3) Roses And Raspberries Roses to Zimbabweans who are making us proud . . . Jestina Mukoko and National Healing Co-Minister Sekai Holland have been awarded the prestigious French National Order of the Legion of Honour, for what French authorities termed their outstanding virtues in serving their country and others. Attorney Beatrice Mtetwa has been awarded another international prize, for her work defending Zimbabwean rights activists and other victims of human rights abuses. Betty Makoni was recently listed as one of Newsweek's 150 most impressive women for her work in helping sexually abused girls. Raoul du Toit is among the six recipients of the prestigious US$150 000 International Goldman Environmental Prize Award for 2011. I would like to send a big raspberry to the nosey Suburbs neighbour who has called SPCA to my home not once but twice recently. The first time SPCA came when I was not home and at a very busy time for me and took my 13 year old dog who has had a harmless lump on his back leg for many years now. The lump was not causing my dog any pain or affecting his quality of life at all. Due to this call out of SPCA they forced me to put down my old dog which made me very sad and left my poor bitch feeling very lonely. So I spoke to SPCA and saved a poor unfortunate puppy that would have been put down from SPCA to become a companion for my bitch. This very cute and loving soul however came to me ill and skinny and as he did not eat while he was sick got yet skinnier. He is now on the mend but has not had time to gain weight yet and low and behold I get another visit from the SPCA inspector. Please people look at my other dog. If she doesn't look mistreated why would I be mistreating the other one. Use a bit of common sense before you set SPCA on people there may be a good explanation for why a dog looks the way it does that you couldn't know by just walking past my house. Thank you.

Mary Chennells NORMAN TRAVERS Here in the UK we recently saw a documentary on Imire Game Park in E Zimbabwe, so I was intrigued to see the following article in the latest issue of the UK BSAP Outpost and hope you will as moved by it as I was: " Norman Travers, MC , MSM , who was a prominent farmer and well known figure in the Marandellas and Wedza districts, died on the 18th March 2012 at the age of 88. He was particularly well known as a leading Game Farmer and conservationist. He established the well known Imire Game Park on his Wedza farm. The following tribute to Norman Travers appeared in the Rhodesian Services Association of New Zealand Newsletter for June 2010 : ' Only the elephants could have delivered such a moving tribute to Norman Travers. Shortly after he was buried last month on his farm" Imire", in eastern Zimbabwe, two forty year old Elephant bulls arrived unbidden, wandered through the crowd of 250 mourners, lumbered up to the coffin and sniffed it, long and intently. When the last spadeful of earth had been cast on the grave, these massive beasts stood together on the heap of ground he lay beneath. Three times during the ensuing week, they returned and stood by his grave. The Travers's Family is convinced they were mourning for elephants are known to have a fascination with death. His three sons and daughter grew up in a household where his animals, included a half ton rhino, wandered in and out of the house, ate up the flower beds and shared breakfast with the family on the lawn on Sundays. Most days he and his wife would go for evening walks with Cassius the lion, Bere the hyena, Dudley the warthog, Potter the Otter,along with two labradors, a dachshund and a cat. ' RIP Norman Travers. Unfortunately, I have to start by saying that it has been a very tough year so far - every time one can just about make ends meet, they move the ends!! Sadly, so many of our Pensioners are finding it harder and harder to survive in this new economy based in US$ - they're battling as much as they ever did before, if not more so! The cost of living has grown exponentially, and many of our pensioners are in a worse state of destitution than they ever were when the Zimbabwean economy was in such a sorry state. It seems that even though we are US$ based now, the inflation is growing at an alarming rate, and besides this, our pensioners have only access to their original pensions, which, with the chopping and changing of the currencies, are basically worth nothing. For example, rates for electricity and water (which are basic human rights!) for a Pensioner in Coronation, are, on average (plus rent), US$75 per month. The average railway pension is between $14-$29 per month. This means our pensioners are $46-$61 in the red before they even start their month, and this is before any food! And then. Bread alone is $1, so 1 loaf every 2 days brings the total to US$100 per month, before any other kind of sustenance! The majority of our Pensioners registered with us earn pensions on average of $37 per month. This doesn't cover rent and rates. Let alone food. Our pensioners are destitute!!! Their situation is CRITICAL! Please, help us to help them! EMRAS AMBULANCE: In the first quarter we transported a total of 15 people QUARTERLY COST US$ 450 CLINIC & MEDICINES: 3 Clinics are run on a fortnightly basis: Coronation Cottages, Rhodes Jubilee and Garden Park. These are essential to ensuring the health of our patients as well as supplying them with their chronic medication. We see on average 60 pensioners every fortnight, sometimes rising to 80. QUARTERLY COST US$ 16300 OPTICIAN AND DENTISTRY: Due to our funds being reduced because of the recession we have not been able to assist with optician or dentistry this quarter. We have focused more on the life saving medicines and clinics. FOOD 4 HOMES BULAWAYO: Deliveries continue on a monthly basis. Dry goods and meat or chickens when available are delivered the last week of every month. The homes are still in need as their residents are not able to pay the rents that the homes require to be viable, which leaves the Homes short every month. Fresh vegetables, eggs and fruit are delivered on a weekly basis. Verity Amm Soup kitchen feeds on average 300 pensioners a week. QUARTERLY COST US$ 15300 UPCOMING FUND RAISERS: We have a few in the pipeline for this year so please watch the FB group and Morning Mirror for more info. Our first Fundraiser is a May day celebration, in the old English tradition of the Maypole and fair to be held at Southern Comfort Lodge on the 30 April 2011. Start 10am until late. The following may help. Article 6.10 Section 3 of the SADC Protocol onTransport, Communication and Meteorology states ....... 'a licence issued in one Member State shall be valid for the driving of a vehicle in respect of which it has been issued in any other member state'. So there is no question about the validity of a Zim. licence in RSA. I suspect that the 'additional licence' was a coded request for a piece of paper - usually very dirty - approximately 17,5 x 6,5 cms with a portrait of an elderly American on one side with numbers in each corner or the South African equivalent.
