COMRADES HERE I COME !

The Comrades Marathon came early this year didn't it ? It was only when we got to Joburg on Sunday and we heard that Zimbabwean Stephen Muzhingi had won the race, that I even realised it had even been run.

Normally one is aware of the preparations for the race when one encounters masses of runners limbering up on every road in the country, and then the day after there are not quite as many, just the dedicated few masochists who make it off the couch.

So needing my usual five km jog rather badly on Monday evening, I sallied forth amongst the sundowner "dog walking set" who festoon the little place where we normally reside when visiting "She Who Must Sing"

It was only after the third sympathetic nod that I got, that I was aware that I really must have looked like one of the runners who had just run the 89 km Comrades Marathon the day before. !!

It dawned on me that the looks I was getting were possibly more congratulatory combined with sympathy, as I was feeling a tad stiff (after all I had pruned a bush and washed a dish which is pretty darn hard work !!)

So my grimaces on limbering up had been noticed and hence the admiring stares .... it was only then that I noticed that I had donned, quite accidentally of course, an old Comrades Tee shirt that She Who Must Run had given me several Comrades ago.

One never wears THIS years tee shirt of course, it must always be an old faded one from a decade ago, that shows that one is a REAL RUNNER !!

Rubbing my thighs (just slightly in a nonchalant sort of way) too had the desired effect from the next passers by, and I was convinced that someone even muttered "Well Done!" .....

Now my running gait is unusual I will admit, its kind of a cross between a shuffle and an ungainly lollop, but it does look somewhat like the gait of a person who had run 89 kms the day before.... which must account for all this glorious attention I was receiving.

I had seconded She Who Must Run several times at various races, including four Comrades I might add, with a great deal of pride !! And so I know exactly what a runner goes through the day after Comrades.

I have lovingly tended those bleeding feet of my baby girl several times now, and watched the pain in her eyes while rubbing those awfully abused leg muscles, so I have all those grimaces taped I assure you !!

As I glanced into a window in one of the houses I was "running" past, I noticed that I was looking pretty "Comrades-Like" in my old faded Comrades Tee shirt and the black lycra tights I had purloined from "She Who Must Sing's cupboard.

It was mighty cold and I was grateful for the extra stretchability that modern lycra has. Hopefully the fabric will have returned to its normal size by the time She Who Must Sing needs them again, maybe if I wash them in hot water ?

But back to my fetching silhouette in the window, possibly the legs were a little larger than those of the average runner ? But then, do these runners not wrap their legs in yards of crepe bandage to keep out the winter chills ? Or perhaps The Doggy walking crowd might think that my muscles were still in cramp from the race, hence that extra bit of bulkiness in the thighs ??

I thought with pride of my countryman Stephen Muzhingi, what a feat, what an achievement. If anyone chanced to ask if I knew him, or perhaps even if I had ever "run" with him, could I possibly tell an itsy bitsy little fib ? I mean, after all we have possibly run on the same soil, maybe even on the same road, well certainly in the same country at any rate !!

I am pretty sure I could have given Stephen Muzhingi a run for his money on the downhill Comrades race, I am pretty fast downhill after all. If you carried as much adipose tissue in your back pocket as I do, the sheer force of gravity alone makes one run downhill pretty fast !!

It is a well known fact that HeeHoo and I are pretty hot on our tandem downhill too. Our combined dead weight - precariously balanced on the Canondale's tiny tyres, makes us a terrifying combination on a downhill.

I mean we even passed Andy Lang once going downhill on one of the Tours De Falcon !! So do not underestimate my downhill running ability, it is legendary .

Oh yes, getting back to my "after Comrades limber up" - not all of it was pretense I hasten to assure you, some of it was quite true, I did have a few aches and pains. I had, after all twisted my knee during the City Clean Up last week. It was not while using a broom I hasten to add, the closest I came to handling a broom was when I handed one to HeeHoo.

It was when I had to clamber on the back of the truck with the KGVI Marimba Band that I twisted my knee. It was a hard morning, sitting on the back of the truck taking photographs of the 1000 or so workers cleaning the city, I was positively exhausted by the end of the morning !

Oh yes, I could get used to this sort of sympathetic adulation... . I passed another doggy walker and rubbed my poor aching thigh, maybe I will start training for next year's Comrades, I thought as I deftly leapt out of the way of a passing car traveling at five km an hour.

Yes indeed Comrades Marathon 2010, watch out here I come !!

BULAWAYO SIREN
For your info, the siren goes off every morning without fail!!!! Starting at 6:30, then 6:50 and finally at 7am....I know this for a fact as they're my 'warning' bells to get out of bed and ready myself for work!
Regards
Raquel Esof

CITY SIREN
Reading the latest Morning mirror, I reside in Famona, near St Francis Home / Hamilton, and hear this siren most mornings, probably 4 out of 5 days, and am told it is the siren emanating from the Sugar Refinery. Obviously depending on the way the wind is blowing, it is very distinct.

I may be wrong, but in the "ole" days when I was a boarder at Dominican Convent, we heard it every morning, as it coincided with wake up call at 6.30 and at 6.50 was the hostel bell to get down to the dining hall for breakfast.

Would be interesting to know if this theory is correct.
S.R.T.

Without fail it goes every morning at 6.30 and at 6.50. It is a railway siren and living in Hillcrest I hear it each day. It never misses and to within a minute or two it is in time with the BBC "pips"
As far as I can remember and I moved into this house in 1980 it has never stopped.

3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES
Zimbabwe's Stephen Muzhingi won the gruelling 89km Comrades Marathon between Pietermaritzburg and Durban on Sunday.

In an annual race normally dominated by Russian runners and this year attracting a field of 13 000, Muzhingi crossed the finish line in Durban in 5:23,27.

Defending champion Leonid Shvetsove of Russia was second, with South African Lucas Nonyana in third.
"It was a good race. I was focused and reacted very well to moves by my challengers. I did not experience any pain or cramps," the 33-year-old Muzhingi told SABC television after the race.
Muzhingi, who finished third in the 2008 and seventh the year before that, will pocket prize money of R220 000 and a gold medal for winning this year's event, which was first staged in 1921.

RASPBERRIES

We have gone far beyond "disagreeable thoughts towards Zesa" having now been without power for twenty eight days straight - and still counting, despite more meetings and countless telephone calls, we are still wondering if it will ever be restored again. My father-in-law' s house has been without power for three and a half months and twenty one fault reports later have finally brought one team to look at the fault and decide it wasn't their particular crew that could do anything about it - and still waiting. I realise many people are having the same problems with constant lack of power but this is past deplorable and the excuses are endless. Zesa have surpassed themselves with their colossal lack of service and 'passing the buck' seems to have become their mission statement.
Heads should roll.

CITY CLEAN UP

Dear Maggie,
I ask in fairness, that you please print this letter in your next mirror. I write this not only in my own defense but to explain a greater problem which you may not be aware of.

I was distressed to read your comment on the rubbish in the back alleys stating that 'the shops and restaurants who border these alleys, will not take responsibility for their own "patches" and the hideous health conditions which prevail in these alleys' and then your further suggestion that 'we should, as a community, refuse to eat at these establishments or to buy goods from these establishments, unless their access lanes are kept clean'.

I have run my business, Farm Fresh Vegetables for 24 years. We are situated in Robert Mugabe Way and have an alleyway from hell! I have a hideous, stinking pile of rubbish containing household refuse, babies nappies, beer cans and an assortment of trash that does not belong to myself or any of the surrounding businesses. To the guy in the 4 x 4 who dumped his black plastic bags last week at 6.30am on the pavement at Visions night club on the corner of Robert Mugabe and 13th Avenue, I saw you! I know who you are! Maybe we should start a name and shame campaign?

I have a back gate which is kept permanently locked and the refuse that is generated from my business is neatly stored inside my locked gates, sealed in black refuse bags. I regularly spray the outside and inside of my business (at a large expense) against the plague of flies and cockroaches. The rats are now so large that they probably pose a physical threat to us, but we bravely fight them too. I use my own transport to remove my rubbish and have also paid for the service of having it done for me. We have joined up with our neighbors, Walters Bakery and Cheeseman, whose business and working environments also suffer from this daily stench, to pay to have our whole alley cleaned up.

The very next day, the rubbish heaps re-appear. The problem is not only residents dumping their personal trash in the city alleys but we know for fact that the people who walk around with yellow push bins collecting rubbish and emptying front pavement bins dump their rubbish back into the alleys. I have confronted the 'yellow push bin' cleaning lady who uses our alley and requested that she stop doing this. I have continually complained over the years, both verbally and in writing to the City Health Department.

My persistence finally resulted in a visit (a few months ago) from a senior representative from City Health. He acted quickly and sent our offender to see me. I again asked that she desists from her practice of using my back door step as her dumping ground. It's obvious to all, that this has not stopped.

The fight against the rubbish heaps is an ongoing battle for us. THE LITTER IN THE ALLEY IS NOT OURS! I take full responsibility for the rubbish from my business and will continue the DAILY battle to clean up what's not ours. My family participated in the 'clean up campaign' last week and while we worked in another area of town, I thank the teams who in turn worked in our area.

We have had years of stress and strain in keeping our business doors open but we have prevailed. Your suggestion to boycott our businesses is potentially very damaging and your reasons are unsubstantiated.

Your mother was certainly correct in saying that "god helps those who help themselves" but sometimes people need the help of others as the battle ground is just too large for one man to face alone. PLEASE, DO NOT BOYCOTT OUR BUSINESS. Do not hold us responsible and penalize us for what is not ours.

My mother used to say 'do not judge a book by its cover'. Please, now that you are aware of a much greater problem, be sympathetic and support us.

Together, as a community, we can sort out the problem!

TUITION ( MATHS, PHYSICS, AND CHEMISTRY) AND IT CONSULTANCY

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with O or A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help. Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution. I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.

I have some goldfish ponds in my garden in Malindela and I recently brought up some fantails to strengthen the genes of my existing fish, but unfortunately they introduced a virulent disease which wiped out the lot, including my original lot. The only pet shop in Bulawayo had some fish, but were asking an outrageous price of R60 each whereas in SA they sell at around R10. Being a pensioner, this price is way beyond what I can afford, so I was wondering if there was anybody here who would have an over stocked pond who could sell me about ten smallish fish to replace my lost ones.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Adrian Lendrum (Home Tel :245079)
