THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BULAWAYO CLUB

The Bulawayo Club celebrated its 75th anniversary last month, with a gala event that was quite the talk of the town!!

The theme was 1920's and the Gatsby Girls came out in full force wearing their flapper outfits, feathers in the hair, and there was an obvious and pervading smell of moth balls as Grand Mother's fur coat was dragged out from the very back of the cupboard especially for the event!!

The Anti-Fur Society Ladies were not happy but as the champers began to flow and the moths had all flown away in the wind, a festive time was had by all.

The Bulawayo Club is an icon in Bulawayo. The old hitching post still retains pride of place outside the main entrance, where one's horse was hitched prior to a visit to what was originally a "Men Only" Club, which opened in 1895.

"For those who appreciate the splendour and grace of a bygone age, take time off to savour one of the great bastions of Zimbabwe's proud and diverse history,' reads the brochure.

"The Bulawayo Club was founded in 1895. Reveling in a unique tradition and now being lavishly renovated, let us take you back to a time less stressed and cynical. The classic intimacy of this remarkable establishment will ensure that you will return time and time again "

Ideally situated in the heart of Bulawayo, the City of Kings, we can offer fine dining at the Governors' Restaurant, offering a classic culinary experience combined with a refreshing twist of modern Africa; In The Lobengula Lounge you will sink back into the plush furnishings of a venue decorated with early sketches and paintings whilst sipping on appetizing cocktails"

The Bulawayo Club Building is a magnificent structure, an imposing colonial edifice, with a magnificent carpeted staircase sweeping from the Long Bar to the elegant dining room and ballroom, where ladies were actually allowed on high days and holidays!

In the good old bad old days, it was a very bigoted club with firm unfriendly rules, but today under the management of a dynamic young couple, Philip and Sharon Stead, it resounds with light and laughter and old-fashioned etiquette is quietly tucked away although the magnificence of days gone by still remains.

The club is a veritable museum with a fascinating library, wonderful artifacts, incredible furniture and valuable old paintings.

Some formidable and fearsome portraits of unmentionable people frown down upon one from various nooks and crannies, and original Thomas Baines oils of the Victoria Falls decorate the freshly painted walls.

Portraits of past Chairmen of the club dignify the many anterooms, which include the smoking room, the wine cellar, the card room, and the magnificent billiard room. An ornate shoe and boot cleaning chair occupies pride of place in the gents washroom, and one almost expects a little white gloved man to appear to dry ones hands and proffer hand cream in the bathroom, just like the Regent Hotel in Hong Kong!!

Names like Dr Hans Sauer the very first Chairman of the Club, Sir Philip Bouchier Wrey who was in the chair from 1901 - 1926 followed by
1927 - 1933 Sir James McDonald
1936 - 1938 Sir Henry Chapman
1939 - 1944 Sir George Johnson
1946 - 1947 Sir Henry Low CBE

One particularly interesting feature is the centuries old leather bound "gaming book" which is a real treasure, some bets written in beautiful copperplate hand writing, bearing the names of long gone members, in the days which gentlemen's bets were placed on all manner of strange unmentionable things that fascinate men!

The accommodation at the Club has been completely renovated. I well remember when I used to visit my good friend Sue Corke whose dad was the secretary of the club way back in the sixties. The secretary's flat was in the bowels of the Club but we were absolutely convinced that the Club was haunted and spent many a fun evening rattling chains to frighten the guests !!

A feather in the cap of the Amalinda Collection, the beautifully renovated Bulawayo Club hopefully paving the way to peace and prosperity in Zimbabwe.

Khachaturian: Spartacus (10 July)
Friday 24 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. "The narrative of Spartacus centres on the conflict between the two main characters, Spartacus and the Roman general Crassus, and their lovers, the action framed by vast and spectacular military scenes. The magnificent dancing of the Bolshoi principals is very impressive and their stamina extraordinary when the choreography is so continuously athletic, the orchestra plays this often noisy score with great passion and feeling and the camerawork is excellent." [From The Penguin Guide]
Tickets: US$2.00/R15.00. A three-course dinner is available to order at US$10.00.

ACADEMY FESTIVAL WEEK All events by donation unless otherwise stated! Opening Concert
Monday 27 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m.
The opening concert of the Academy's Festival Week features students, teachers and friends of the Academy including Brian Hartman, Sam Kaufman, Deon Marcus, Natascha Muller, Ursula Murray, Ineke te Velde and Kristin Whitehead in a wide variety of music. Bring your supper and enjoy it before...
The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra
Monday 27 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra is one of the most remarkable stories in recent music, a youth orchestra of international standard made up largely of street children. Sir Simon Rattle has called the system that produced it "the most important thing happening in classical music anywhere in the word" , and this DVD of a Salzburg Festival concert features Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition when the orchestra is expanded to monster proportions with 14 double- basses and the rest to match! In the Triple Concerto, Martha Argerich, no less, is the pianist with the Capu on bothers, Renaud and Gautier, the violinist and cellist. The concert is preceded by a documentary, School of Listening, which features the orchestra in a rehearsal of Mahler's First Symphony.
Elizabeth French (piano)
Tuesday 28 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Elizabeth is currently spending a month teaching and assisting at the Academy. She completed an M.Mus. at the Royal Academy of Music, having earlier received a first class honours degree in music from Durham University. She was awarded the Frederic Jackson Memorial Prize on entry to the Academy and became the Meaker Fellow for the year 2005/6. Other awards include the title "Montreal International Music Camp Young Artist of the Year" in 2001. She has performed widely as both soloist and accompanist and has also recorded for the Channel 4 series Arrows of Desire. We're very privileged to have her at the Academy and I should add that she travelled to Zimbabwe at her own expense for which we are enormously grateful. Her recital will be a highlight of the week and the very generous programme is as follows: William Matthias: Toccata alla Danza (1961); Haydn: Sonata in A flat major, Hob.XVI/46; Leonard Bernstein: Touches (1981/83); Mendelssohn: Rondo Capriccioso, Op.14; Chopin: Berceuse; Prokofiev: Sonata No.3 in A minor, Op.28; Beethoven: 32 Variations in C minor, WoO80; York Bowen: Sonatina in C major, Op.144 Advance booking for this concert at the Academy or at the door from 7.00 p.m. on the night; tickets: US$5.00/R40.00 - free to Red Carpet members and members of PAB.
The Peggy Morris Choral Competition

Peggy Morris was very involved in choral music in schools and elsewhere for many years in Zambia and thereafter for a shorter time in Harare. Her daughter now lives in Bulawayo and she and her family have funded this competition, which will be an annual event at the Academy, in Peggy's memory. This year 15 schools have entered. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Student Concert & Whitestone School
Wednesday 29 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m.
A short concert by a range of Academy students will be followed by extracts from the recent Whitestone production of "The Phantom Express" with Andrew Lloyd Webber's music. Bring your supper and enjoy it before.
Puccini: La Boh me
Wednesday 29 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.

[The Times]; "Breathtakingly dramatic and emotional... Full to the brim with some of the best vocal talents of today." [Opera Now]; "The world's finest soprano-tenor team don't only sing with beauty and power, they can also act." [The Evening Standard]; "Beautifully sung all round." [The Observer]; "The lovers' sheer intensity and Dornhelm's cinematic vision make this one of the finest opera films ever - unmissable."[BBC Music]. There's really nothing to add except... don't miss it! Admission: US$2.00/R15.00

The Phantom of the Opera
Friday 31 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.

3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES
UPDATE ON THE CENTENERARY PARK

We need paint, pumps, seedlings, willing hands.
I have received a number of replies from concerned residents local and beyond our boarders. Good news is, the park received reclaimed water for the first time in 10 years and will be getting a regular supply twice weekly. This was guaranteed by the man in charge of the department Engineer Mthunsi.
The fountain which is in need of painting, is full but only two of the six 1.5 hp submersible pumps are working. They all need to be replaced because of age as well as the city hall pump at the Pioneers Well. Par 38 lamps of all colours or similar need to be sourced for the fountain I've managed to get the borehole that feeds The Centenary Park up and running. It had been down for over 8 years.
We need to get seedlings. They are paying nurseries $1 per seedling. This is daylight robbery.
Our trust is working on retrieving the council nursery which has been leased to City of Kings. om: keith01@mweb.co.zw

7a) GOSSIP COLUMN
I was reading your reminiscences of the TV and radio voices in the Mirror of the 6 July (I was a little behind, having been on leave) and I don't know if either of you remember our local Bulawayo dentist, Bob Nixon, who was a dab hand at cricket commentating, ala Charles Fortune style? As I recall he departed our shores to join the BBC Commentary Team and I heard him on a couple of occasions but then no more. Do either of you know what happened to him?

Of course Mags, I too remember your old English teacher, Paddy Vickery, as I grew up surrounded by her family, having gone through school with one in front, one with me and one behind, in descending order; William, John and Teddy and they all looked like their mother!

We certainly did have some lovely voices on radio and TV in Rhodesia, I was talking to a colleague, at work a little while ago Betty Lidbetter (nee Duncan), you may remember her from Bulawayo's ZBC studios and we were trying to remember them all. My family were friends of the Baker's of Bruce fame, he spent many hours doing continuity announcing and odd programmes from the Bulawayo studio. His wife Ronnie bought the, 'Yorkshire Tearoom' from the old dear who ran Haddon and Sly's Tearoom, it was at the end of the Chronicle Building on the Bowden's Pharmacy side.

There was also Malcolm Russell, who's parents lived just up the road from us in Napier Avenue, Martin Lee, who lived next door to Anthony and Joan Bancroft (Wendy's Cousin) in Fairbridge Way and what with Noreen's lot like Alan Riddell, Don Burdett, Nigel Cane, Paddy O'Brian, Ken Marshall and so many others, we were spoiled for choice. Radio and TV presenters these days just don't compare, no wonder the English language is going down the tubes so quickly, no role models!
Anyway, enough of my meanderings, I hope you both have great weekends.
Regards
Colin JENNINGS

So come and enjoy BIG CAVE CAMP in the heart of this pristine wilderness, where you can walk, climb or simply switch off! We have Rock Art, grainbin shelters, excellent birding. Recently we had a first ever sighting of a magnificent Saddlebill Stork!!

Situated on the Kezi Road 46 kms, from, town and 15kms. From the Rhino Park. Full Board Rates including tea and coffee, drinks are an extra. We have a well stocked bar, and corkage is charged on drinks brought in to the Lodge.

How to Dance in the Rain

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.
He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.
I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?'
He smiled as he patted my hand and said, 'She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is.'
I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought,
'That is the kind of love I want in my life.'
True love is neither physical, nor romantic.
True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.
With all the jokes and fun that are in e-mails, sometimes there is one that comes along that has an important message. This one I thought I could share with you.
The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have. I hope you share this with someone you care about. I just did.
'Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.
