Yes, power, twenty four seven, day and night, all day, every day !! YEEEHAAAA !! For the last week at least..... Prior to that we were the worst affected I am sure, being the oldest most established suburb, we were the easiest to switch off, and so we received the brunt of the power cuts, but then one of our residents, who shall remain nameless, got his molars into ZESA, and hey presto !! Eureka !!!! Eureka !! Eureka !! It has been all the more amazing because HeeHoo went off to watch the rugby over the weekend and I was sure, positive, convinced, that we would have our normal power cuts, and that without him, in the dark for hours and hours, I would be a bag of nerves, a quivering mass of pulsating jelly !! It's not that I am nervous (well maybe just a bit) but I really do not like the dark. I like the quiet, I enjoy being on my own, but I do not like the dark and being on my own in the dark, is not very zesty!! HeeHoo has made sure that we are self sufficient without power from ZESA, we have generators, inverters, more re-chargeable "maglites" than the White House possibly, but its a purely state of mind. But in fact the description of "nervous" could be boiled down to "sheer unmitigated terror". I also manifests in my pooches, surely a Great Dane, a Pointer and a Jack Russell collectively, should garner that "pack" instinct and look after Mum, but no, its the "tail between the legs, hang dog special" every single time !! Eventually the only sane solution is to put them to bed, and face the problem, which usually does not last too long unless there is a real breakdown, thank goodness. Well, "not too long" is known to be anything from five hours to nine hours .... But we do feel for those folks on the other side of the Matsheumhlope, I can assure you. In fact we feel so bad ever time we turn on a light switch, or use the hair dryer, or boil the kettle, that we are contemplating going on a solidarity "Power Strike".... You know similar to a hunger strike ? A sympathy strike in keeping with our new found Unity approach !! Yes siree, I have broached it with several of my Suburban fellow tea drinkers and they all told me to get lost !! But thank you ZESA, for a week of glorious First World Life !! Tongue in cheek !! +++++++++++ GOSSIP COLUMM We recently went to a party and met up with a few ex Zimbos your readers may remember, including our daughters Wendy and Sally with husbands Mike and Henry, Ross Craig, Lara Tredgold, Karen and Mike Wilson, Fred and Jen Shiels, Sarah and Jono Armstrong were also there. Elizabeth French talks about the English composer Francis Bache and his piano concerto. Marimba Competition Friday 17 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 9.00 a.m. In the Academy's annual Marimba Competition schools will this year compete on the African National Anthem, Nkosi Sikeleli Africa - God Bless Africa. Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no admission charge. Wagner: Siegfried Acts II and III Friday 17 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 10.15 p.m. Siegfried has many of the elements of legendary tales throughout the ages, tasks, riddles and supernatural messages. The guileless hero who has never known fear, having re-forged Notung, slays Fafner as he guards the horde of gold, takes the Ring and Tarnhelm, encounters Wotan and shatters his spear before he finally passes through the magic fire to awaken Brünnhilde from her enchanted sleep. All this is thrillingly depicted in the Met's production and is fully matched by the glorious singing of Hildegard Behrens as Brünnhilde, James Morris as Wotan and Siegfried Jerusalem as Siegfried himself. Tickets: US$2.00/R15.00. Tchaikovsky Monday 20 July at 5.15 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall Another film in the BBC Great Musicians series. Entry by donation. Lunchtime Talk: Peter Rollason Thursday 16 July in Room 25 at 1.10 p.m. Entry by donation. Khachaturian: Spartacus (10 July) Friday 24 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. "The narrative of Spartacus centres on the conflict between the two main characters, Spartacus and the Roman general Crassus, and their lovers, the action framed by vast and spectacular military scenes. The magnificent dancing of the Bolshoi principals is very impressive and their stamina extraordinary when the choreography is so continuously athletic, the orchestra plays this often noisy score with great passion and feeling and the camerawork is excellent." [From The Penguin Guide] Tickets: US$2.00/R15.00. A three-course dinner is available to order at US$10.00. ACADEMY FESTIVAL WEEK All events by donation unless otherwise stated! Opening Concert Monday 27 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. The opening concert of the Academy's Festival Week features students, teachers and friends of the Academy including Brian Hartman, Sam Kaufman, Deon Marcus, Natascha Muller, Ursula Murray, Ineke te Velde and Kristin Whitehead in a wide variety of music. Bring your supper and enjoy it before... The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra Monday 27 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra is one of the most remarkable stories in recent music, a youth orchestra of international standard made up largely of street children. Sir Simon Rattle has called the system that produced it "the most important thing happening in classical music anywhere in the word" , and this DVD of a Salzburg Festival concert features Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition when the orchestra is expanded to monster proportions with 14 double-basses and the rest to match! In the Triple Concerto, Martha Argerich, no less, is the pianist with the Capu on bothers, Renaud and Gautier, the violinist and cellist. The concert is preceded by a documentary, School of Listening, which features the orchestra in a rehearsal of Mahler's First Symphony. Elizabeth French (piano) Tuesday 28 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. Elizabeth is currently spending a month teaching and assisting at the Academy. She completed an M.Mus. at the Royal Academy of Music, having earlier received a first class honours degree in music from Durham University. She was awarded the Frederic Jackson Memorial Prize on entry to the Academy and became the Meaker Fellow for the year 2005/6. Other awards include the title "Montreal International Music Camp Young Artist of the Year" in 2001. She has performed widely as both soloist and accompanist and has also recorded for the Channel 4 series Arrows of Desire. We're very privileged to have her at the Academy and I should add that she travelled to Zimbabwe at her own expense for which we are enormously grateful. Her recital will be a highlight of the week and the very generous programme is as follows: William Matthias: Toccata alla Danza (1961); Haydn: Sonata in A flat major, Hob.XVI/46; Leonard Bernstein: Touches (1981/83); Mendelssohn: Rondo Capriccioso, Op.14; Chopin: Berceuse; Prokofiev: Sonata No.3 in A minor, Op.28; Beethoven: 32 Variations in C minor, WoO80; York Bowen: Sonatina in C major, Op.144 Advance booking for this concert at the Academy or at the door from 7.00 p.m. on the night; tickets: US$5.00/R40.00 - free to Red Carpet members and members of PAB. The Peggy Morris Choral Competition Wednesday 29 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 9.00 a.m. Peggy Morris was very involved in choral music in schools and elsewhere for many years in Zambia and thereafter for a shorter time in Harare. Her daughter now lives in Bulawayo and she and her family have funded this competition, which will be an annual event at the Academy, in Peggy's memory. This year 15 schools have entered. Everyone is welcome to attend. Student Concert & Whitestone School Wednesday 29 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. A short concert by a range of Academy students will be followed by extracts from the recent Whitestone production of "The Phantom Express" with Andrew Lloyd Webber's music. Bring your supper and enjoy it before. Puccini: La Bohme Wednesday 29 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. This new film of Puccini's opera starring Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón has won rave reviews everywhere: "Succulently dramatic... a tribute to the stars' power." [The Times]; "Breathtakingly dramatic and emotional... Full to the brim with some of the best vocal talents of today." [Opera Now]; "The world's finest soprano-tenor team don't only sing with beauty and power, they can also act." [The Evening Standard]; "Beautifully sung all round." [The Observer]; "The lovers' sheer intensity and Dornhelm's cinematic vision make this one of the finest opera films ever - unmissable."[BBC Music]. There's really nothing to add except... don't miss it! Admission: US$2.00/R15.00 Concert Thursday 30 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. This concert will feature the Academy Singers conducted by Richard Hartnack; Donald Welsh (violin), Cynthia Pretorius (cello) and Deon Marcus (piano and viola) in a piano trio by Haydn and a string divertimento by Mozart; and Billy St.John (saxophone) and Elizabeth French (piano) The Phantom of the Opera Tuesday 28 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. "Phantom" is too well known to need any introduction and this is the 2004 film adaptation starring Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler which was widely acclaimed as the best performance yet:. A huge raspberry to the ZRP Traffic Section who constantly harass any member of the driving public who does not have red reflectors, white reflectors etc. on their crs. Well members of the driving public take note of this.... On the morning of Wednesday 8th July 2009 I noted a ZRP car (No. ZRP 4120) driving into the Traffic section grounds at the Drill Hall with all of the following defects :- No red reflectors, No white reflectors, No brake lights, No working tail lights, they were non existent and broken, and to top it all off all the Members of the ZRP in the car had no seat belts on. WOW......and they have the cheek to stop us and extort money out of the public for no rhyme or reason. ZRP get your own cars in order before pouncing on the members of the public. Many thanks for the wonderful Morning Mirror. +++++++ The City of Bulawayo must have the most valuable real estate in the world, in their wisdom they have valued my business property in the CBD area at US$1 500 000.00 (the value for insurance purposes is $200 000.00) and based on these charges they expect rates in the sum of US$500.43 a road levy of US$299.72 and various other charges amounting to just over $1 100.00 per month. We pay vehicle license fees, why should we pay a road levy, no road works have been done in our area for at least 4 years, the bins are not emptied and we take our rubbish to the City dump and pay Council fees for the privilege of doing so. Z.E.S.A. was forced by the Minister to reduce their charges and the Council should be forced to reduce their charges. We the business community should boycott all Council charges until a reasonable tariff is agreed with us. The new deposit fines are with immediate effect. Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena, warned that for some offences repeat offenders would have to appear in court, and could not simply pay a deposit fine at a police station. First offenders for the listed offences have the option of appearing in court, if they wish to plead not guilty or if they wish to bring forward mitigating evidence for a lower fine. If a question was asked "What do you think would be the most challenging but rewarding task to undertake in beleaguered Zimbabwe"? The answer would undoubtedly be "running a Frail Care Geriatric Home". There must be hundreds of Bulawayo citizens who have elderly parents who will one day need a peaceful, caring home in which to pass their final years of their lives. And yet no one will come forward. The present Trustees have served the Home for so many years now that they are in fact ready for a suite at the Edith Duly Nursing Home themselves. !! So come on all caring concerned citizens of Bulawayo ... WE NEED YOUR HELP... we just cannot do it alone. Come and make a difference to society. Sullivan Mariannhill Missionary Congregation celebrates 100 years The Catenian Association provided sponsorship to initiate a limited imprint of this book. This coincides with their own 100th Anniversary this year, and also the 100th Anniversary of the Mariannhill Missionary Congregation that evolved from a Trappist Monastery in Natal. The central figure is Father Odilo Weeger, CMM, well-known to almost everybody who has grown up or lived in Bulawayo or Matabeleland North, especially if they had to spend time in hospital as he was a dedicated visitor. His life and example touched countless lives. People were the focus of his life and work, and he took a genuine interest in the lives of an amazing number of people who can honestly say that he was their friend. He was one of the very last group of Missionaries allowed out of Germany before war broke out, and he arrived at Mariannhill, Natal, in 1938. The 100 years of the Congregation of Mariannhill Missionaries, and its founders give an inspiring example, and these missionaries have continuously done wonderful work in Africa and elsewhere throughout the world. The African origins and history of this Order make it unique, and full of challenge and excitement. They and their sister order have produced rich and visible fruits for their work here, and have contributed greatly to the enlightenment and empowerment of their students and followers. Father Odilo was one of those old-school priests, who were driven by a spirit of great dedication and self-discipline. Above all, they put their lives at the service of God and His Church. There are many other examples of good missionary and religious life, as well as martyrs of old and recent history, and yet each life, each person, each situation one comes across, is still totally unique. This story is about commitment, and describes a life that helps us to appreciate God's calling, one that Father Odilo heard and followed. His love for Creation made a deep impression on him, as he saw so many situations where the Creator simply had to be recognised and he had a special fondness for the Matopos. He served in several missions and parishes and founded Fatima and St Luke's Mission Hospitals, as well as numerous other schools and missions in Matabeleland. He was a pioneer of radio and television programmes in this country and an ecumenically active person who was acknowledged by the City of Bulawayo, Rotary, his own German government, the Boys Scouts Association and others. This book is available from The Catholic Bookshop at St Mary's Cathedral, or through the author, by e-mail: johnsull@gatorzw.com. ++++++++ In 1999 A new RJC committee was formed, headed by Mr. & Mrs. E Rensburg. The newly formed committee faced many challenges, the first one being the paving of the front entrance of the home, which was necessary due to the mud problem during the rainy season. This project was successfully completed. The next task which was accomplished was the repairing of the ceilings & doors of the home, due to the white ant problem. The next obstacle was the sinking of a second borehole due to the first one running dry, which was also successfully achieved. The committee found it necessary to build a gazebo which would be used for fund raising functions, such as Sunday lunches, which were well supported by the community & mainly functions for the resident senior citizens i.e.. Christmas & Birthday parties etc. The committee then decided to build a cold room to keep all the food that needed refrigeration, for the meals of the residents. Security was another main concern for the home, therefore Mr. Eric Rensburg took on the massive task of building a 2.2m high brick wall right around the home, which took two years to complete as all the bricks were molded on sight at the home by Mr. Rensburg & his team of workers. Present & Future Developments Eric Rensburg envisaged a great plan for the home to grow their own fresh fruit & vegetables on a fairly large scale, which once achieved could supply the residents with fresh fruit & vegetables necessary for our treasured senior citizens. The surplus fresh fruit & vegetables will eventually be sold to the community at large in a shop that is to be built on the RJC premises. The profit from the shop will help RJC with some of its running costs. Recently a massive reservoir with a capacity of 160 000 liters was built under the strict supervision of qualified engineers necessary for the intended irrigation system for the fruit & vegetable gardens. A third borehole including a pump was sunk to pump water into the reservoir required for the irrigation system. An electricity pole had to be erected for the purpose of supplying electricity to the borehole pump. The next major task was to prepare the ground for the planting of the fruit & vegetables which proved to be a mammoth task due to the amount of rocks & boulders in the ground. The use of an excavator, bulldozer & grader was required to complete the project of preparing the land for planting purposes. Future projects include the building of a laundry & a sick bay & the need to employ a qualified nurse to be available on the RJC premises 24hrs a day The RJC committee, the Matron & Staff of RJC & mostly the Senior Citizens of RJC would like to thank the community locally, regionally & internationally for all their support in the past, present & future. In Wild Honey, you will find comedy and tragedy in equal measure, as the Peeks share their lives with an assortment of wild animals, from a family of warthogs to the legendary honey badger - reputed to be 'the meanest animal in the world.' In these troubled times, Stone Hills has become more than a sanctuary. It is an island rocked by the turbulence that surrounds it, as thousands of farms all over Zimbabwe are being invaded, often violently, under Government's disastrous land policy. How much longer can they hold on? 'Wild Honey is irresistible, in turn heart-rending, funny and revealing, and will strike a chord with all who love Africa, its people and its wildlife.' There are few things in this life more difficult to experience than the loss of one's child. Jim Wallis, in WHO SPEAKS FOR GOD tells about a sad and terrifying incident that occurred during the tragic war in Sarajevo not too many years back. A reporter who was covering the violence in the middle of the city saw a little girl fatally shot by a sniper. The reporter threw down his pad and pencil and rushed to the aid of a man who was now holding the child. He helped them both into his car and sped off to a hospital. "Hurry, my friend," the man urged, "my child is still alive." A moment or two later he pleaded, "Hurry, my friend, my child is still breathing." A little later he said, "Hurry, my friend, my child is still warm." When they got to the hospital, the young girl was gone. "This is a terrible task for me," the distraught man said to the reporter. "I must go tell her father that his child is dead. He will be heartbroken." The reporter was amazed. He looked at the grieving man and said, "I thought she was YOUR child." The man replied, "No, but aren't they all our children?" I think that is one of the great questions of our age. Aren't they all our children? It is a question that deserves an answer. Aren't they all our children? Those who live under our roof and those who reside with another family? Those to whom we are related as well as those whom we have never known? Aren't they all our children? Those on our side of the border as well as those on the other side? Those of our nation no more or less than those of another? Aren't they all our children? Those who worship like us and those who worship differently? Those who look like us and those who do not? Aren't they all our children? The well-educated and the under-educated? The well- fed and the under-fed? Those who are secure and those who are at risk? Aren't they all our children? The highly valued and highly esteemed as well as the castaways and the lost? Aren't they all our children? Aren't they all our responsibility? ALL of them? Ours to nurture? Ours to protect? Ours to love? I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that the survival of our world hinges on the answer to that question. To say they are NOT all our children is to condemn the world to more struggle - family against family, group against group, nation against nation. Aren't they all our children? If we say yes, can we ever again pit them against each other? "If we have no peace," said Mother Teresa, "it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other." Aren't they all our children? ++++++ Crabby Old Man What do you see nurses? ........... .... What do you see? What are you thinking ......... when you're looking at me? A crabby old man, ............ ......... ......... ......... ........ not very wise, Uncertain of habit . with faraway eyes? Who dribbles his food ............ ......... ......... . and makes no reply. When you say in a loud voice ........... 'I do wish you'd try!' Who seems not to notice ........... ....... the things that you do. And forever is losing ........... ........ a sock or shoe? Who, resisting or not .......... lets you do as you will, With bathing and feeding ........... the long day to fill? Is that what you're thinking? ..... Is that what you see? Then open your eyes, nurse . you're not looking at me. I'll tell you who I am .......... as I sit here so still, As I do at your bidding, ......... as I eat at your will. I'm a small child of Ten ....... with a father and mother, Brothers and sisters ............ .. who love one another. A young boy of Sixteen .......... with wings on his feet. Dreaming that soon now ........... ... a lover he'll meet. A groom soon at Twenty ........... my heart gives a leap. Remembering, the vows ........... that I promised to keep. At Twenty-Five, now ............ .. I have young of my own. Who need me to guide ........... and a secure happy home. A man of Thirty ........... ... my young now grown fast, Bound to each other .......... with ties that should last. At Forty, my young sons ......... have grown and are gone, But my woman's beside me .......... to see! I don't mourn. At Fifty, once more, . babies play 'round my knee, Again, we know children . my loved one and me. Dark days are upon me ............ ... my wife is now dead. I look at the future ............ ... I shudder with dread. For my young are all rearing ......... young of their own. And I think of the years .. and the love that I've known. I'm now an old man ............ ..... and nature is cruel. Tis jest to make old age ............ ... look like a fool. The body, it crumbles ........... grace and vigour, depart. There is now a stone .......... where I once had a heart. But inside this old carcass ... a young guy still dwells, And now and again ............ .. my battered heart swells. I remember the joys ............ ..... I remember the pain. And I'm loving and living ............ ... life over again. I think of the years ... all too few ..... gone too fast. And accept the stark fact ....... that nothing can last. So open your eyes, people ............ ..... open and see. Not a crabby old man. Look closer ..... See . ME!! There may be no greater question for our generation. And how we answer that question will determine the shape of our world for years to come. Steve Goodier ++++
