Depending on your circle of friends, you could purchase hundreds of cards to send to loved ones and acquaintances on one's local or overseas contact list. We made a point of only ever buying Charity Christmas Cards and these would be sold on given days usually from about October, at the Large City Hall or the Harker Hall. I recall scores of caring ladies from the various charities, sitting at large tables with their beautifully reconditioned Christmas Cards for sale in shoe boxes !! Some were reconditioned or some had photos or paintings by local artists, sponsored by local business houses. We would make a circuit of the room buying from our favorites charities, under the watchful eye of the amazing charity minded ladies !! Twenty cards from the Downs Syndrome Association, twenty from the SPCA, twenty from St Johns Ambulance, Twenty from TOC H and so on. I can just picture the Card Bee Making Circles that had taken place the whole year where like minded institutions spent happy days making and collating those hundreds of cards. Many were from old Christmas cards carefully cut and pasted (With glue even !) onto A 4 paper donated by local business people, and then neatly folded into four. Envelopes too were generally donated. (Remember the good old envelope ? Also a thing of the past !!) Then came the tedious (I found it tedious as life was fraught in those days) but most found it a glorious walk down memory lane as the good old address book was hauled out of the drawer and old and precious friends were remembered. Some cards had a banal Christmas message, some were given special thoughts and often a typed (or hand written - groan) epistle was placed inside of the years events !! Then the important business of getting the cards off before the deadline had to be attended to. The Post Office would issue stern public warnings in the press, of dates to be adhered to for surface mail postings, otherwise one would be charged punitive airmail postage rates !! To the USA, Asia and Australia cards had be posted before the end of October if I remember correctly, to the UK and Europe probably by the middle of November, African countries had the grace of end of November and then local cards possibly the middle of December. The Poor Old Postman would then start wobbling on his clapped out old red bicycle to the postbox at the front gate, bringing sacks of cheery mail instead of bills for a change !! Cards from all over the world would pour in from people one only ever heard from annually. Hanging up the cards was fun, we have a giant glass sliding door onto which we would "sticki stuff the cards (press-stick) or sometimes we would use those tiny pegs and loop them around the indoor garden. Furtive glances were sometimes cast at peoples wealth of displayed cards to see if they had more friends than you did !! It was so nice to hear news from abroad, or even news from a neighbour down the road and some of the cards were absolutely glorious. There were cards with glistening snow and sparkling silver and gold glitter, indicative of Christmas in the northern hemisphere, or there were cards with wildlife or cartoons. I most loved the ones of the Holy Family, with the beautiful faces of Mary and the Christ Child. Christmas was Christmas in those days, no one was scared to say the "C" word !! I just hate it when I see the word Xmas, or see that the White House tree is called a "Holiday Tree" instead of a Christmas tree, what is the world coming too ???? Nowadays of course, most of us have gone to the e cards which is very very sad indeed. But then one does not only correspond with friends only at Christmas time as the world has opened up so much that it is so easy to send off a quick e mail every day if one has the wish to do so. I remember when the first internet cards began to circulate furiously and our antediluvian third world e mail system would literally electronically buckle under the strain of the christmas flurry of cards. I could just mentally picture all those santas and reindeers flying round and round aimlessly in snowy cyberspace as the airwaves struggled to cope. Progress ?? Good or bad ?? I wonder .. +++++++++ The MDC Prayer Dear Lord, We pray for your guidance in building a nation that abides by your word and guarantees the values of democracy, human rights and individual freedoms. Appropriately enough, Rossini began work on the opera on Christmas Day 1816 and, if not as well known as The Barber of Seville, it is in no way inferior - and this is a marvellous performance with Cecilia Bartoli in the title role. The production is a traditional one with evocative sets and delightful costumes whilst it's hard to imagine the music being better done. Thank you everyone for your support. +++++++ Raspberries to a certain auction centre, you know who you are. This is my story: I hunted for ages to take my little beloved car to a reputable place to sell on my behalf. I did my homework. I decided after much consideration to take it to a certain auction centre. They told me it could stay there as long as it needed and they would sell it. To my disbelief, my car was hidden away like a blemish on someone's backside. They NEVER displayed it. They had the cheek to say "if people don't ask, we don't show". I ask you - how are people supposed to ask if they don't KNOW about it or SEE it?! After 6 auctions (3 weeks) (of non-viewing) I called to see the progress and was asked to remove my car. The offer was less than half I expected. I asked to be given a few days to remove it and they agreed, only for someone to call the next day and demand it be removed or I pay storage of US20 a day! Before I had even managed to organise a way to get it out, they removed it from their premises, dumped it in the alleyway (awaiting refuse collection) and shut their gate, I wasn't even aware they had done that. Really people. When did we become so hard-hearted. Are all the auction houses the same? We are the clients and shouldn't have to be pushed around like dirt - like they are doing us favours. They are offering the community a service and should do so properly. Where would they be without our goods and money?? JD ++++++++ Another two beautiful trees fell over along Cecil Avenue last night (2.12.10). This has happened because the trenches that were dug along one side of the trees were far too close, causing root damage and destabilization of the trees. Trees that have taken years to grow are now falling like skittles. With the rains we have now lost three large trees in as many weeks, two in one night and all within a short distance from one another! Raspberries to the company who dug these cable trenches with little consideration to the environment that they were working in. Might they please consider trying to stabilize this avenue of trees before we lose any more? Angry Hillside Resident. ++++++++ 4) CONGRATULATIONS ++++++++ 5) CONDOLENCES CUMMINGS. Thanks and love from us all Gerald Old Miltonians' reunion in Perth As many may be aware, a reunion of Old Miltonians was held in Perth from 26 to 28 November. The event was initially planned as a 30th anniversary for the class of 1980, but thankfully many other OMs participated in this event, which enabled us all to meet up after many years of being scattered all over the globe. The weekend commenced on Friday 26th at 6.30 PM with a "boys' evening" at Emerald Park clubrooms. Approximately 35 OMs attended, and enjoyed a great evening, reminiscing about school days, and catching up on the past 30 years. After several rehearsals of trying to leave the venue which was booked until 11 p.m. the die-hards eventually left at about 2.15 when the last keg was empty. A cruise was organised from Hillarys Boat Harbour, and this departed late Saturday morning. The weather was calm which enabled a smooth and relaxing cruise, for the visitors to Perth. On the Saturday evening from 7 p.m. we all thoroughly enjoyed a 3 course dinner at Spinnakers Restaurant. Partners and spouses also partook in the festivities. Pete Hatton proved to be a great MC, starting off the evening with the traditional Latin grace, said with the appropriate speed of a true Milton boarder. After Paul Cutler welcomed everyone, Rory McKenzie gave an entertaining review of Milton in the 60s, followed by Steve McKenna's moving speech about what Milton stands for, and his time there in the 70s. Adrian Abel finished off the evening with a positive account of the changes of the 80s. On Sunday from 11.00 a.m. an open braai for Zimbabweans took place at Kings Park, a wonderful venue to finish off a great weekend of camaraderie and nostalgia It is incredible to think that Paul Cutler mooted the reunion about 2 years ago, and a week ago it actually happened. Thank you to Paul, Jane Gardiner, Pete Hatton, Steve Kerr and Gerald Keyer for their efforts in organising the reunion, and to Lindsay Gardiner who captured most of the photographs, and Nelson Pollard who organised the banners and beer mugs. A huge thank you to all those from outside Perth who attended, particularly those from outside Western Australia. Attendees from outside Australia travelled from France, Singapore and Durban. We treasure and remember Milton High School and the community, which remains close to our hearts. For all of us it was a truly memorable event and we all look forward to the next reunion wherever and whenever that may be. ++++++ Good afternoon. I recently bought a 2nd hand cookery book featuring Wooty. I recalled how much I enjoyed his TV programmes and how much inspiration I drew from him. I wondered whatever became of him. I lived in Bulawayo circa 60's and 70's while serving in the police, so found the newsletter very interesting indeed.
