Mayerling - Ballet, music by Liszt
There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m.
It's unlikely material for a ballet perhaps but "Mayerling" is a powerful and spectacular work that tells the tragic story of the double-death of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary and the 17-year-old Mary Vetsera.
Tickets: US$3.00/R25.00, free to members. Dinner will be available to order.

Monday 23 November, Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Nina Schumann and Luis Magalhaes (two pianos)
Brahms, arr. Constantin Silvestri: Variations on a Theme of Paganini - Books I & II; Arensky: Suite No.1 in F major; Arensky: Suite No.2 - "Silhouettes"; Lutoslawski: Variations on a Theme of Paganini ; Copland, arr.Leonard Bernstein: El Sal n M xico.
The Magalh es/Schumann Piano Duo is based at the Stellenbosch University.
Luis Magalh es started playing the piano at the age of five and by the time he went to study piano at the University of North Texas in 1999 he was already a seasoned recitalist and solo-and chamber music performer. There he met his duo partner Nina Schumann where she had come to study with Vladimir Viardo after having met him at masterclasses in South Africa. The "TwoPianists" duo soon achieved international recognition and has given performances in the USA, Germany, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland and Japan as well as South Africa.

Booking at the Academy from Monday 9 November. Tickets are US$5.00/R40.00, free to members.

Tuesday 24 November, Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
The Lyric Piano Trio
Haydn: Piano Trio No.39 in G major; Mendelssohn: Piano Trio No.2 in C minor,
Op.66; Shostakovich: Piano Trio No.2 in E minor, Op.67
Peter Martens will be remembered for his cello recital in 2007 and he now returns as a member of the Lyric Trio. He is active as both solo and chamber music performer in South Africa and abroad as well as recording frequently with the SABC. Since the release of his CD "Cello Classics" he has been working on the double set CD of the Beethoven Cello Sonatas with Luis Magalhães. His wife Suzanne was leader of the UP Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra and whilst furthering her studies in Holland and Austria was a member of the Salzburger Musici Chamber Orchestra.
She has held positions of leader of both the Pretoria and Cape Philharmonic Orchestras and was violin lecturer at Pretoria and Stellenbosch Universities.
The programme includes three marvellous trios. To begin with there is the most famous of Haydn's forty or more, the one ending with the sparkling Gypsy Rondo and this is followed by Mendelssohn's C minor Trio, one of his very finest works full of drama and good tunes. After the interval there is Shostakovich's E minor trio which will not be forgotten by anyone who heard it at the 2006 Festival where it made a powerful impact. Written during the Second World War, it is dedicated the to the memory of the man he called his dearest friend who died suddenly in early 1944 and it reflects both grief at the loss and memories of the past in music of extraordinary imagination and power. Absolutely not to be missed by anyone who cares about great music!
Booking at the Academy from Monday 9 November. Tickets are S$5.00/R40.00, free to members. ++
