COMING TO BULAWAYO: BRUCE KUHN
Dates: 10 July 2009 - THE GOSPEL OF LUKE
11 July 2009 - THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES
Venue: Byo Theatre
Time: 6:30pm for 7:00
Cost : R20.00
Tickets available at the Byo Theatre
Who is BRUCE KUHN BRUCE KUHN performed on Broadway in Les Misrables, in the National Tours of Chess and Cotton Patch Gospel and in the resident company of the acclaimed Actor's Theatre of Louisville in roles as diverse as D'Artagnan in The Three Musketeers and Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as The Gospel of Luke. The Gospel of Luke is the story of Jesus, memorized word for word from the Bible and told with the passion and surprise of an eyewitness account. The show premiered at the acclaimed Actor's Theatre of Louisville (one of America's largest professional theaters) to rave reviews and an extended run. The text is the Authorized (King James) Version, which takes to the stage like Shakespeare. The Acts of the Apostles is the story of the first church in the words of the first believers. Wearing modern clothing and using modern idioms, the actor captures the immediacy and relevancy of the first century stories, collected and edited by Luke as the sequel to his Gospel. The text is based on Eugene Peterson's vibrant translation The Message.

Verdi: Nabucco
Friday 10 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 10.00 p.m. Perhaps the best-known of Verdi's early operas, largely because of the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, Nabucco concerns the Biblical king Nebuchadnezzar and calls for some spectacular staging, not least the destruction of the Temple of Solomon. It calls for equally spectacular singing with the role of Abigail in particular known for its fearsome demands on the soprano. This Met production was mounted in 2001 for the centenary of Verdi's death and the New York Times noted that "everything is natural, songful, crisp and sonorous". Tickets: R10.00. A three-course dinner is available to order at US$10.00.

Soire Bon Vivant (11 July)

Wagner: Siegfried Acts II and III
Friday 17 July in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 10.15 p.m. Siegfried has many of the elements of legendary tales throughout the ages, tasks, riddles and supernatural messages. The guileless hero who has never known fear, having re-forged Notung, slays Fafner as he guards the horde of gold, takes the Ring and Tarnhelm, encounters Wotan and shatters his spear before he finally passes through the magic fire to awaken Brünnhilde from her enchanted sleep. All this is thrillingly depicted in the Met's production and is fully matched by the glorious singing of Hildegard Behrens as Brünnhilde, James Morris as Wotan and Siegfried Jerusalem as Siegfried himself. Tickets: R10.00.
