A NINE-PIECE music group from Bulawayo is proving that disability is not inability after landing an Oscar nomination for Short Documentary. Music by Prudence is a short film produced by Prudence Mabhena, the lead singer of Liyana. Liyana's music was described by one American magazine as 'a fresh, bright sound led by a singer with the voice of an angel.' The 35-minute documentary charts the band's life story, with special focus on the 22-year-old Prudence who was born disabled and suffered rejection by her family at an early age. "Sunrise over the bush. A fresh morning star spilling vitality over scrambling, dry rocks. The African plain: supple and green. Clouds (celestial rapids) racing over an otherwise halcyon sky. Against these, the voice of a woman: clear and strong. 'Liyana,' she sings. 'Yes,' they respond. 'Where are you?' she calls. 'We are here,' they answer. 'Come,' she beckons. 'We are coming.' Her voice is stirring, but also still, in contrast to the rushing sky. It's the voice of a leader, someone in a place of power and wisdom and uncommon peace. Then into the picture rolls its owner: a young African woman in a wheelchair. Her arms are twisted and useless. Without legs, she has never walked. The source of this commanding, compelling music is Prudence Mabhena, 21, the hero of our tale. Prudence lives in Zimbabwe, and for a long time almost no one knew about that hauntingly beautiful voice. No one knew the strong, resilient woman that owned it. They were unable to overlook her body: crippled and deformed with a debilitating condition. When Prudence was born, her paternal grandmother wanted her dead. In Zimbabwe, many disabled children are believed to be the result of witchcraft. In extreme cases, families kill them-to remove the 'curse' from their family. Prudence's mother kept her and fed her. Cast out of her husband's (Prudence's father's) home, she brought the baby to her own mother's rural home. Four years later, she left. Music by Prudence traces the path of this little girl, and her remarkable transcendence from a world of hatred and superstition into one of music, love, and possibility. The child was raised by Rachel Ncube, her maternal grandmother. Grandmother Ncube taught her to sing. A working farmer, she would strap the little girl to her back as she worked the fields. But when Prudence turned 7, she knew she couldn't school her. So she sent her to live with her father and his new family. There, Prudence fell prey to neglect and isolation. Her stepmother refused to touch her, and called her a worthless, helpless 'ant.' For two years, Prudence lived like an animal--crawling on the floor and sleeping in her own urine, and worse. Every day, she dragged herself to a mango tree in the backyard, and told herself that her nightmare will end someday. She was despondent enough to attempt suicide--twice. There is a haven away from this pain: King George VI School & Centre for Children with Physical Disabilities (KG6). Privately funded, KG6 struggles on the brink of destitution. Yet every year, hundreds of disabled children blossom and thrive. Prudence gets a scholarship to KG6, and her new life begins. She gets a wheelchair. She goes to school. She begins singing in earnest. Liyana becomes Prudence's family. Her new friends understand her journey. They rehearse together, joke and laugh, and collaborate to write new songs. Bulawayo provides the film's colorful backdrop. Like the rest of the country, Zimbabwe's second largest city is largely dysfunctional. Water stoppages and electrical blackouts are daily events. The supermarkets have no food, so residents are forced to use the black market for necessities. Inflation and crime run rampant. Prudence teaches at KG6. She collects a salary, room, and board. Despite her disabilities, she is one of Zimbabwe's rare, employed citizens. She speaks in a soft voice with a British lilt--spiked with jokes and playfulness and spirit. She is transformed. The movie's final scene is a concert by Liyana. The crowd applauds and whistles, then the screen darkens, leaving only Prudence's lustrous, smiling face. Recalling the opening sequence, her face is in perfect symmetry to the African sky, rushing and streaming towards hope. Few Oscar films have packed in more profundity per minute than this tale of Prudence Mabhena, 21, and seven other disabled young musicians in Zimbabwe transcending bigotry and isolation through art and fellowship." iThemba productions. We salute you all at KG!V. We salute Prudence and the amazing Liyana Band. We salute Elinor Burkett and Roger Ross Williams and we salute unequivocally Inez Hussey and the staff of KG1V. ++++++++ 2) NOTICES MUSIC BY MOONLIGHT which was postponed because of the torrential rain, will now be on the 14th May, at Hillside Dams, from 6.30 onwards. I have just phoned ZESA to ask how they can 'cut off' power when they have not established exactly what the consumer has used, they confirmed their last meter reading was in Sept, I only got an account in February for November reading, the last account received prior to that being for August reading, however all these accounts show 'estimate', every month I pay US$150.00 awaiting an up to date account. I gave ZESA the reading from this morning that I had read and it was 6000 units less than their estimate, this being the figure they had used when discontinuing power. How has ZESA got the cheek to 'cut off' power AND charge interest on non payment when their books are so fictitious? On another account it is reflected that I paid US$233.34, as all my payments are only rounded US$ how they get .34c is a mystery. Another account reflects a bought forward figure of nil, yet I have been charged US$0.08 interest. What sort of accounting system is ZESA using and what caliber of accounting staff are they employing? There have been sightings reported by two people this month, one of 4 birds and the other of 6 - both within City limits. The group of 6 were on the roof of the National Executor & Trust building in Josiah Tongogara Street between 11th & 12th Avenues. Please read this poster from Geoff Lowe in Harare who is in charge of tracking the progress of these unwanted birds, and any assistance you can give us in locating them will be much appreciated. The Common Myna (Indian Myna) Acridotheres tristis is native to India, central and southern Asia. Although introduced to parts of South Africa early last century they have only recently began a range expansion northwards and recently reached Zimbabwe. The myna has been listed by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) amongst the top 100 most invasive species in the world. Because of its aggressive nature and great adaptability to various habitats it has become a serious pest in the many parts of the world it has colonised. Indian Mynas are very aggressive birds. They are known to evict other birds from their nests and may remove the eggs or chicks. They may also take over roosting places. Indian Mynas pose a danger to our indigenous birds especially those which use nest holes, such as starlings and barbets, which they will displace. Although they generally prefer urban habitats they may be becoming adapted to survive in natural habitats. They may be seen in pairs or small groups, but where they are well established they will roost in very large numbers. They frequently forage on the ground and will eat fruit, insects, worms, seeds and household scraps. They nest in other birds' nests and also under the eves of buildings. Indian Mynas spread rapidly. They are unwanted and we are advised to dispose of any we see if we can. The range expansion into Zimbabwe and the impact on other bird species are being monitored. If you see this bird please could you provide the following information: the date, time and place the number of birds seen and their behaviour, especially observed inter-actions with other birds. I just wanted to say Thank You So much for sharing all those wonderful photos on your website - so lovely to see dear old Bulawayo again and Matopos. Someone pointed out that you had some photos on and oh, my! what a nostalgic trip for me! So many memories, both sad and happy. The one of Audrey Edington and Henry Olonga brought tears to my eyes... memories of Girls' College and all that we have gone through and dear Henry Olonga who wore that black armband in mourning for his country! And the Jacarandas! The Matopos Hotel... Bulawayo Club, the wide streets and oh! where does one stop... Memories that will never fade! Too beautiful for words... There is NO place like Zimbabwe. Please don't take those photos off your website as I will re-visit it time and again. I have sent the link on to both my sons to enjoy too. My youngest son is so nostalgic about things old! Two weeks ago I finally became a British Citizen and now await my British Passport! But I'll never be British in my heart... I'm a True Blue Zimbabwean and how I miss it! Blue skies and warm sunshine and people! I do hope this finds you well and fighting on... Glad to see they are re-marking the roads... where there's life there's still hope! Keep smiling! He's working with the disabled people of the developing world. It's very strange getting used to living here. Firstly it's so bone-achingly cold, and second so beautiful. The old buildings are wonderful, with gargoyles, angels and kings carved on architraves and crannies. The cultural life is marvelous, with lots of free concerts in chapels and halls dotted around the city. Fortunately we could make use of the January sales to stock up on smart shirts and warm clothes. Our lovely friend Lynne, who also went to Fairbridge with Mike back in the Fifties, and has her ear to the ground, invited me down to London to meet Alexander McCall Smith at a classy bookshop called Daunts, off Baker St. he was to be reading and signing his latest novel about Mma Ramotswe, the famous lady detective. Of course I accepted, and we found ourselves sitting in the front row laughing at his funny comments and digressions about his other novels. People may remember him as head boy of CBC also way back in the Fifties. His sister Morag, who I knew at Townsend School, was there too, and we could do a quick catch-up. I even worked at the Bulawayo Public Library with Fiona Moffat, who is mentioned in his books, with her husband Howard. Amazing having your past catch up so vividly! Howard did his internship at Mpilo Hospital. So glad you are getting rain, even though it's upsetting the social calendar. We have snow in the morning, the sleet, and if we're lucky we see some sun in the afternoon. Brrrr... I am assisting a friend of mine, Neill Jackson (ex-Capt RLI), with the location of any relatives of Bruce. His father is Robert (Bob) Burns and his mother is Edythe Burns. There was a second son, Phillip. The last place I can trace them to is Hwange where Bob managed the Chibuku brewery. 2Lt Bruce Burns (Engineers Corp) was killed in action on 06 September 1979 when he perished, along with 16 other servicemen, as a result of a SAAF Puma helicopter being hit by an RPG7 during the raid on Mapai, Mozambique. In 2009 Neill Jackson was part of an expedition team, led by ex-Capt Rick Van Malsen, that discovered the crash site and the mass grave of the 17 soldiers not far from Mapai village. A cross, bearing the inscription 'To Brave Men' has been placed on the grave and negotiations are underway to fence off the area and erect a memorial to the 17 fallen. The Burns family would surely like to know the truth about the raid and the fact that their son's grave has been found, and is being cared for by a small group of dedicated ex-servicemen. He has to complete another six weeks and then he will commence chemotherapy treatment in tablet form. The great news about this is that he can take his chemo medication from home. This will be a tremendous relief to the family - just to have him with them. Fundraising and generous donations have financed the radium to date and there is enough money left to cover another two weeks of radium. We are desperately seeking the remaining funds for Wayne to fully complete his treatment. We now need about USD25 000.00 - a hefty sum when you look at all those zeros! But it could so easily be raised if 250 people could manage USD100.00 each. Whatever kind contribution anyone could find themselves able to donate would help to keep Wayne's recovery on track. Wayne has come so far. He has a positive attitude and is determined to recover. Having survived the surgical removal of the brain tumor, especially one the size of a tennis ball, he is determined to win.
