annual Inter-provincial Hockey Tournament at the KHS on 27 and 28 August. This will allow a large number of players from across the country to experience the new fields ahead of the AOQ.

My name is Bronwyn Palmer, I'm from Harare and am planning a trip down to byo to do a week of Brazilian Cacau Keratin Treatment. I will be starting on saturday 27th August 2011 8:00am sharp till thursday 1st August. If I have an excess of ladies I will stay until the3rd August 2011. I need a minimum of 10 ladies to be able to cover my costs of coming down. I will also be able to do a few ladies, gents and childrens cuts between the Brazilian treatments.
The treatment takes between 2hrs 30mins to 3hrs for each lady depending on the length of the hair. The longer the hair the longer it takes. Short hair will be $200, medium to long $250-$300.. After you have read the information below, and if you have any further questions, please give me a call0773247721. Other wise please call and book with me between sat 27/08/11 and 01/09/11.
BRASIL CACAU KERATIN TREATMENT by Cadiveu is the most innovative and effective professional smoothing treatment available. Authentic and genuine Brazilian Keratin Treatment. MADE IN BRAZIL. BRASIL CACAU removes 95% of frizz or curl on natural or chemically treated hair. It effectively rebuilds hair damaged by excessive chemical services. BRASIL CACAU improves the condition of the hair by adding a protective Keratin layer around the hair shaft thus eliminating frizz, smoothing the hair cuticles and enhancing your colour. The end result is straighter, smoother, incredibly shinier, stronger, frizz free hair, which is more manageable and humidity resistant.
NO HARSH CHEMICALS. It can be applied over coloured, highlighted, bleached, chemically straightened or curled hair and assists in strengthening and adding amazing shine and control to any hair condition. Don't be forced to wait 72 hours...! Our results are instant! Unlike other keratin treatments, the minute you leave the salon, you can wash your hair, wear a pony tail, use clips and pins, go to gym or swim. Your hair will be straighter, smooth, frizz free and extremely radiant. Q. How long will the BRASIL CACAU treatment last? A. Three to four months provided the BRASIL CACAU range of aftercare products are used. BRASIL CACAU treatment is a cumulative treatment. The more often you have the treatment applied, the healthier your hair will be and the longer the results will last. Q. What happens to my hair after the BRASIL CACAU treatment is at the end of its life cycle? A. Your hair will revert back to its original state about 12 weeks prior to the treatment. It will be in a better and stronger condition than before the treatment. Q. How will my hair look after the BRASIL CACAU treatment? A. It will be much shinier, full of volume, effortless to manage, stronger, straighter, healthier and frizz free. Humidity will no longer be a problem. Q. Will BRASIL CACAU make my hair dead straight? A. That depends on the type of hair you have. If you have straight, frizzy hair, the treatment will eliminate the frizz and give the hair incredible shine. If your hair is wavy, BRASIL CACAU will make your hair naturally straight and healthy. If your hair is very curly, the treatment will remove most of the frizz, enhancing the natural curl or wave. if you have any further questions, please give me a call 0773247721. Other wise please call and book with me between sat 27/08/11 and 01/09/11.

Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
LESLIE HOWARD (PIANO)
Thursday 15 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Leslie Howard celebrates the 200th anniversary of Liszt's birth on 22 October 1811 with three major works as well as music by another great composer-pianist, Sergei Rachmaninov: Liszt: Variations on a theme of J.S.Bach: "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" Liszt: Sarabande and Chaconne on themes from Handel's Opera "Almira" Liszt: Romancero Espagnol Rachmaninov: Three piano pieces from November 1917 Rachmaninov: Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op.36 (original version, 1913)
The performance of the Romancero Espagnol will be the first anywhere in Africa! It is a 20-minute fantasy - of enormous difficulty even by Liszt's standards - based on traditional Spanish themes.which was only recently discovered. The rest of the programme features two of Liszt's lesser-known pieces derived respectively from music by Bach and Handel and, after the interval, three short pieces that Rachmaninov wrote just before he left Russia for ever and his magnificent Second Sonata, not often heard but a work to rival the popular piano concertos. This concert should be one of the year's highlights, if not the highlight... Admission: $10.00 / $5.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

Hi All.
I'm sure you are all aware of, or have heard of the Zimfests that go on every year in London and Australia in aid of Zimbabwean charities?? I have been asked by WeZimbabwe, the organization that started Zimfest, to do one here in Harare, which is going to go ahead on the 10th of December. All funds raised will be in aid of Homes in Zimbabwe (www.hiz.org.uk), which is a UK based organization that supports all the old age pensioners, including funding organizations such as S.O.A.P. We plan on having a really big event, with stalls and jumping castles for the kids and a whole bunch of live music, the whole 9 yards basically. I have organized the one's in Perth up until when I moved back here to Harare, and they have always been a very very good day, which is VERY much looked forward to for the rest of the year!! Read more about this year's Harare event at the Facebook event page, (http://www.facebook.com/ )
So with this in mind, I would like to put out to the community to please be on the look out for anyone that can help us out in a few areas, such as donating prizes for our raffles and competitions which have always been a really big funds puller, and the bigger our raffle the more money we can get to the old topps! So please if you have anything, no matter how big or small that you or your business is in a position to donate, please do get in contact with me on guy@kurumidza.com, and you or your business will be exposed and thanked in every way possible on the day. Absolutely anything goes when it comes to this sort of thing - from paintings to hampers to vouchers to services.... anything goes!! Other things which would definitely not go astray as a donation would be things like jumping castles for the kids, temporary fencing, security, use of a large-ish silent generator, sound and lighting equipment, etc etc (all the things that are usually required at a large event). Wouldn't it be awesome if a whole bunch of businesses could get together and each donate a different aspect to what is required for this event??
There are also sponsorship opportunities available, in various sponsorship levels to suit the size of your business. If you know anyone that might be interested, please e-mail me on guy@kurumidza.com If you would like to set-up a stall for home produce or anything like that, please also get in touch with me. Any help anyone could give would obviously be VERY much appreciated!!! Thanks for reading!

A few weeks ago there was an item in Morning Mirror in which a charity was requesting empty plastic icecream containers. Can you remember who it was? I have several which I would like to deliver.

APPEAL
72 year old Mr J is in desperate need of a hip replacement operation.
He lives in a retirement home in Bulawayo, has a small pension and still works part-time. Even selling his old car would not pay for the operation and would deprive him of much needed income. His family are unable to pay for this operation which is quoted at $9,910 of which medical aid will cover $4510 leaving a shortfall of $5,400.
Bulawayo Help Network alone is unable to raise this amount for one person and is appealing to your overstretched generosity for contributions.
Mr J is in great pain and often feels he can no longer go on. Can you help us, help him? For further information or to make contributions, please call BULAWAYO HELP NETWORK 130A Jason Moyo Street, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe or Tel: +263 - 9 - 67085 or email byohelp@netconnect.co.zw.
With thanks as always.

THE SEAN LABUSCAGNE CANCER TRUST
2012 CANCER CALENDAR - Support, Celebrate & Remember
In early 2011, THE SEAN LABUSCAGNE CANCER TRUST was created. The fight against cancer is never a short one and the mandate of the Trust is primarily to ensure that Sean succeeds in his particular battle but it also aims to raise awareness of the prevalence of cancer within our community and to show support to other families affected by the disease. The Sean Labuscagne Cancer Trust is embarking on a 2012 Cancer Calendar which hopes to put a face (or should we say 'faces') to this disease by asking cancer sufferers, survivors and even those who have passed away, to be featured in the calendar under the month that represents their particular fight. Eg September Lymphoma & Leukemia, Thyroid, Gynecologic, Uterine/Endometrial, Ovarian, Prostate & Childhood Cancers
SUPPORT - highlight your own struggle to lend support to other people who are also fighting. CELEBRATE - give people hope by celebrating your victory. REMEMBER - Honour a friend or family member that lost the battle but who is not forgotten. We plan to hold a photo-shoot in September for everyone who is able to attend but will also accept photographs from those of you who live far away as well as old photographs of loved ones who have passed away and are being commemorated. We aim high and hope to have the calendar on sale throughout Zimbabwe as well as in Botswana, The UK, Australia ... basically anywhere and everywhere that there are Zimbabweans who have been affected by cancer and wish to participate and support.
Should you be interested please send your details : Name, contact number, email, type of cancer and status to one of the following :

HELP REQUIRED
Can any one let us have some background information on Mabukuwene in Burnside. The National Trust of Zimbabwe (the owner) is wanting to revive this park for the enjoyment of Bulawayo residents. However we need to know more about the history of the place, the origin of the structures and any little titbits that will be included in our project profile and ultimately in a small historical display to be erected there. Who is operating the place? The Trust has no idea any more. Any comments much appreciated.
Thanks

The Vintage and Classic Car Club of Matabeleland
have organised a run to Great Zimbabwe to commemorate Duly's Hundredth Anniversary of having the Ford Dealership. The cars will leave from Duly's Bulawayo and Duly's Harare at 8.00am on Friday 2nd September 2011. Any one who would be interested in witnessing the start of the run is more than welcome to do so. There are approximately twenty cars from Bulawayo and twenty-five from Harare of varying ages. It is interesting to note that most of the older cars are coming from Bulawayo and the newer classics from Harare. The vehicles age from 1912 through to present day. The participants will be spending three nights at Great Zimbabwe, returning on Monday 5th.

Part 2 of the Duly's Story
With his adventurous spirit aflame, Charles Duly had his ears open for any opportunity to get to South Africa. It was not long before he heard of a vacancy with the Cape Government Railway. He put in his application and to his delight he was taken on. Before the year was over he had landed at the Cape and started work in the railway workshops at Uitenhage. His drawing of Locomotive no. 580 was shown at the Uitenhage Industrial Exhibition in January 1891 and won for him a first prize. He worked for the Cape Railways for two years before stories of the glamour of the new Witwatersrand Goldfield tempted him afresh. There was no railway line to Johannesburg at the time and he had to finish the last stage of his journey by mail coach. Johannesburg was hungry for young men with engineering experience and soon Charles Duly was specializing in machinery repairs for the mines. During his time off his recreation was cycling. The modern safety bicycle had now taken over from the old penny-farthing. Charles Duly enjoyed cycling and appeared on many of the well-known cycle tracks around Johannesburg. The pattern towards the transport business was beginning to take shape.

It was in Johannesburg in 1893 that there occurred another event that was to be a turning point in his life. At a Methodist Church social at Fordsburg, he chanced to meet Edith Harris, daughter of William Harris. It was love at first sight. But it took another seven years before Charles was in a position to make her his bride. Stories from the new frontier in Rhodesia filtered back to the Rand and tempted young Charles yet again. It was only a few months before, that the Matabele had been defeated and the Shangani Patrol had been completely annihilated, not far from Bulawayo. Charles Duly must have realised the need for young men with engineering ability in the new country beyond the Limpopo. He set out from Johannesburg on a bicycle along the dusty tracks. He carried his total worldly assets consisting of one hundred gold sovereigns in his tool bag. He was accompanied by another young immigrant, a Scottish carpenter, whose name has been lost in the passage of time.

They rode to Pretoria then on to Pietersburg over the Limpopo through Tuli and Fort Victoria and then by the mail coach route to Bulawayo. It was an incredible journey for that time and the hazards were many including lions and other wild animals and malaria, of which there was no cure at that time. The natives were still very unfriendly and there were no bridges across the numerous rivers, which had to be swum with a bicycle slung over the back. The same route could be travelled in a modern motor car in less than a day. An ox wagon would take anything from 13 to 20 weeks. Charles and his Scottish friend completed the journey in just 10 days. They would have averaged 80km a day in sweltering heat. When Charles arrived in Bulawayo, it had a population of only 2000 Europeans. It boasted six hotels and three newspapers. Sadly none of the hotels now exist, but the Chronicle Newspaper still survives. The small town already boasted a race course, an athletic club, cricket pitch, tennis courts and many other sporting facilities. It was in Bulawayo that Charles set up a business that was to flourish for over a 100 years.
