FROM CATHY BUCKLE Dear Family and Friends, As Zimbabwe commemorates Heroes Day, the official remembrance is again dominated by a few. We hear nothing of heroes from other political parties; nothing of the thousands who have died in the last decade in the struggle for good governance, democracy and new leadership in our country. We hear nothing of the ordinary Zimbabweans who who are the real heroes in 2010. This letter is for them, heroes of the last decade. The heroes are mothers and grandmothers who managed to keep homes together and families alive when shops were empty and there was no food to buy. Women who went to bed hungry, made meals from nothing and kept hope alive. The heroes are our children who lost their childhood in the mayhem of ten years of political violence. Children who watched their families being torn apart as parents, siblings, aunts and uncles fled to the Diaspora to escape and to survive. Children who sat helpless, hopeless outside closed schools. Children who lost ten years of education and as a result are without qualifications and jobs. The heroes are people in rural villages who have borne the brunt of political intimidation, harassment and violence. Knowing their every move is watched and recorded. Knowing that if their name is not on the "good" list of the village leaders they will not get food, seed, fertilizer. People who continue to endure the most primitive of conditions in homes which are still without piped water, plumbing or electricity 30 years after Independence. The heroes are the professionals: doctors, nurses, teachers, and so many more who have held their heads high, worked in the most appalling circumstances for minuscule wages, determined to keep giving of their skills which have held Zimbabwe together. The heroes are the ordinary workers who have toiled for the smallest of wages, wearing threadbare clothes, walking miles to work, struggling through endless power cuts, going for days, weeks and months without water and coping with years of not having garbage collected. The heroes are the activists who have lost everything, and given everything, to bring freedom for us all. Activists who are not in this massive government we are groaning under; activists who are not driving government cars and earning government allowances but ordinary men and women who are brave, determined, driven. The heroes are the countless men and women who have worked tirelessly from outside our borders. People who have given 10 years of their lives to exposing events in Zimbabwe, speaking out, lobbying governments, raising money for people in trouble, giving support, encouragement and hope. Happy Heroes Day to all of us, whatever our race, colour, creed or political persuasion. Until next time, thanks for reading, love cathy. ++++++++ 2) NOTICES AND EVENTS Art exhibitions : - The National Gallery of Zimbabwe and Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo invite you to the official opening of the exhibition "Watercolour Agenda" an exhibition of watercolour paintings by Nyasha Bandama 5.30pm, Thursday 26 August 2010 at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo (corner Main Street and Leopold Takawira Ave, Bulawayo) - The National Gallery of Zimbabwe and Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo invite you to the official opening of the exhibition "The incredible discovery of Professor T. WRIGHTS NURSERY NEWS LETTER 1/08 WHAT TO DO IN AUGUST The soil is still very cold and not much growth can be expected until the minimum ground temperatures get up to 15oC+. Lawn work can now get underway and you can finish off scarifying and hard mowing your lawn. You can also apply your Single Super Phosphate ( SSP) and then do your initial application of Comp D. Fertilizer generally takes 2-3 weeks before the roots start to pick up the nutrients. As the weather warms up you will need to start increasing your watering routine and it is well worth giving your fruit trees and roses a deep soaking as they are probably a bit dry from the winter waterings. Now is a good time to give your pot plants an annual service. Clean them up and cut off any superfluous growth. Make up a mix of compost and fertilizer and fill up the pot. If the plant has settled down too deep in the pot you can lift the plant out and also put the mix into the bottom of the pot. Prepare your beds for your summer plantings ie dig the soil with a pick to loosen up the soil. Add your fertilizer and compost and then rake out the bed. Soak and then leave for a week or so before planting. You should finish your rose pruning soon but you may still have to wait until your Deciduous fruit trees finish flowering before pruning them. Citrus, mango and avocado trees also benefit from some judicious pruning and you can remove dead and diseased growth. Now is the right time to feed your fruit trees to ensure that you get a good crop of nice fruit. For an averaged size tree you should apply 2-5 kgs of SSP and 2-5 kgs of Comp D or J. This should be well soaked in and you can then apply a mulch on top of the " drip zone. Follow this up with 1-2 kgs of Ammonium Nitrate every 2 months there after ie Oct, Jan and Apr. Irises can be fed with a General fertilizer as well as being given a dressing of Lime. You can clean out all your gutters as they are sure to be full of leaves. Your Poinsettias will probably be over their flowering and can be cut back to encourage flowering for next season. WHAT TO PLANT The following flower seeds could go in now : Alyssum, asters, cosmos, dahlias, gaillardia, marigolds, salvia, verbena and snap dragons. The following veggie seed can go in : beans, tomato, squash, lettuce, beet root and radish. SUNDAY OPENING If the weather warms up we will be re-opening on Sundays at Hillside from 9 - 12. Margot +++++++++ LODGE IN MAKHADO I would like to bring to attention to travelers who use a certain lodge in Makhado as their stop to and from Zimbabwe. (Name can be supplied on application) My husband and I were booked at the Lodge for two nights over the long weekend of 9 and 10 August. On the first day, upon returning from the shops the room we were allocated had been cleaned. On opening our bag, even though the lock was still intact, we found the bag had been tampered with and most of our money that was in the bag was missing. As we checked through our other luggage, my necklace (of sentimental value) was also missing from the toiletry bag (which had been safely stored away in the cupboard). All our other bags including shopping bags had also been tampered with. We reported the theft to Reception, but it seems they were reluctant to involve the Police, in spite of the lady behind the counter admitting to the fact that that particular maid who cleaned our room had been involved in previous episodes of theft from the Lodge. Eventually the police were called in and a statement was taken, but the next morning as we checked out, we enquired about the cleaning maid and were told that she was at work as per normal and no action had been taken from the Personnel at the Lodge! For anyone who uses a lodge in Makhado, please be warned to take extra care of all your valuables and personal belongings as even a locked bag may not prevent you from being robbed by the staff while you are out of your room. Lodge name will be supplied if you e mail tdsec@triangle.co.zw ++++++++ 10) PERSONAL COLUMN CONSULAR SECTION - BRITISH EMBASSY We will be coming down to Bulawayo on the 31st August and will be at 'The Berry' (22 Haddon Avenue,Kumalo) from 13.00pm till 5.00pm and then on 1st September from 9.00am-11.30am Please be advised that this is only for consular matters, we will not be dealing with visas. +++++++++ BOTSWANA ALERT I was headed to bots last Friday (6th aug) and with two drivers in the car I decided to take the bots side of the border. obeying all the ridiculous speed limits we were still stopped at the main road block. the officer asked to see my license which I showed him to which he told me to pull over. this is my first time driving in bots so I do as he says and pull over.he then tells me that I have an invalid drivers license. ( the blue form you are given at vid when you take your test) and after long arguments our options were : pay P500 fine or leave our car there and get a court appearance .. this is 25km out of town. we end up having to pay the fine. the officers would listen to no reasoning on our behalf and had apparently already had 6 cases like ours in that morning. it was only 12.00am. im not saying that the officers are wrong or right as im not sure of the law in that context but I would like to warn any unsuspecting drivers without the metal license disc as that is all they recognize and all they will accept. thanks ..hope this helps someone and saves them P500 +++++++++ 11) GWERU AND HARARE NEWS ++++++++ 12) WINING AND DINING Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo & The Bulawayo Club present an Evening of Fine French Cuisine. $25.00 per person including a five course dinner. GOOD VISION IN A DOWNPOUR How to achieve good vision while driving during a heavy downpour. We are not sure why it is so effective; just try this method when it rains heavily. This method was told by a Police friend who had experienced and confirmed it. It is useful...even driving at night. Most of the motorists would turn on HIGH or FASTEST SPEED of the wipers during heavy downpour, yet the visibility in front of the windshield is still bad...... In the event you face such a situation, just put on your SUN GLASSES (any model will do), and miracle! All of a sudden, your visibility in front of your windshield is perfectly clear, as if there is no rain. Make sure you always have a pair of SUN GLASSES in your car. You are not only helping yourself to drive safely with good vision, but also might save your friend's life by giving him this idea.. Try it yourself and share it with your friends!??? Amazing, you still see the drops on the windshield, but not the sheet of rain falling.? You can see where the rain bounces off the road. It works to eliminate the "blindness" from passing cars. Or the "kickup" if you are following a car in the rain. They ought to teach this little tip in driver's training.. It really does work. This is a good warning. I wonder how many people knew about this. Another good tip: A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago. She was traveling between Gladewater & Kilgore. It was raining, though not excessively and her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence! When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened. He told her something that every driver should know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON . She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain.. But the highway patrolman told her that if the cruise control is on, your car will begin to hydro-plane when the tires lose contact with the pavement, and your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane. She told the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred. The patrolman said this warning should be listed, on the driver's seat sun-visor - NEVER USETHE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY , along with the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed - but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry. The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries. NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on. Even if you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about this, its still worthy. You might have saved a life. +++++ The content that is published in Morning Mirror does not necessarily reflect the editor's opinion.
