1) Editorial

One's status in life is definitely governed by the state of one's coat hangers. It was Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest" who brought the coat hanger to its rightful fame.

I quote "No. wire... hangers. What's wire hangers doing in this closet when I told you: no wire hangers EVER? I work and work 'till I'm half-dead, and I hear people saying, "She's getting old." And what do I get? A daughter... who cares as much about the beautiful dresses I give her... as she cares about me. What's wire hangers doing in this closet? Answer me. I buy you beautiful dresses, and you treat them like they were some dishrag."

When we were little we had nothing but wire hangers in our cupboards, the reason being that a group of folk used to make wire hangers at a sheltered workshop called Abilities. Some of the hangers would rust and leave rust marks on the clothes. We did however progress to those wooden ones with the wire hook, remember those wooden ones that gave you splinters ?

The finer folk amongst us had their wooden hangers covered with pretty crochet covers ... now crocheting covers for coat hangers must be on that list called "life's too short" but they looked pretty... Mum even had some wooden hangers carefully covered in velvet, now they looked splendid in a girl's wardrobe.

Progress came at last and we all moved to plastic hangers, those ones with the extra hook on which one could hang slips by their straps to prevent them from falling off.

The more careful amongst us housewives would ensure the hooks all faced the same way in the closet and the obsessive would colour code clothes and hangers !!

Today one is spoilt for choice, HeeHoo's suits must all be on one of those giant cedar hangers with the rubberised bottom bar to prevent the trousers from escaping into a heap on the closet floor. Woe betide the person who uses a common or garden plastic hanger or a WIRE HANGER !! Shriek !!

My favourite are those hangers with rubber areas to stop the clothes from slipping off the end and when my babes were small I managed to rescue from an aunty some dear little hangers specially for tiny dresses and tops.

Now when SheeHoo was in the States, her cupboard was filled with wire coat hangers. Its pretty cheap to have clothes dry cleaned in the USA and each item comes back from the dry cleaner with its own plastic cover and wire coat hanger. Before shehoo moved back to Africa, I carefully bundled the hangers and took them back to the dry cleaner. They looked at me rather strangely and I am sure they binned them as soon as my back was turned !!

The invention of the wire coat hanger is attributed to Albert J Parkhouse in 1903. In response to co-workers' complaints of too few coat hooks, and in a burst of inventive inspiration, Albert J Parkhouse bent a piece of wire into two ovals with the ends twisted together to form a hook. He then he grabbed some wire and twisted it around so that it fit inside the shoulders of his coat. he bent another wire to curl in the center, allowed him to hang the coat practically anywhere he wanted. he continued to refine the idea over the next few weeks and soon, all the other employees started using copies provided by Albert.

Victorian women's skirts and bustles received great care by hanger inventors and manufacturers, with adjustable hangers often using spring systems to hold the waistbands and allow the skirts to retain pleats and folds. Moving further into the twentieth century, wire manufacturers were producing hundreds of styles of hangers meant to shape and contour. Spring coiled wire gave dimension to some, while extra hooks allowed belts and other accoutrements to hang from others. Travel hangers collapsed, folded, and telescoped with ease.not to be outdone, tailors and clothing merchants advertised their businesses on specialty hangers.

So come on examine your closet and throw out all those wire hangers !!

This beginners' class starts right from scratch with all the basics. Please bring water and one of your favourite scarves to tie around your hips, if you don't have a coin-belt. Cost: $6 per class (includes $1 to venue) Please note that our weekly class at Shape Gym is still going on Wednesdays 4 - 5pm which is more for beginners with some experience.
And a bit of info for your interest:
Every woman can belly dance! In ancient cultures, belly dancing was done by women for women to benefit female health, fertility, childbirth, and general well-being at every life phase. It is suitable for women of every age, shape and size. Belly dancing celebrates the beauty of a woman in her natural form, using movements that follow the natural shape and flow of the female body. It is excellent for toning the waist, hips, abs, and for exercising in a fun way. It is about you finding your own beautiful and confident expression, through dance, whilst giving your body an enjoyable and effective work-out. On Friday 18th February at 5.30pm, we will be starting 'FREE DANCE" at "Stillhaven": This is a class inspired by the free dance classes I have attended in Durban, Cape Town and London - it is all over the world now - a dance class that gives people the opportunity to let go, release tension, unwind, open up, and just enjoy the sheer delight and liberation of moving your body to music. Of course it is also a brilliant work-out for your body! But also a way into your heart, and a way out of your head. Open to both men and women. For further enquiries contact Kelly Bentley 0773 660 940 or see you soon on the dance floor!

3) Roses And Raspberries
Dearest Mags
Please would you kindly include the following two pieces in the next edition of the Morning Mirror? Thanks so much. Will get to Edith Duly either tomorrow or Friday.

ROSES AND RASPBERRIES
---------------------------------------
I would like to give the Directors and Staff of the Hillside Dams Conservancy the biggest bunch of (virtual) red roses for all the hard work and dedication that have seen the restoration of the Hillside Dams and the establishment of "The Boma" restaurant. So many sectors of the community enjoy the facilities and are very thankful to have this wonderful venue within the city limits. Church groups, avid walkers, bird watchers, school children, dog walkers, families having a day out, charitable organisations and so many more enjoy this wonderful venue on a daily basis.
I am aware that an event occurred recently that was not in tune with the ethos of the Conservancy. Sometimes undesirable things happen and l applaud the Conservancy who came out immediately to assure the community that it would never happen again. I hope this has calmed down the folk that have gotten so irate over the incident. I wonder if these people have ever taken the time to thank the people who work so hard to keep the Dams safe and beautiful? Do you walk your dogs there or picnic with friends? Do you take the time to think about all the charities that have been supported and promoted by the Conservancy?

The money raised for the Cancer Association? I personally think the Drums Of Peace are awesome and the fact that they represent something so positive is a wonderful thing. I hope they will be back at the Hillside Dams in the near future.
Thank you to Neil and Fiona Rix, Mrs. Sibanda, Rob and all the staff at the Conservancy for everything you have done to enrich the lives of the Bulawayo Community. We are truly very blessed.
Rosy Shearing

VAL BELL recently made a familiarization visit to the Falls and to Ivory Lodge to which is close to Hwange Game Reserve, where elephants are practically nose to nose with the visitors, with the inquisitive younger generation ambling up to the viewing shelter for a real close look. The matriarch of the Falls hotels, the Victoria Falls Hotel, was as elegant and historically interesting as always and the Sunday breakfast was Top Billing. The same could be said for the dinner at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. The Ilala Lodge is a charming hotel with spacious bedrooms and the lunch served on the verandah overlooking the lovely garden, was tasty. The Gorges Lodge, although 21kms from the Falls, has scenery with a difference. The view from the Gorges Lodge with the river flowing way below is awesome. Not everyone can afford the pricey hotels, but Backpackers Bazaar, close to the Publicity Association keep lists of budget and less expensive lodges. Phone Mags Varley on (013)42208.

The Executive Committee of the Association wish to acknowledge with grateful thanks the support of the Standard Chartered Bank with the prompt payment of their subscriptions and in many other ways. The Association's staff also owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Ernst & Young for their audit of the Association's yearly accounts, on a honorary basis.

Val Bell and her hardworking staff thank the BPA members again for their valued support financial and otherwise over the years and look forward to continued support in the years to come. VAL BELL

Thanks so much for the memories. I salute all those stalwarts that have remained and tried to re-build. How I miss the Jacaranda's in October!

MEMORIES OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN EXHIBITION
Forward all the memories of the Rhodes Centennial Exhib. in BUlawayo from Fairbridgites all over the world. I can remember recently seeing the Queen wearing the beautiful flame lily brooch we gave her Mom, The Queen Mother. She wore it for her birthday, I think, and I was thrilled, hoping that Britain had forgiven us wicked Rhodies!
I've left the Fairbridge names on in case you remember any of them. Terrible bunch of old lads! Love, Liz Davies
Subject: Re: Central Africa Exhibition
Hi Marcel please pass on to whomsoever needs it.
I well remember the Rhodes Centenary exhibition which took place in the park. They built a massive hall there whose name I forget at the moment. Yes there were loads of free samples, two that come to mind were the miniaturavilione cokes complete with their own yellow plastic trays the other is the triangular pieces of hardboard marketed by a South African company Timberit I remember underneath the junior dorms were thousands of these used for making our Dinky Car circuits. The Kenyan pavilion had a massive Indian fella in full ceremonial Uniform, who had a massive Halberd(?) which he thrust across the doorway to stop anyone entering. We used to spend hours making false moves trying to catch him out(Never did!). The De Beers Company had their guard dogs from Kimberley there that used to give demos every day of their work.. As someone mentioned the halle Orchestra performed there,as did George Formby. Then there was Rhodes's personal railway wagon that was in the Railway Siding. A well crafted coach that had been made in the UK and shipped out,(as were all the coaches at that time). To show how high a degree of workmanship was used on them a lot of them in the railway Museum are still in first class condition. When I was last in Byo the park was still in a pretty good condition but I believe recent events have spoilt it.it was still possible to see where the various Pavilions had been. Talking of the park on one of my 'holidays' whilst at Fairbridge was to a lady (Mrs Law) in Livingstone . One day she was pine trees showing us some old photo albums and there was a couple of the Borrow St Swimming baths(Her late husband had built them)in their very early days. Strange to see it with all the beautiful pine trees that tower over the pool nowadays as little planted shrubs! I wish I'd have got some copies. Must Go sleep beckons
Geoff Crimes

Memories?
1. The Halle orchestra. ? A stationery bike and a competition to find its fastest rider. ?Roger Lumley was always having a go on it. I think the machine cracked under the strain in the end. All that maltabella porridge?
Best, Tim F. Tim Flinn

Reminds me of the time when Q. Gibson and I hatched a scam for free rides at he Luna Park attached to the Exhibition. We found a dump behind the fairground where there was a heap of old and torn used tickets. We somehow patched some of these tickets together and commenced to use them. All went well for a while until some sharp eyed ticket collector spotted our crude ruse. Quentin and I scarpered before we could be nabbed and taken to the local plod. Those fake exhibits I remember well, but there were also plenty of free samples and handouts, of which we took full advantage. Stallholders must have dreaded it whenever Fairbridge boys descended on them like a horde of vultures! What a hoot
Bill Sutherland

Hi you guys. For some reason I cannot quite put my finger on, this story reminds me of the Central African Rhodes Centenary Exhibition and the time I nicked a pkt of Custard Creams from the Lobels stand, and rushed to the PK to find hat the bastards had replaced the contents with a block of wood. The same thing happened with a pkt of cigs that I nicked. Goes to show that even in those days a kid could not trust grownups. At least this story will prove that unlike Seb Coe,

WRIGHTS NURSERY NEWS LETTER 1/02/11
Our January rainfall continued unabated and in Hillside we finished off with 310 mm. This exceeded the previous record month in 10 years (Dec 2007 with 250 mm). It looked like we had skipped the traditional " Mid-season dry spell" but it has come in late this year. The Botswana Upper High is well established and usually lasts 10 -20 days. The long-range forecast is still for plenty more rain once it starts again.

WHAT TO DO IN FEBRUARY
This month it is a battle to keep up with all that rain- generated growth. The following are some of the things you could look at: Look out for Armyworm and Lawn caterpillar. You will often see large groups of crows on open grass areas and that is a sure sign that the caterpillars are out and about in force. Your lawns could have a very patchy look to them and it's not the rain. Run a hosepipe for a couple of minutes on the area between the green lawn and the tatty lawn. (The caterpillars eat their way out in a circle)
If you have an infestation you will see the caterpillar's craw up the grass to escape being drowned. What do they look like? A big one is as long as your thumb. They range in colour from gray to dark green and have stripes down their sides. They are hairless and some times described as 'oily' looking. What do you do, especially if you are concerned about your birds? Spray with a product like Fenvelerate. It is a pyrethroid and breaks down with in a couple of hours. Spray at dusk. The caterpillars will be very dead and unappetizing the following day. Its only the wiggly ones that attract the birds. Start you winter garden planning. Keep up with your compost work. You will have a good supply this year. Split members of the grass family this time of the year. Feed all your plants and fruit trees, as they will all be some what leached after the rain.

ENVIRO/ECO
South Africa ran a very good environmental campaign against " Invader Plants" some years ago. With their different climatic conditions many of their invader problem plants did not affect us unduly. With all the rain I want to give you some idea of which are problem invader plants in Bulawayo. Lantana camara. It is everywhere. Cultivated into neat hedges, peeping over walls and producing fruit for the birds like crazy. You will see it in its most familiar cherry pie yellow/ red colours as well as in pink and in white. The stems always have a back facing hook on them. Lantana is a difficult plant to control. If you pull it out and leave one little root behind it will sprout leaves and get growing again. It is best treated chemically with Round Up/ Drive Weeder with a 5% solution and a wetter. Round Up has a hormonal action and works through the leaves. Cut the lantana back to knee-high and wait for the new leaves to grow out nice and thick.( 4-6 weeks). Then spray to cover all the leaves. In a week or so you will see the leaves yellowing. Any green leaves should be re-sprayed. Balloon vine. This very vigorous vine covers trees in no time. It is thin stemmed and the leaves look ornamental. It produces a green balloon, which looks a little like a gooseberry. Inside is a black hard round seed.
It spreads very quickly all over you garden and will shade out and kill many plants This one is not easy to deal with as you have to just pull it out of the trees and shrubs, but it does make good compost. Next time I will deal with Bug Weed, Queen of the Night and the Fountain Grass. The Lantana species sold in Nurseries are all sterile seed varieties and can be grown quite happily.

WHATS HAPPENING AT THE NURSERY?
It is still too early to start planting Petunias though they are already being offered for sale. If we go into another wet month or two they will not do at all well. They are usually only planted out as the rains start to taper off. The winter seedlings are just starting to come in but you will only see them towards the end of the month. Valentines day is on Monday the 14th and there will be hand sprays available on Sat and Monday. As usual all the red roses are being exported overseas and the local market gets virtually nothing.

FAQ'S
Just about all the questions were about rain related problems. The hot dry spell will cure most of them and some additional feeding will also help. We had a few problems with opening the News Letter. I run an Apple Mac and a virus attack is a very unusual event. I have done a 100% scan and am clear. If you have a problem it may be that you have a virus problem. Compost making day is getting closer as there are now 5 interested folk.
Happy Gardening.
Dave
