The Great Dane and the Forklift

Anyone who has owned a Great Dane will have empathy with my little tale of woe.

We have an elderly, most regal Great Dane of majestic proportions, with a heart the size of a lion and a gentle dignity second to none.

Her name is Victoria Jane and she is a legend in the neighborhood, as was her brother Winston who died some years ago.

Victoria is a lady, for although she stands hip high, she barks like a lady, walks like a model on a ramp, and eats in a dainty ladylike fashion. But sadly time has taken its toll and the Dear Old Grand Dame has mislaid her potty training rules.

We love her far too much to do anything except understand, after all, are we not going to be old too one day ?

But recently she came close to being my very "unfavourite dog".

Now Great Danes are not outside dogs, anyone will tell you that. They are couch dogs, double bed dogs, indeed Victoria has her own double bed mattress that gets parked all over the house .... anywhere that mother is, Victoria likes to have her foam bed close by.

It is not an onerous chore, its quite light, and she is near the end of her days, and so where mother goes, goes the bed ....

In the morning it is a ritual, Victoria stands outside the bedroom french doors awaiting entry for morning tea.... those great dark Great Dane eyes staring longingly at our unkempt bed.

Eventually either HeeHoo or I relent and let her in but we sincerely hope that she has done her morning ablutions before she enters the house !!

Sadly she has forgotten the doggy toilet rules and we have the odd "accident" but she is a dignified old lady and knows that its not the done thing, but her mind and her body seem aloof from each other these days.

And so I found her, in that typical Great Dane ungainly position, squatting over the only Persian carpet in the house !! I did not dare move, I was frozen in horror as only a Great Dane owner will understand.

She caught sight of me out of the corner of her Great Dane eye, and that Great Dane Brain registered disbelief that she was actually being a bad girl indoors. And so she hopped, in a most indelicate fashion, dropping great dollops of dane doggy doodoo detritus from the one end of the Persian to the other !!

Now a pooper scooper, as Great Dane lovers well know, is no use for a dog this size. One needs a forklift !!

I thought I was remarkably restrained in my language, she is after all a most sensitive creature and was mortified at her wrong doing.

I gently let her out into the garden, google mapping the deposits which were well blended into the jewel colours of the carpet. She had done her darndest to make it as awkward a clean up operation as she could.

It was a gargantuan task, a task I did with gritted teeth, loving that proud old girl, and hating old age.

Was Man made to love a dog this much ??

Sadly a week after I wrote this tale, our beloved Vickie drew her last breath.

She had dedicated 12 wonderful years of enormous love and gentle protection to our little family, and from this we have learnt there is, after all, no greater love.

2) Notices and Event

*Africa*

Within my soul, within my mind,
There lies a place I cannot find.
Home of my heart. Land of my birth.
Smoke-coloured stone and flame-coloured earth.
Electric skies. Shivering heat.
Blood-red clay beneath my feet.

At night when finally alone,
I close my eyes - and I am home.
I kneel and touch the blood-warm sand
And feel the pulse beneath my hand
Of an ancient life too old to name,
In an ancient land too wild to tame.

How can I show you what I feel?
How can I make this essence real?
I search for words in dumb frustration
To try and form some explanation,
But how can heart and soul be caught
In one-dimensional written thought?

If love and longing are a "fire"
And Man "consumed" by his desire,
Then this love is no simple flame
That mortal thought can hold or tame.
As deep within the earth's own core
The love of home burns evermore.

But what is home? I hear them say,
This never was yours anyway.
You have no birthright to this place,
Descendant from another race.
An immigrant? A pioneer?
You are no longer welcome here.

Whoever said that love made sense?
"I love" is an "imperfect" tense.
To love in vain has been Man's fate
From history to present date.
I have no grounds for dispensation,
I know I have no home or Nation.

For just one moment in the night
I am complete, my soul takes flight.
For just one moment. then it's gone
And I am once again undone.
Never complete. Never whole.
White skin and an African soul

Don't know if you have heard about our own Bulawayo website........and also the reunion we are having in September 2010 in JHB.

Click on the link below and read about how it all came together........read the newsletters, see the photo gallery, read the guestbook, blogs and forums........and check out the 440+ members from all over SA and the world, who have already registered.........many with their photos and family news, and many of whom will be coming to the reunion in September.

The webmaster has said that he won't be taking the website down after the reunion so it will remain as a source of reference for ex-Bulawayo-ites. So please register.....and hopefully come and join the Bulawayo family in JHB on 25th September 2010! It's going to be a real BLAST!
http://bulawayo1950.webs.com/
The site is sometimes a little "fussy" about loading, but keep clicking on the link until it comes up. OK......enjoy catching up with your childhood friends!
IMPORTANT......if you intend coming to the reunion, it is essential that you register, and in full please, and as soon as possible. We need to be able to email you with any important notices and necessary deadlines.
In order to accommodate everyone, and to provide adequate bar and catering, we will need to know numbers attending, and only if you have registered, are we able to reach you in the following months to ask you for this information, and for your commitment. If you just pitch on the evening, we will not have catered in any way for you......and that will be unfair to all. So please register now....and assist us with the smooth-running of this very special event. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Regards
Jenny Welch (nee Green)

What is the Art Of Living?
The Art of Living Course is a practical course of experience and knowledge designed to develop the full potential of life. Enjoyed by people of all backgrounds and traditions, the course is based on the ancient knowledge of the art of living and the healing power of the breath, adapted to the needs of modern life. It offers practical tools to eliminate stress and awaken our innate potential to heal ourselves. The techniques and tools learned bring greater peace, energy, awareness, and joy to daily life.

The Mind Quality and success in life are determined by the state of our mind. Under stress and pressure, the mind often vacillates between regretting the past and worrying about the future. This constant vacillation results in lower performance, lack of concentration, decreased efficiency, and more interpersonal conflicts. The Art of Living Course empowers individuals to be more centered and focused, by providing them with powerful tools that enable them to function more fully in the present moment.

The Breath The breath has proven to be a powerful tool in effectively regulating the mind, and can be very effective in eliminating stresses and toxins from the system. It has a profound effect on how we feel emotionally and physically, and on the state of our mind. Over 80% of the physical and emotional toxins in the body are eliminated through the breath, yet most people use only 35% of their lung capacity. Skillful use of the breath can effortlessly transform one's mental and emotional state and significantly improve the overall quality of life.

The Benefits 0 Reduced Stress 0 Increased health & well being 0 More ease & joy in relationships 0 Improved self- esteem 0 Greater creativity 0 Peace of mind 0 Alertness & clarity of mind

Looking for a publisher angel of mercy.

Lameck Kasuku is no ordinary man. Lameck was injured in a rugby accident in Bulawayo Zimbabwe in August 1990.

For twenty years Lameck has lived at Bartley memorial Block Hospital. A total quadriplegic, Lameck spends his long days in a wheelchair and his long nights confined to a bed in a geriatric government nursing home.

The rugby fraternity in Bulawayo has been incredible. They bring him tapes of current sports matches, they have provided him with a Tv and a video recorder. And they have encouraged his writings. Lameck has the partial use of one hand. And so twenty years after his awful ordeal, his book needs to be published.
A book about his life, his thoughts, his goals his dreams. Can you make his dream and arrange to have Lameck's book published ?

Please note there is a rather clever con man working in Bulawayo, he came into our shop looking for printer cartridges,we quoted him a price which was agreed upon. He contacted us on various occasions during the week to finalise the deal.He claimed that he was purchasing on behalf of United Bulawayo Hospitals and would return with the cash payment on Friday.
He duly arrived at the shop but did not have the cash and asked my husband to take him to his office to collect the cash, which he agreed to do. On the way he asked to stop at the Old Mutual to drop a cartridge with a friend as he had to borrow one, of course he disappeared with the goods never to be seen again!! He is a very well dressed and well spoken man in his late twenties early thirties. Please do not let yourselves be conned by him. We have notified the relevant hospitals that he is using them in his cons. We are also advising C.I.D.

Hope this will prevent any one else being conned by him.In our case he was going under the name of MR.Moyo.

The late John Osborne (he died last year) was a wonderful writer about wildlife experiences in Zimbabwe. As a young man he was with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management in the former Rhodesia, stationed at Chipinda Pools in the State Land of the Gona-re-Zhou. He wrote "A Guiding Son" and "A Ranging Son," the latter being the one especially featuring his efforts in the Gona-re-Zhou, and to quote from the back cover, "Thus began his battle with poachers, vagabonds and interlopers, and like strewn pieces of a large jigsaw puzzle, a picture took shape. Assisted by the elephants, he was instrumental in creating Rhodesia's second biggest game reserve, the Gona-re-Zhou (Place of the Elephants)."

"In the Shadow of the Baobab," was printed in 2007, and the description at the back of the book says, "Legend has it that anyone who takes refuge in the shadow of a baobab is likely to be hooked by Africa and reclassified as a little bit mad. John Osborne has dedicated this book to the many bush happy people who have rested in its shade and been enslaved by the curious fascination of Africa, its ways and its people. Just as the mighty baobab stands out, colourful in its twisted glory, a monument of interest and intrigue in the African bush, so do the lives of the eccentric misfits and nonconformists who, unlike the many 'no face' people of this world, are remembered and seldom forgotten.

"Seeing the funny side of life, John Osborne has recorded, with his easy entertaining style, encounters with the odd, unconventional and outright bizarre. He masterfully captures the humour, drama, tension, tragedy, intrigue, excitement and fear of Africa."

The most recent book "African Son Dial," printed in 2009, is described on the back as follows: "Anyone who knows anything about Rhodesia will enjoy and identify with this poignant and evocative collection of stories about growing up there. These memories are seen through the eyes of a boy and his siblings running free in the sprawling suburbs of post-war Salisbury, then as an adolescent at a leading boys' school and later as a young man in the British South Africa Police.

"John Osborne is the consummate story teller and his observations are always spiced with large doses of humour. It is not a book about the politics of this country but a story about a way of life. Privileged - undoubtedly, but it reveals the psyche of the white tribe who went on to make Rhodesia the great country that it was. 'African Son Dial' is the fourth in this series of books and, along with its siblings, will undoubtedly become part of the essential Rhodesiana collection."

I have copies of the last three mentioned books ("A Ranging Son", "In the Shadow of the Baobab" and "African Son Dial") which are priced at U.S. $25 each. The postage for each book via media mail is roughly $2.80. All three books together cost $3.55 to mail. For anyone in the U.K. who's interested, I'll be coming to England later this summer and can bring books with me then.

For anyone who might be interested, please let me know, Margo Rees, africawind@edcomember.net, 928-12th Street North, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, 32250, telephone 904 249 0654.

CHIMANIMANI ARTS FESTIVAL

Chimanimani Arts Festival (21-23 May)
The annual Chimanimani Arts Festival will take place during the weekend 21-23 May. The free-entry festival regularly features Zimbabwe's best-known artists and performers, while this year's festival welcomes Barcelona-based Spanish street performers Pa lo Q'Sea who will use mythology, tradition, ritual elements and legends to realize a contemporary 'Fiesta" featuring recyclable large puppets, stilt-walkers, unicyclists, jugglers, drummers and acrobats on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Pa lo Q'Sea ('For whatever it's needed) was founded in 1989. Their most popular production "Rompe Candela" has been presented at more than 300 venues worldwide including Canada, Colombia, Australia, New Caledonia, and throughout Europe. The 3-member group will spend 2 weeks working with Harare acrobatic troupe ZimZam, Mutare based tumblers Aqua and local Chimanimani talents to present a new version of 'Rompe Candela' (Break the Fire) at the Chimanimani Festival for this fiesta spectacular The festival opens on Friday 21 May with a cultural exposition in celebration of International Day for Cultural Diversity and Development during which Zimbabwean culture will be on prominent display; and continues throughout the weekend with a program of music, theatre, film, poetry, comedy, dance and workshops.
Feature acts include Suluman Chimbetu, Andy Brown, Outspoken, Makoomba, Junior Bantan and Edgar Langevelt plus groups from the Flame, Bocapa and Music Crossroads talent networks and Mutare and Chimanimani based groups. There will be a special guest appearance by 'Tuku' alongside the Ay Band in tribute to his son Sam Mtukudzi; whose recent loss has deprived everyone of a sparkling gem of a talent. Arts and craft stalls and local foodstuffs will be available at outlets in and around the main-stage venue which is located on the village green.
Chimanimani is a tourist attraction, and surrounding places of interest include Tessa's Pools and Bridal Veil Falls, whilst Chimanimani also offers some of the best one- day and overnight mountain walking anywhere in the world. The full programme, as well as information on previous festivals and more general info about Chimanimani, can be found on the website http://www.chimanimani.com with ongoing updates as the festival approaches.

"I am looking for a well groomed, clean, honest, dedicated nanny/maid for my home and my 2 kids - they are 1 and 2 years old. I'm looking for someone who will love them, and really be a part of the family. It must be a lady who is less interested in a 9-5 job, and more interested in helping me bring up my children lovingly - the old school kind of nanny. In exchange, I will look after her very well, and will accommodate her and pay a good salary if she is the right person. I'm in no hurry, so will take time to choose the best 'gogo' for my family and my kids. FACTORY REGISTRATION CERTIFICATES - NSSA
We have been advised by Members that NSSA Factory Inspectors have been visiting them and insisting that they renew their Factory Certificate, failure to do so will incur penalties and prosecution. They are also demanding exorbitant fees thereon. ABUZ has sought legal advice and it has been confirmed by our Lawyers and in line with current legislation that such action is deemed to be unlawful. It is in their opinion that Certificates should not be renewed on Annual basis as is currently demanded by both their Inspectors and newspaper adverts highlighted on a regular basis.

BOREHOLE LICENSING PERMIT - GWAYI UPPER CATCHMENT COUNCIL
Some of our Members have been fined and pursued by this organization insisting that all boreholes require a permit for which there is an exorbitant fee thereon. It would seem that this might be demanded on an Annual basis. ABUZ has again sought Legal advice on this issue, and it would seem from such advice that Companies that had a borehole prior a certain date would claim in line with legislation, that they indeed have a permit.

EMF ENGINEERING MEDICAL FUND
Member Companies involved in Engineering would be advised that all their workers ranging from A1 upwards are required to be compulsory Members of this Medical Fund. We have again sought Legal advice on this issue and it would seem from such advices, that the EMF is acting ultra vires the appropriate legislation.

These three matters are going to be deliberated on at a Members Meeting on Tuesday 11 May 2010 at 5:00pm to decide the way forward. ASSOCIATION FOR BUSINESS IN ZIMBABWE-ABUZ 7 May 2010

We advise that the Reserve Bank of South Africa is withdrawing some old series of ZAR200 notes. These will be withdrawn by 31.05.10. Thereafter only the Reserve Bank of South Africa will accept these notes.

We attach a detailed statement by the Governor of the South African Reserve Bank for your information..

010-04-21: Statement issued by the SARB Governor, Ms G Marcus on counterfeit notes in circulation

The South African Reserve Bank (the 'Bank') has noted with concern that relatively high quality counterfeit notes of the old series, that does not have the security features as listed below, have illegally come into circulation. This matter is currently under investigation.
We also advise that the Bank, together with the commercial banks, is withdrawing all old series R200 banknotes that remain in circulation. Members of the public are requested to present these banknotes for exchange at the nearest commercial bank by the end of May 2010. After this date it will only be possible to present these banknotes to the South African Reserve Bank Branches for exchange.
The R200 banknotes of the upgraded series bearing the signatures of former Governor, Mr T T Mboweni and current Governor, Ms G Marcus have the security features outlined below and are not affected by the current counterfeit problem. These banknotes will remain in circulation.
South Africa has a family of five banknotes, with the R200 banknote being the highest denomination. The South African public is encouraged to re-familiarise themselves with the security features on the South African banknotes and to examine them on receipt. Do not hesitate or feel embarrassed about holding a banknote up to the light. Look, feel and tilt the banknotes to ascertain the security features.

Some key features to consider:
Banknote Substrate
The special quality of banknote paper and the raised intaglio print give it a distinct feel. Unlike normal paper, banknotes have a distinct crackling sound when handled.
Coat of Arms
The South African Coat of Arms is used prominently in the front top left corner, in the iridescent band on the back, and as a holographic image in the security thread of the R50, R100 and R200 banknotes.
Watermark
The watermark is smaller and the denomination numeral is added to the watermark of the main motif. When the banknote is held up to the light the watermark and the denomination numeral are visible.
Perfect registration
The upgraded banknotes reveal the denomination numeral in perfect registration on the front and back when a note is held up to the light. It does not appear blurred or obscured.
Windowed security thread
On the R50, R100 and R200 banknotes the thread is 4mm wide. SARB, RAND and the denomination numeral appear when held up to light and a holographic Coat of Arms appears in the thread when tilted. On the R10 and R20 banknotes the thread is 2mm wide and SARB and the denomination numeral appear in clear text.
Optically variable ink
On the R50, R100 and R200 banknotes the denomination numeral on the front bottom right is printed in colour changing ink. When the R50 and R100 banknotes are tilted, the colour changes from green to gold. On the R200 it changes from magenta to green
Latent image
When the banknote is held almost horizontally to eye level, the denomination numeral appears inside the geometric shapes.
Diamond shapes
The diamond shapes with a raised intaglio feel on the front of the banknote that assist the blind to distinguish between the denominations are as follows: 1 diamond for the R10, 2 diamonds for the R20, 3 diamonds for the R50, 4 diamonds for the R100, and 5 diamonds for the R200.
Different geometric shapes
These are on the front of the banknotes as an aid for the partially sighted and are as follows: diamond on the R10, square on the R20, circle on the R50,and different hexagons on the R100 and R200 respectively.
Denomination numerals
These are prominent on the front and the back of the banknotes.
Microlettering
'South African Reserve Bank' appears in microlettering to the right of the animal's ear. The microlettering is printed in positive and negative text.
Unique numbering
The unique number is on the back - a vertical number on the left hand side and a horizontal number top right. The horizontal number is conical.
Iridescent band
This is a very prominent feature, in gold colour on the back of all banknotes. When tilted, the Coat of Arms and the denomination numeral appear.
Should any member of the public not be certain of the authenticity and quality of a banknote they have the right to request one that they have trust/confidence in.
Members of the public who require further information can contact: Samantha Henkeman Tel: +27 12 313 4669 Email: sam.henkeman@resbank.co.za
