Gratitude

I have walked where no human feet have trod, and sat beside still waters.

I have worshipped, in a cathedral of tall trees, and thanked God!

I have listened to great orchestras, in the thundering waters of the Zambezi, and gentle arias, in its quieter places.

I have seen a splendid sable silhouetted against a Rhodesian sunset, and watched, a herd of elephants drinking in the vlei,

I have, prayed 'neath a star-studded sky, and thanked God!

I have heard, nostalgia in the cry of the fish eagle, as it winged across waters, and loneliness, in the wind, as it sighed through the acacias.

I have seen mists rising from the river in the glowing dawn, encircling pink-tinted spurwing geese, and gazed, at a distant, rising cloud of dust, from which emerged four hundred buffalo!

I have watched, the rains pour down, and the floods rise, and drop . . . the rains cease, far too long . . .Then once again Heaven-sent rain! Growth! Gladness!

All these privileges, I have known, and loved through the years, have become part of me, and also through the years, standing sentinel, our beloved Baobab!

But, changes come, and I am sad. But thank God, for what I've had . . .

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING
(Written by a former child)

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking I heard you say a prayer, and I knew there is a God I could always talk to and I learned to trust in God.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don't.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it and I learned we have to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't feel good and I learned that I would have To be responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared and I wanted to be everything that I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I learned most of life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked at you and wanted to say, "Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking."

WOZA MARCH FOR LOVE - FEBRUARY 14TH 2003

It was with great excitement that I joined the marchers outside the city hall.

I was going to march for justice and democracy
In support of the victimised, brutalised, homeless, the hungry
In support of those who can't speak for themselves
We were going to sing and pray for a better Zimbabwe for all of us
We were marching for love and peace

What I did not march for was being beaten by riot police
To be locked in a cell with twenty one other women in a space intended for seven
To spend a night in a flee / bug infested cell
To be interrogated, manhandled or maybe worse

I never claimed to be a hero
When I saw the riot police with their raised clubs I turned and walked the other way
Some of the ladies had children at home or businesses to run
Some of the ladies were marching instead of at work and could lose our jobs
Some of the ladies had gone there without telling anyone

To the two ladies who asked me  "Did you run away"
I would like to say that I participated in something I believe in
First  with joy, singing and  handing out flowers
Then in dismay with my heart thumping
And during all this mayhem

"Where were you. I didn't see either of you there?"

WHY NOT COME TO MABUKUWENE ALOE GARDENS?

With the problem of no fuel and often nothing much to do around here these days, why not come for a picnic or just a walk-around – to Mabukuwene Aloe Gardens?

Out on the Burnside Road, turn right at Chipping Way, then a little way down the road, on your right, you’ll find the big stone gate-posts marking the entrance to 15 acres of this ‘mini Matopos’!

The area is full of bird-life, aloes and cycads, indigenous trees, lovely interesting walks, and it’s Thomas Meikle’s resting place. Jane Meikle also has a remembrance plaque to the right of the gateway.

The area is owned by Meikles Trust and National Trust, and basically run by the Aloe Society.

There is a lovely thatched lookout, overlooking the city; which affords wonderful sunset views, then there’s the ‘Cottage’ which is a great entertainment area for summer or winter – rain or sun, with 2 braai places available.

Downstairs, there is the choice of 4 braais, or you can simply chose a flat area to ‘just sit!’ There are ablutions – one female and one male, which is why – and here’s the catch – we have to charge a minimal amount – for the water, and also for the upkeep of this wonderful area.

Charges are as follows:
The Upstairs Cottage: $800 non-returnable deposit – booking is essential here. $200 per hour for the area, up to 6 p.m. thereafter $300 per hour (up to 10 p.m. only). The $800 allows you $4 hours therefore.

Downstairs area: $100 per hour for groups of about 4 persons or more, and if you use a braai, it’s another $200 for the day’s use.

For bookings for the upstairs cottage, (you need not book for the rest of the area), phone Carol Warren AFTERNOONS ONLY! On 241689. The deposit is paid at Hillside Hardware.

So don’t forget, everyone! There IS a safe, near-by place to go to.

See you there!

CAROL WARREN (Secretary, Mabukuwene Aloe Gardens).

TIDBITS

Jimmy and Theresa McGroarty lived in Bulawayo for at least a hundred years and folk that knew them will be thrilled to hear that their "grandotter" - little Jodie McGroarty (daughter of Ethel and Jimmy McGroarty formerly of Harare ) has been included in the British Olympic diving team.

Its quite a thing as she is now entitled to all benefits from the British Olympic team fund, i.e. specialists, physios, transport, accommodation, sponsorship etc.

Originally they were told she was going to be in the junior Olympic development squad, but obviously this weekend she made the grade. Jodie was put up at a 4-star hotel.  She will be diving in Germany and Edinburgh in the next couple of months and then off to Canada.  She is the youngest diver in the team, she will only be 14 in May.

I will also make sure we have a wee dram to her good luck in the future.  Jim says that with the regimented diet she is on 'she has a figure that many girls would die for'.

Comments from Elaine McDonald

I am from Famona, Bulawayo, now living in Leicester, UK. Been here 3 yrs now; am still as homesick as I was when I first arrived, but gratefull to have escaped. My thoughts & prayers are with all my old friends around Bulawayo.........I am so sorry.

I given up my Zim citizenship...well put it this way, I realised there was no point paying £80 to try renew it when my old Mother, who is still in Byo has been refused a new passport....

So now I am going to be British....with my heart still in Africa...I am thankful and so very sad.
