It all began when We Girls decided to go out to dinner last Friday night. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but little did we know that The Boys had other ideas. It was after all, unbeknownst to us, the Stormers vs Crusaders Super 14 Rugby Game !! A fairly important match they told us in hindsight but being blond we were unaware of any overtones, undertones, anguished feelings or whatever.... To dine, or not to dine ? (it's almost Mothers" Day after all ) we claimed, and those poor benighted boys acquiesced and took us to dinner, reluctantly, we almost had to drag them literally, but we put it down to a long day at the office and not much else. We should have had some glimmer of warning, when the first shout was heard from the pub below the restaurant. It was a sound unequalled by any other, and it should have rung loud and distinct warning bells. At first I thought it was a hold up, that noise could only emanate from some mortally wounded soul ....... but I was informed from between clenched teeth that it was a try scored by the Crusaders. However we were engaged in useful and "intelligent " conversation at this stage and so we chose to ignore the throaty cries and concentrate diligently on our men as Mother had coached us so many years ago. The manner of the Boys was unusual, they were fidgety, scratchy, distracted, the usual "Guy" syndrome, and so we ignored them and continued our "we must have a loving, caring, Doctor Phil Friday night supper". It is after all, important to bond with one's Spouse on a regular basis, all the books say so !! Deep, meaningful conversation should have been the order of the day ! The second, ebullient, unified scream of jubilation from the Pub below the restaurant, was less easy to gloss over, it was impinging on our enjoyment just a trifle, but we looked around and saw no overt reason to worry, no heists, no hold ups, no gang warfare ? And so we continued to entertain our Men as best we knew how with our light frivolous and entertaining conversation, which Mother assured us, would have our Men lapping out of hands forever and a day..... We were in the middle of a brilliant and entrancing dissertation on the Great Debate between Cameron, Clegg and Brown, when we heard loudly and clearly, another gigantic moan, nay a unified groan of significance, from downstairs. It was rather akin to the groan which must have accompanied the sinking of the Lusitania, when we Girls realised we were against a force rather more significant than we had first imagined. No, we were not facing an attack on our marriages by some Nubile Young Scantily Clad Vamps, nor indeed some ordinary nuclear incident, our evening was under threat from a Rugby game wherein the South African Stormers were playing the New Zealand Crusaders in one of the vitally important Super Fourteen Games of all Games !! We had thought smugly that the Boys were holding their breath in awe at our intellectually superb conversation.... or perhaps it was the spicy curry that was mesmerizing them ? No indeed the Rats were inhaling the ambiance and atmosphere from the pub underneath the restaurant, and were aurally "Ball by Balling" along with their fellow compatriots one story below us. Fie upon you !! Your hoodwinked us most ungallantly...... our magical Friday Night Out With The Boys, turned into an inordinate gallop home as we were shoveled unceremoniously into bed while the Boys went to watch the GAME they were recording on the Telly !! +++++ 2) NOTICES ROCK YOUR SOCKS OFF Sat 29th May 2010 at HOTEL RIO Tickets US$25 for dinner and rock 'n roll. Our membership presently stands at approximately +/-20. As a social based club, we are unable to raise the funding necessary for us to purchase the requisite equipment for our needs and have had to rely on dilapidated dartboards and dart sets(arrows) inherited from well-wishers. We therefor, kindly request your organisation's good indulgence to source for us any of the equipment referred to above(in whatever form, but useable, of course!) which some Good Samaritans somewhere/anywhere may be wishing to donate. I am seeking photos of the MOTH Shrine in the Matopos, (in Digital form, of course), and would be very grateful if you could put out this request on your Site. In similar vein, I would very much like to receive pictures of the Cenotaph in Main Street, Bulawayo. Purely from a historical interest, I also seek photos of the Queens Hotel, the one on the way to Turk Mine, a short way past the Bulawayo airport turn-off; and of the Rochester Hotel, (as I recall on the way to Nyamandhlovu ?); both these establishments must surely have long passed into history... From: Tony Munnik +++++++++++++ NEWSLETTER Hillside Dams Conservancy held an open meeting at the Boma which was attended by 52 Friends of Hillside Dams including representatives of the Hillside Police Station and Neighbourhood Watch. The discussion reviewed the great progress made to date in improving the Conservancy and thanks were given to Rob Burrett and the te velde family in particular, for the amazing progress evident on the ground. It was requested that the word be spread to encourage those with the time and staff to join them every Wednesday from 8am to continue the clean up. It was agreed that this not only improved the conservancy but it also helps enormously with the security. A presentation was awarded to Melusi Ncube, our tireless estate manager on the ground, who never gave up, and after plenty of sleepless nights managed to apprehend the mugger/thief who has caused such alarm recently. This has subsequently led to other arrests and the Hillside Police are commended for their work in this regard. Mark Berger of Tesa Palisade Company introduced his fencing product - which is a permanent galvanized product that is unlikely to be stolen or breached. Garden Park has just installed it. Everyone agreed to promote the installation of this product on the North (main) entrance boundary and eastern side between neighbours walls and fences. It is hoped that this will help control access, and therefore improve security. A controlled entry point will be put on the eastern side. Donations are being sought for the fencing and on the night close to 70 running metres were pledged. This is a terrific start and we thank Mark for his support and great price! Lee Nesbitt spoke about our website and newsletter and asked for feedback and stories, including photographs to be sent to her. It is also planned to use the site to generate support for the fencing project. Please contact the following for further details or pop by the office should you be able to help or have any thoughts on our project. estate@hillsidedams.com Telephone: 242490 - office www.hillsidedams.com All donations will be receipted and acknowledged Many thanks! ++++++++ With winter around the corner does anyone know of a chimney sweeper please, Grecian Art grecianart@zol.co.zw +++++ BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION MAY 2010 NEWSLETTER Dear Member We hope that Trade Fair did bring you some business - we know that the hospitality industry, i.e. Accommodation, restaurants, and related industries did benefit. The Bulawayo Publicity Association was inundated with calls from people from Botswana, Harare and South Africa seeking accommodation. The Association is pleased with the number of tourists who have come into the offices recently, and as the offices were the first port of call for information, it again emphasizes the importance of the Association's role in the city. The Association's secretary who spent a few days at the Falls over the Independence weekend, said that the Victoria Falls Rest Camp had many visitors staying there from all parts of the world and who informed Miss Kennedy that they intended to make their way to Bulawayo. Miss Kennedy said that she was most impressed with the Rest Camp, very clean, attractive and very friendly staff. The disappointing news is that the National Parks have increased their entry fees. For foreigners at the Rainforest the fee is $30, $20 for regional and for locals remains the same at $5. Accommodation rates range from $40 up to 350 for internationals, $35 up to $265 for regional then $20 up to $175 for locals. We will be living in Kleinmond, by the sea and the majestic mountains, south east of Cape Town. God bless and be with you all. Byeeee! +++++++++ Dear All, Please be aware that there are R200 counterfeit notes circulating on the market. I heard about the counterfeit notes on 702 last week Tuesday and I checked my money on Thursday and discovered I had 2 of these counterfeit notes. I am 100% certain that I received the money from inside the bank, so I went to standard bank to get the notes exchanged. They refused to exchange money on the spot, and just said they will investigate and give me a call yesterday, and they never did. So if you end up with these notes, the bank may not be able to assist you. There are many differences between the real R200 note and the counterfeit one, but you won't notice the difference if you are holding the counterfeit in isolation and you don't know what to check. I have attached a picture of the real R200 note and the counterfeit one, the top/first note on the picture is the real one. If you end up with one of these notes, here are a few differences to look out for: The counterfeit R200 notes are signed in orange and are written president governor and the legitimate ones are signed in grey/black and written governor at the bottom of the signature, The counterfeit note has a big R200 printed on the top right hand corner of the governor signature whereas the real note has R200 printed on the top left and bottom right corners with smaller fonts, The counterfeit R200 note is about 3mm shorter than the real note, The silver strip that runs across the R200 note is thinner on the counterfeit note and thicker on the real note, The counterfeit notes are more orange in colour than the real notes. It is suspected that 1 million of these counterfeit notes are in circulation, so one or more of these notes may end up in your hands if you don 't take precaution .!!!! ++++++++ Thanks for evocative description of The Falls and Kariba. Aaaah...my husband Mike used to work on the Operation Noah rescue when he was a schoolboy at Milton. He would go up with Lofty and Kathleen Stokes. He gave his poor Mom a fright when she saw him being treed by an angry rhino on Canadian TV ! I was just talking about John Edmonds. Someone sent me a moving poem about an ANZAC soldier, and I replied that it sounded like a John Edmonds song. Mike and I are well embedded in the Cambridgeshire countryside now, with senior bus passes and the power to vote in a good democracy. We've never voted for a winning candidate. The last elections we worked for were in Sinoia circa 1979, when we worked tirelessly for The Rhodesia Party. Alan Savory was the charismatic leader, and we had such high hopes, but alas, not to be. We read Muzorewa's obit with a certain wry smile. Give our love to Bulawayo and keep up your good work. I am not sure how many of you received my earlier mail regarding the search for relatives of Bruce Burns. My system kept informing me that it did not recognise a host of addresses - so I have reorganised my contacts list and hope I have more success with this attempt. Neill Jackson has managed to make contact with Bruce's sister, Annette Morkel, and Bruce's nephew, Robert Hale. Shaughn Shiels (an ex-cricketing foe in Selebi-Phikwe) put me on to Andy Olver, in Bulawayo, who in turn contacted Linda Kreidl. Linda gave us Annette's name and, armed with this, Neil found Rob Hale in Pretoria via contacts in Chiredzi where Annette used to live. Linda's contribution was the single most important catalyst in our search but, that said, I am eternally grateful to all involved, no matter how big or small your contribution has been. It was a long struggle accompanied by a long story, too long to outline here but, I shall mail you again once Neill's book is published. It promises to be a fascinating read. Yesterday I read a script by Prop Geldenhuys who is also involved with the search team. Prop openly admits that he wept buckets when he eventually found relatives of men who died in the Puma crash way back in September 1979. I can sympathise with Prop's feelings because I too shed a few tears when Neill reported how elated (yet somewhat shocked) Annette and Rob were with the news of the discovery of the crash site and the mass grave of our fallen men. This is not the end, however, because we are still looking for Dave Prosser's sister, Biddie, and relatives of Mike Alan Jones. Any information on these two would be gratefully received. I have used the Internet extensively but, have learnt that people are far more helpful than machines. It took more than 80 people to participate in the search for Bruce's relatives and it was word of mouth that eventually led the team to success. Coates - f1maine@yahoo.com ++++++++ My parents and I lived in Bulawayo in the late 30's to early 40's. I recall that my father, Tom Roy, volunteered for military duty in North Africa early 40's. During that time (during that time I was about 8 to 10 years old) my mother, Mary Bridget (Paddy) Roy, had under her wing for a short while, a woman who as I recall had problems of some kind. Bear in mind my age at the time. Her surname may have been "Ashley". This woman then departed for the Cape and took ship for the UK as far as I remember. During the voyage she disappeared and as far as I know was never accounted for. Do you have any leads you could give me on the subject? I am Desmond Thomas Roy living in Wellington, New Zealand.
