OLD HABITS DIE HARD

THIS NEW FANGLED DISHWASHER THINGY

HeeHoo bought me a dishwasher the other day. Possibly long overdue, but the last time he was despatched with his partner in crime, HeeHoo Must Fish, to buy a dishwasher, they came home with a flat screen television !!

Anyhow, many months later, a brand spanking new dishwasher arrived and it was suitably installed with the lid opening right in front of the garage door, so one has to be ultra careful when opening the door, one's timing had to be perfect !!

Now these things are frightening, I have been in homes where dishwashers are treated with more respect than the family car.

Does one rinse the plates before putting them in the dish washer or does one not ?

Does one place the knives points up or points down ?

Does one run the cycle immediately or can one wait till the darn thing is full ?

Everyone has his or her fixed convictions on how a dishwasher should be loaded, and so I was advised, berated and abused verbally for some months by the dishwasher pundits.

Now to my economical mind, it has always been easy enough to rinse plates and cups etc as one uses them. Our family drinks the most tea and coffee in the world, and we would need a hundred tea and coffee cups or they would all end up in the dish washer.

This particular masterpiece of engineering does a "half load" but the book does not say if it washes a - the top half ? b- the bottom half ? c- if it is only half full ? d- or maybe if it is only half empty ???

(The manual must have been written by a man) mutter mutter.

And also to keep it running smoothly it will take up half of my house keeping budget. Instead of a monthly bottle of Sunlight dishwasher, I now use dish washing tablets, rinse aid, salt, finishing aid and so on and so forth.

And all that electricity ? It uses kilowatts galore to run, and my water bill has soared...... mutter mutter.

Now the family has insisted that I use this new toy and watches me beadily to see if I dare to transgress. They being first worlders, will not allow their third world mother to wash the dishes by hand any more. I guess they feel guilty if I sweat over the sink while they have their feet up in front of the Telly.

I tried to hide the dirty dishes in the cupboard until they went to bed but they caught me red handed. "Use the dish washer Mum" they shriek in gleeful chorus !!

I firmly believe though that they have missed something here. Surely their small motor skills will suffer if they have not had to dexterously try and get the grime out of a tea cup? What about ones triceps, should not one continue to work them by vigorously scrubbing those pans clean ?

The silly thing is, when one really needs the dish washer, when one has those giant fun filled dinner parties, the darn contraption is too small to take all the hundreds of dishes at any rate.

And another thing, plates and cups and saucers are a cinch to wash, what I need is a dish washer that will was those ugly grimy roasting pans and saucepans gummed up with the remnants of my famous cheese souffle !!

But no dish washer on this earth will get some of my pans clean ! I have some beauties that came up with Aunty Poppy in the ox wagon during the Rindepest. Not easy to get them clean at the best of times, it still takes a lot of huffing and puffing and super human manual elbow grease doesn't it ?

In fact a little bit of superhuman grime moving effort never did anyone any harm. Modern marriages might be made to last a lot longer if these young brides were made to get grips with some real hard labour ...

And as for HeeHoo's new birthday Reidel wine glasses, they are not allowed anywhere near the dishwasher but have to be lovingly hand washed and dried as if they were a brand new puppy !!

So all in all, this here dish washer, as far as I am concerned, is a bit of a White Elephant, give me the old fashioned way any day. On with the rubber gloves, turn up the mellows on the old steam radio, and sing to those dishes in the kitchen sink, its a whole lot easier and a lot more fun.

THE ART OF LIVING

To live life one needs tools, life skills and techniques. When we are down in the dumps, depressed or experiencing anger, how do we deal with these emotions. Nobody tells us how to handle our emotions, neither at home nor at school have we been taught how to deal with the upheavals in our lives. Here on the programme we show you how to uplift yourself and move on. Shake off the dust and remove the layers of dirt which prevent us from being happy and experiencing that innate peace and joy that life has to offer. So hurry and register now!!! Life is precious and too short to waste time on complaining and whining. Make the change you want in your life. You are the instrument that is directing the course of your future.. If you are miserable you will attract it, if you are peaceful, joyful and happy then everyone around you will experience it .The Art of Living presents the opportunity to remove the blocks and obstacles that prevent us growing, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

ZAMBEZI EXPRESS
has been nominated for an MTM:UK Award 2010 I am not sure if you have received this, or if you saw the show (which I am sure you did).

But, it was awesome, and this is such great news to see that they have been nominated.

Considering that they are from Byo, I was hoping you could send this through your Morning Mirror - urgently, to get as many of your readers, taking the time to vote for this amazing group. It would be awesome, for a Byo group, to win this, wouldn't it! So, please, if anyone can help reach more people, in the hope of more votes, you can. It only takes a few seconds to make the vote. Thanks you.
Please see the full list of nominated shows, click here http://www.musicaltheatrematters.org.uk/awards-nominations-201/ The winner will be announced at the Gala Award Show on Wednesday 25th August, 3:30pm at Pleasance Beyond. 20) Lifts Wanted And Offered

21) Seeking Friends

I saw an ad for DAVID THORPE in the Morning Mirror. I was wondering if he is the young brother to Cynthia Thorpe (and an older sister Lesley Thorpe) who attended Roosevelt Girls High way back in the sixties. I have been trying to trace Cynthia for some time. Could anyone who knows of Cynthia's whereabouts please contact me on betsyfulton@gmail.com? Maiden name White. Thank you in anticipation!

Now I must come clean and admit that I am writing to you to ask for help. I sadly have no relations - or even close associates - left in Zimbabwe and am desperately trying to find someone living in Harare who would be willing to help me obtain a copy of my son's birth certificate. He was born in Harare in 1962.

I am told by the Embassy in London that to get an urgent copy costs $10 (normally $5) and obviously I would be willing to recompense any kind person prepared to help this plus a further amount in appreciation of their time and effort. Or alternatively there may be something I could do here in the U.K. to help someone back home.

Sincerely

Frank Dobson Dobsonf@aol.com

English Lessons During August School Holidays:

I am an experienced and qualified teacher offering "O" and "A" level English lessons in Language and Literature during the August/September School holidays. Contact : Cynthia Taylor on 242321 for more information or to book a place.

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with O or A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help.

Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution. I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.

ZIMBABWE ELECTRICITY TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION COMPANY

HINTS ON SAVING ELECTRICITY

Electrical energy is the best. It is clean, safe, reliable, environmentally friendly and cost competitive.

The following hints which are not exhaustive may be of assistance in enhancing optimum utilization of your power supply:-
DOMESTIC CUSTOMERS
The major consuming appliances in the home are (a) water- heater (geyser) (b) stove.
1. It is important to ensure that the geyser thermostat is always functional and set about 65 degrees Celsius.
2. By reducing the amount of water in your bathtub, you save both water and electricity as the greater the volume of water drained from your geyser, the more the electrical energy you have to use up to heat the cold water replacing that being drained out.
3. The electrical stove must be kept in a good working order and in this state it can be switched off at least five minutes before the food is cooked and the store up heat will finish the cooking.
4. Light bulbs need not be more than 60 watts for normal house lighting and unoccupied rooms are better left unlit.
5. When using an electric kettle to boil water, it is advisable to boil only what is needed provided the element is covered.
6. It is quicker and cheaper to boil water in an electric kettle and then transfer the water into a cooking pot than boiling in the pot.
7. Avoid making toast under the grill and use a toaster if you have one.
8. there are different sizes of stove plates on most stoves and it is best to use small plates for small pots, in other words aim to match your pot and stove plate being used where possible.
9. Use cooking utensils with flat bottoms and make sure pots and pans have tight covers/lids which trap the heat within the utensils.
10. For those who can afford, pressure cookers and microwave ovens reduce the period of cooking considerably and hence reduce the consumption.
11. Fluorescent light fittings and various types of low power usage light bulbs now on the market may have an initial higher cost, but their much lower power consumption and longer life will give long term saving particularly on security lighting circuits.

INDUSTRIAL, COMMERCIAL, AGRICULTURE AND MINING OPERATIONS
Savings in your electricity bills can be achieved through a number of ways which include the following:
a) Ensure that machinery employed is efficient.
b) The power factor is kept at about 0.95 lag.
c) Operations yielding and high factor results in a lower electricity unit price when compared to low load factor.
d) Efficient light - fittings be installed in the premises.
e) We have plenty sunshine in Zimbabwe such that use of electric lighting during the day can be minimized in most premises.
f) Maximizing utilization of the available supply capacity reduce the unit-cost of production.
g) Educate staff on efficient energy utilization in your particular operation.
h) It is advisable to arrange for off-peak water heating wherever possible and enjoy the lower off-peak rates offered in the tariffs.
i) Good insulation of appliances such a cold rooms and ovens where these are in use, reduce losses due to inefficiency, thus reducing power consumption.

For the customers above 300kVA supply capacity, the same hints given for those below 300kVA still apply and the following are additional hints:-
1. The power factor and load factor in this case play more pronounced role in the direct reduction of the electricity bills if appropriate attention is paid to these parameters.
2. Capacitor Banks can be installed to compensate the inherent poop power factor associated with motors used in multi- complex office buildings, factories and industry. The level of the power factor has a direct relationship with the level of recorded maximum demand. There are organizations in industry who specialize in the field.
3. Where a group of electrical machines operate independent of each other, starting can be staggered to avoid the initial combined high demand of power during start-up.
4. the unit cost of production is directly related to utilization of the power supply. High demand peaks can be flattened by using less machinery and extend the production time to a two shift arrangement or more. In other words the closer the level of demand and energy consumed, the lower the unit cost.
5. Load Management must be given the appropriate status among the other management tools in enhancing good business practices.
6. The current tariff structure has an on-peak rate which is higher than the off-peak rate and therefore customers can benefit by shifting their power usage into the off-peak periods in particular where appropriate 2 rate meters are already in place. The peak period is between 0600 to 2100 hours daily and the off-peak is outside this period.

The Authority's staff in our Areas, Districts and Depots can provide more detailed and specific advise on matters of this nature an any other related issues to the supply and maximizing utilization of energy by all customer groupings.
