GWAAI RIVER HOTEL

A friend today gave me images of the Gwaai River Hotel taken in recent years, and it hurled me back to my childhood. The hotel is a fixture of my very early youth, inextricably locked into my earliest memories of Zimbabwe. A year or so ago I was with my father when we drove past the turning off to the hotel, and I asked him to take me back so I could see it again: 'There's nothing there anymore; I don't think you should see it'. My father, who once introduced me to a friend of his as his 'bush baby', knows how much I loved the place.

I understood from the pictures I saw today why he didn't want me to see it. It is gone. Totally destroyed, and all this senseless destruction has taken place in the last ten years in the wake of Zanu PF's chaotic land reform programme. My memories, however, are not destroyed.

The hotel was a hub of the local community, attracting miners, safari operators, hunters, conservationists, farmers and passing tourists. My memories are those of a child: of the gloriously blue swimming pool, with a paddling pool as warm as wee at one end. A trampoline that was less boing-boing-boing and more ker-booyooing - ker-boyooing - ker-boyooing (if most trampolines aspired to be being a tightly-pulled drum, this one longed for retirement days as a deep feather-bed). It was wonderful though - especially when an adult hopped on: I remember my father bouncing me while I sat at his feet, so high that he literally sent me flying off the trampoline, fortunately caught by someone standing near-by.

I remember the putt-putt course, crafted out of concrete in impossible humps and tunnels. And the tennis-courts near the trampoline, children shrieking and bouncing while adults - all wearing crisp whites - played tennis. I remember taking a turn at pulling the dining room's punkah wallah - I was hopelessly bad at it. And in later years when I was bit older, the horses: two in particular, a smallish brown horse and a larger grey that had an attitude and was my nemesis, both very efficient at flicking their ears at Gwaai flies.

People who were 'grown-ups' at the time will now fondly talk about the money collection - currencies from everywhere in the world - framed in the bar. And the huge parties, especially at New Year. My memories of those evenings are of hurtling around the gardens at night, in my pajamas when I should have been in bed, with a whole group of other kids while our parents partied.

In many respects these memories are predictable, but there are always three thoughts that I have which precede these.

The first is of the short drive towards the hotel, the car hot and stuffy from a long journey turning onto a road that dipped down to a narrow concrete bridge with a stomach-pulling lurch as the car rose on the other side and then cocked to the right - the hotel facing us just before we turned.

My second memory (which surprises me given I was so young) is of the birdlife: walking through the narrow gate in the wall into a sanctuary of shady trees around the front of the hotel, and into a prism of dappled light and bird-song.

My third memory is of the proprietors, Harold and Sylvia Broomberg, who ran the hotel for decades, including the horror times of the war and the Gukuruhundi. It is only after my adult mind has arrived and been welcomed by them that I turn to the 'sweetie' memories of childish fun listed above.

As I've grown up I've developed a deep reluctance to look back to those times. For a start, much of the content on the web where people celebrate 'looking back' is dominated by ex-Rhodesian die-hards, their memories offered to the world in the context of '...see... things were better then than they are now'. This mind-set denies the reality of the experiences of the majority at the time, and in sharing my memories, I in no way want anyone to think I endorse the historical and social context they exist within. However, nor do I want to qualify the sheer joy and innocence of childhood memories with political caveats.

I know full well that had I experienced those days from the perspective of the person I have grown up to become today, I would look at pre-Independence experiences with a very different set of eyes. As a child though, I was unaware of the context I grew up in: I didn't know until I was much older, for example, that behind his back some people referred to my father as a 'communist', because his views of the current context angered many around him (the word used less to accurately describe his political views, and hurled more as an expletive at a man who believed the Smith government trying to maintain the status-quo was profoundly wrong).

I think one of the most overwhelming reasons to not want to look back though is the nostalgic pain it invokes. I looked at the photos my friend gave me with deep sadness, and then found myself gripped by a desire to see pictures of what it looked like when I was child. In my search to do so I found a Facebook group, and it was when I saw pictures of Harold and Sylvia that I started crying as I recognised the deeply familiar faces of two people that I have such fond memories of.Harold and Sylvia Broomberg

Only then did it dawn on me that the beauty and warmth of the place and my most treasured memories had everything to do with these two people.

I remember both of them exuding an incredible gentleness, softly spoken and extremely kind. They knew me by name even though I must have been one of hundreds of children passing through their hotel, whining before we reached the front door that I didn't want to use the loo first, I wanted to go straight to the trampoline! I know that my parents were probably aware that they were arriving at an establishment owned and run as a formal business by a couple, but as a child I had no appreciation of formalities: for me, visiting the Gwaai River Hotel was like arriving at a relative's home and settling in as quickly as possible, and moaning like hell when I had to leave. Harold and Sylvia made it feel that way.

In the discussion section of the Facebook group, Harold and Sylvia's daughter writes in 2008:

Harold has a prayer that has been in his heart almost all his life. It goes like this:

All through this day
let me touch as many
lives as possible,
and every life I touch
do You, dear Lord, quicken,
whether through the words I say,
the things I do
or the life I live.
So be it.

Harold carried this prayer in his heart, but he showed it in his actions and speech too.

When I first saw the photos my friend gave me today, I felt deeply depressed and I said 'I'm never going to go back there. My dad was right, I'll bawl'.

Her response was one word: 'Rebuild'.

There is something very forward-thinking and positive about that: just because it's over doesn't mean it's OVER. And as I realised towards the end of my self-indulgent trip down memory-lane, the real gift wasn't the stuff - the fan, the trampoline, the putt-putt course etc. What made it so special to so many - even if they don't properly realise it yet - was that it was run with love and deep affection for the people who visited the place. Harold's prayer says it all: if only his prayer was the philosophy in the hearts of everyone and all the political parties involved our country, we would be rich and happy beyond our wildest dreams.

Harold died last year, peacefully in his sleep. I can only imagine how Sylvia and their family may feel when they see these images: but I hope they take away from this a perception that the most important part of Gwaai River Hotel, the heart and soul of the place, can never be destroyed by the hate and ugly destructiveness of and his thugs. And that's the positive attitude and warm spirit embodied by Harold and his wife: a special thing to keep in mind and hand down to generations to come as we all move forwards to rebuild, repair and nurture our beloved country.

If we treasure this spirit instead, and stop weeping about what once was, then what a gift they've given us.

Admission is free. Later on at 7.30 Vishal Hiraskar will introduce his earlier film "Tao of the Traveller": "What did she bury, the old Indian woman in white? Why did this one ordinary girl happen to uncover what had been buried so many life times ago? On her journey across the icy mountains of New Zealand, the ancient rain forests and the great boulder strewn plains of Australia, and the mango woods and villages of India, she finds her answers. We think, sometimes, that the deepest secrets of life can only be uncovered in some secret monastery. We think, sometimes, that the greatest adventure, the most meaningful quest can only be found by someone not bound by an ordinary life. For this ordinary girl the journey was higher and deeper, harder and easier, more wondrous and more alone than anything she could have imagined. It changed everything for her.. and she hadn't even been looking." The film, which lasts just over an hour, was shot mainly in New Zealand and the scenery and filming are breathtaking. Admission by donation.

Led by their mayor, Germain Lesage (Raymond Bouchard), the villagers rise to the challenge with good-hearted duplicity. However, as their deception continues, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain. Just as Doctor Lewis begins to respond to the simple 'authenticity' of the village, the question arises: how will he feel when he finds out it's based on lies? Pillay Bernard
I never got a chance to say goodbye, a chance to let you know how much I love you
I came to your funeral, I saw you, but it's not how I wanted to see you
I kept asking why you were taken away so soon but only God knows.
I have cried and cried so many times because I wanted you to come back to us because I miss you, because I wanted Jayden to meet you and see how great you are.
I wanted him to meet my Grandfather who told me many stories, took me on many trips and taught me many great things. You taught me unconditional love and forgiveness.
Your one wish was to see Jayden. I am sorry I did not make it. I know you see him and he sees you. He loves and misses you and he asks to see your picture all the time.
I am happy that you both have met in your own special way. I will continue to tell him about you. You will forever have a special place in my heart, a part of me left with you so you are not alone. We will meet in my dreams as we always do. I know you told me to stop worrying you are okay but I cry because I miss you and love you so very much.
I love you papa always and forever. Love your granddaughter Danielle (Canada)

Pillay Bernard.
It's a year ago and yet it seems like yesterday
You might have gone but your memory lives on
I miss you more than anyone will ever know
We were one, and now half of me has gone
I feel so lost and alone and the wound still feels so fresh
I will live to do the things we would have done together
Thank you for being you. You are always in my heart - Cathy.

Pillay Bernard.
It's a year that passed and yet it feels like just yesterday.
Memories were forged in all our hearts,
from a man I'm proud to call my father
Love and miss you Ryan and Noddy (Canada)

Pillay Bernard
Dad
Loving you is easy; we do it every day,
Missing you is heartache, that never goes away,
Our hearts still ache in sadness, our tears still flow,
For what it meant to lose you Dad,
No one will ever know.
Megan & Sonny (London)

Pillay Bernard
Papa I can't believe you are gone a year. It seems just like yesterday you were here.
Life would be so much better if you were here with us. But God takes the best of our loved ones to be with him. You left us on the 20th March 2009 I think it was too soon, however, it is not like we will never meet again. We all miss you so much. My Papa, My role model, my motivator and most of all a really close father figure who is so close to my heart. I love and miss you always.
Taahira.

Mary Renshaw Ward Haynes-Smart. A memorial service for the late Mary Haynes-Smart will be held at the Whitestone School chapel on Wednesday 24 March at 3;30pm. Any enquiries should be directed to prward@netconnect.co.zw

IN MEMORIUM

ROBERTS - Mandy
In memory of my much loved Mum who passed away peacefully in the UK on the 19th March 2008.

Two long years have passed my Mum
And still my heart holds a sea of tears
They ebb and flow with the tide of each day
And sometimes for strength I have to pray.

Though tears spill over less often now
The grief in my heart weighs me down
A certain void that nothing can fill
I lost you my Mum, so nothing will.

Life must go on, as is often said
And my higher purpose I must fulfill
This I know and this I will do
But each day brings the pain of losing you.

So I push through the grief and live my life
While wondering why yours had to end
I understand your purpose in life was done
But it's so hard to accept your fight wasn't won.

I have something though that nothing can touch
The treasure of memories I hold of you
It's a book in my heart of pages I turn
Through the tears in my eyes that fiercely burn.

I know you live on in a beautiful place
Beyond the scope of my earth bound eyes
I wish all peace, love and serenity for you
As the only thing left I now can do.

It's now 2 years since the terrible day I lost you my Mum. Rest in peace now. I send you my love on the wings of a thousand Angels and I will miss you for all the days of my life.
Please God take good care of my Mum.
With love from your daughter, Caroline, your son-in-law Craig and your much loved grandchildren Sarah, Sianne and Callum.
Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by your sisters Pauline and Rosaleen, your brother-in- law Eric and family, Colleen and family and John, Sheila and Roy Turnbull

SOME BELATED THANKS

Caroline Turnbull would like to take this opportunity to thank the Doctors and staff of the Cancer Wing, of Bradford Royal Infirmary, Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK for their unfailing compassion and devoted care of my mother, Madeline (Mandy) Roberts during her illness. Grateful thanks must go particularly to Dr. Conn who promised my mother after her diagnosis of final stage lung cancer, that her life would not end in pain. Thank you to Dr. Conn and the cancer nurses for keeping that promise. The loss of my Mum was devastating but I will always be grateful that she passed away peacefully and without suffering.

Further, two years on, I would like to express my gratitude to the staff of Mater Dei ICU, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to which my mother was admitted several times between the months of November 2007 and January 2008 before she left for treatment in the UK. The compassion and care the staff of the ICU gave my mother was admirable and I am so grateful to you all for your dedication and support.

Finally and very importantly, I would like to thank Dr Mark Dixon for his care of my mother during her illness. Dr Dixon's compassion and professionalism made the nightmare of my mother's illness easier to bear. His knowledge, dedication and caring attitude, are a credit to the medical profession. As a result of Dr Dixon's treatment, my mother had several weeks of much improved health during which she was able to fly out to the UK. Once there, her illness advanced very quickly but what matters the most is that she was able to benefit from technology that ensured that she never knew the pain and suffering that cancer usually causes. My heartfelt thanks go to Dr Dixon. Were it not for him, my mother would not have survived long enough to get to the UK. We are very fortunate to have a physician of Dr Dixon's caliber in Bulawayo. Words are inadequate but my gratitude to him is undying.

A Memorial Service for the late VINKO KOMBOL will be held at The Ascot Coffee Shop, Ascot Race Course, Bulawayo on Wednesday 24th March at 4pm.
Please will friends join me as we say our last farewell and remember Vinko's many successful years as an Owner/Trainer at Ascot.

6) PETS

Two wonderful Bulawayo ladies have been authorised by the SPCA to foster , in our homes , abandoned and stray cats and kittens until they can be re - homed .

It is becoming VERY difficult to continue , not just because the number of cat - loving people is decreasing , but also because the number of stray cats is increasing .

Berry has told us that there are NO cat - traps there any more . they borrowed one from Dr Stevenage but the stray cat was so thin that she failed to set off the metal plate inside !

SO ...
do you know someone who knows some light engineering skills and who might be prepared to undertake this work ? someone with social awareness ?
IT IS REALLY URGENT !
Sue has been trying for ages to trap many stray cats on a property in Burnside - 2 mother cats are so wild that they have now had 2 more litters ! We both feel this cruelty must stop !

7A) GOSSIP COLUMN

HI JACKING

Two weeks ago I was a passenger traveling to Johannesburg with my son, his wife and little son, not yet 3 years old. We stopped in Polokwane at a popular, well advertised, chicken 'Drive In Takeaway' fast food outlet. It is situated on the main road through Polokwane, behind the statue of a brass donkey, where the main road bears to the right to the N1. It was 6pm and without getting out the car, we ordered and received our food. We had just gone out of their premises and were traveling slowly to join the main road when we were Hi Jacked by three men. One man managed to get the car keys from the ignition as the automatic window was still going up, he pointed a weapon at my son, demanded all our money and started searching. At the same time, two other men opened the passenger doors, ripped all the gold jewellery off my daughter in law and took all the money we had from our handbags. The entire robbery probably took half a minute and we lost R14,000, a lot of sentimental gold jewellery and a cell phone! Fortunately, because we did not resist, we were not harmed.

I decided to make this known on Morning Mirror so that other Zimbabwean travelers can be warned. The police told us these people are targeting Zimbabwe cars every day in Polokwane.
On our return to Bulawayo we have received many phone calls about the incident and have learned of other similar attacks at the very same Fast Food outlet, so please do not stop there for fast food !!!..
I must add that the Police in Polokwane were both sympathetic and efficient, in particular, a Police reservist insisted we go to his home and stay overnight with him and his wife to recover from the ordeal before traveling on our way, the Police escorted us to his charming small holding just off the N1.
The emergency phone number for Police help throughout South Africa is 10111
Our sincere thanks to Leon and Olwin for caring and for your kindness and wonderful support.

YOUR GARDEN IN MARCH
- Now is the time to start planning for your winter flower displays. You will need to decide when to remove summer-flowering annuals so that the beds an borders can be prepared for winter and spring-flowering plants. If this task is left too late, the winter and spring floral shows will be delayed. Whilst you are planning what to plant, remember to avoid planting bedding annuals like petunias in the same areas as you have done before, unless you replace the soil. The soil will need to be rested from the same variety and re-planting the same varieties will increase the risk of pests and diseases affecting the new plants.

- Take a walk round your garden after substantial rain has fallen, and check the condition of your soil. Did the water drain away quickly, or did the ground stay water-logged? Bad drainage can cause yellowing leaves and a general 'poorly' appearance of plants. Plants that need excellent drainage and do not respond well to water-logged soils include lavender, dianthus and daisies. Clay soils can become particularly water-logged.

- All this lush growth in the garden is still easily broken in strong winds and heavy rain, and excessive growth can also block out light and air from neighbouring plants, and so some judicious trimming and cutting back is advisable.

- This cutting-back does not include winter and spring-flowering shrubs such as magnolia, camellia and azalea, as these are developing flower buds at this time, and will need regular watering to prevent bud drop. Do not forget to keep fertilising with a high-potassium fertiliser blend to maximise your flowering potential.

- As we approach the end of the hot wet season, this is a good time to plan for the planting of shrubs, trees and climbers. This is because the roots of the plants become well established before the cooler weather arrives. The plants will then be stronger and ready to push out new growth much sooner once the warmer temperatures of spring return.

- Before you do plant any larger shrubs or trees, make sure you are ready by checking what its needs are - where it grows, how big it grows, when it flowers, if it is a water-wise plant or if it will need extra watering. With trees, check the growth habit, as often a tree is planted near a boundary wall, only to create problems in a few years time. At Wrights Garden Centre, we are able to provide you with this information.

- When planting trees and large shrubs, all the preparation you can give to the soil initially will have a marked effect on the tree's potential. To begin with, dig a hole 150cm wide and 75cm deep for trees, large shrubs and fruit trees, and 100cm wide and 60cm deep for average shrubs. The theory that roots will go round and round in a round hole, resulting in a stunted tree, is misconceived, except in soil so stony that any hole would be inadequate. Roots do not travel fast enough to be deflected and some roots have enormous powers of penetration; so dig either a round or square hole, whatever is convenient.

While the hole is being dug, keep an eye on when the topsoil ends and the subsoil begins. Topsoil is richer in available plant food and is usually a darker colour. If the subsoil is particularly stony and poor, discard it and replace with more topsoil. Remove all stones and debris larger than a tennis ball. Once your hole is dug and your soil excavated, add between 15-25kg good compost and 500g general garden fertiliser. For larger trees and fruit trees, add 250g single superphosphate. Average sized shrubs and climbers will require only 250g of general garden fertiliser. Mix all the compost, soil and fertiliser together thoroughly outside the hole and then add back the hole, a little at a time. You can now plant your new tree, by taking out enough soil from the hole to fit the ball of soil of the new plant. Do not disturb the roots. Young trees and taller shrubs will benefit from being staked to prevent wind damage. Do it while the roots are still visible and set the stake deep. Once the soil has been fully returned and properly consolidated, form a 'saucer' around the plant for watering purposes and then give the plant a thorough soaking.

Watering:- The first watering should be at least 50l, thereafter
- from August until it rains; twice a week 20l to 50l, depending on size of plant.
- during rains; whenever there is a fortnights dry spell, resume as above.
- March to May; once a week 20l to 50l depending on size of plant.
- June to July; once a fortnight 20l.
It is always better to water from a drum or large watering can, as this will ensure surface flooding and equal distribution. Other Garden Tasks For March
- Lightly prune shrubs such as abelia that have sent out long shoots to encourage branching and to keep the plant compact.
- Cut back stems of faded hydrangeas to plump the buds. Stems that did not carry flowers this year should be left to flower next year.
- Tie stems on flowering climbers horizontally to a support to encourage more flowers.
- Clip hedges lightly, tapering them slightly at the top, so that rain reaches the root area.
- Collect pine needles and spread them thickly around azaleas and camellias to retain soil moisture. If you cannot find pine needles, tea leaves and coffee grounds can also be substituted to provide a good acid mulch.
- Regularly deadhead dahlias, and fertilise every second week.
- Fork compost into soil in preparation for planting winter vegetable crops.
- Water citrus trees regularly as far as the drip line. Bury fallen fruit to discourage fruit fly.

Laughing children, all say please.
Smiling nannies loud and chatting,
Queens Club cricket, Rhodies batting.
Braais and picnics, Maleme Dam,
Tanganda tea and Colcom Ham.
Greeting friends to talk and talk,
Hillside Dams were safe to walk.
Snakes and mossies, flying ants,
Schoolboy rugby, winning chants.
Swimming parties,sleep-in nights,
Christmas Carols by candle light.
Honest Police, able and willing,
Downing's rolls ten for a shilling.
Sunday car trips, Matopos caves,
OM 's and Busters Saturday raves.
Week-end outings to Vic Falls ,
Dancing and Ballet in Curtain Calls.
Beautiful gardens, Centenary Park ,
Window shopping just after dark.
Burger and Hot-dogs, Eskimo Ices,
Aromas from cafes of curry and spices.
Snow white tackies, Bata shoes,
Charity fetes, tombola and booze.
Clear blue skies or heavy rain,
Wish I could live it all over again.
Memories fade, so much to tell.
Oh Yes, Dear Rhodesia
I remember you well.
