Do you remember whay back when, there was an advertising campaign to buy local goods - was it "Buy Rhodesian" ? We then desperately needed to get our economy back on track in the sixties and seventies ? We forsook Kellogs Cornflakes to eat the perfectly acceptable Willards Cornflakes. We forsook nice soft loo paper to use the more economical but abrasive re-cycled loo paper. We gave up Marmite and Bovril (they never found a local equivalent of that ! We started to eat Cashel Valley jams and tinned fruit instead of Koo and Robertsons. Nothing was imported except by the Hardy Sanctions Busters !! We grew our own, canned our own, made our own. The first matches were a joke, but they got the hang of them. The candles were strange but we got used to them, in fact you get used to everything after a while and now we love our local products. Who needed Nescafe when there was Mr Dickins and Ellis Brown ? Who needed English Breakfast tea when there was Tanganda. Who needed Roses Lime Juice when there was Mazoe ? Sadly now all of those precious familiar goods have all but disappeared off the shelves, but we have it on good authority that they WILL COME BACK - and at a lower price than the imported equivalent. But its up to us to make it work, we must no longer buy OMO - we must look or the local Lever Brothers or Stanchem products - like good old Surf - who cares what the packaging looks like, it will improve when business improves. And besides 'THINK GREEN" all that fancy silver packaging with twenty seven colours is false economy and is destroying the eco system !! Go to Solomons and buy some of the Stanchem washing powder, the packaging is interesting but its cheaper and works just as well. Give up that Revlon and that Max Factor, lets keep the local wheels of industry turning for goodness sake. Support people who have made a stand here and who are prepared to continue to make a stand. Buy the excellent Kigelia beauty products. They have a brand new beautiful look and are now obtainable in abundance once again at Eley Education. The Teasdale Family has been here in Zimbabwe forever and before they export their entire range, get your share of the action !! Phone Marike on 66703 or e mail her on eley@yoafrica. com and find out more about this superb natural, locally grown, locally manufactured, skin care range. Don't have your car serviced down south any more on your next holiday. Give the local auto people a chance. I had my precious Taurus sorted out at Dulys and I was so impressed. They could not do enough for me. They fixed the car most professionally , even found my wheel spanner that had disappeared some years ago under a seat , and called for an after sales service confirmation chat !! I feel so guilty now when I buy goods outside of Zim or by imported goods, knowing that every purchase I make is probably doing some poor fellow out of a job !! OK I admit, I have not made a foray into a local dress shop for many years now, but when I was a "famous" TV personality Truworths and Edgars would lend me numerous outfits and I will always be grateful for that. So Zimbabweans BUY ZIMBABWEAN !! Lets make our industry work again, lets get those factories open, those thousands of people employed again. Lets get the dollars pouring into the country instead of pouring out of the country. I remember the slogan now ' LET US GO FORWARD TOGETHER " !!!!! +++++++ 2) NOTICES ALL SUBURBS RESIDENTS. My first reaction was of horror, a week ? maybe two weeks without power ? The horror stories abound about ZESA, bribery, corruption, tactical delays, no spares, no transport .... well I have nothing but giant bouquets for ZESA or ZEDC as they are now known. Within half an hour a team arrived, secured the flailing wires, disarmed the smoking sub station, and disappeared in a cloud of dust !! I mentally started moving deep freezes and fridges to various friends homes and cold rooms, and with our trusty chain saw, set about disentangling the tree from the wires. The Neighborhood gardeners arrived in droves, hoping to stock up on winter firewood, and within a couple of hours, a once magnificent but elderly Jacaranda was unceremoniously carved into giant stumps and laid to rest. (Margot came and patted it tenderly, feeling its pain... ) Then to my astonishment ZESA arrived again with giant coils of wire and set about stringing five layers of power across a forty meter gap, in the most efficient manner. They need to be loudly applauded as their tools are dismal, working by the light of their dilapidated truck, this courteous group of Gentlemen (we are now all firm friends and always will be) using a fair amount of sticki- stuff and ingenuity, brought the suburb back to life and 9 hours later, they went off to yet another call in Hillside. Full marks to you ZEDC, you all deserve medals. +++++++ JACARANDAH HOUSE I Would like to thank most sincerely the good folk who have responded and have phoned to say they are rallying round to get their friends all involved and will get back to me. Also for those who have already dropped all sorts of useful things with me. We hope that this will become a monthly event. +++++ LATANA This is a designated, invasive weed. After spending some time cutting this pest from personal properties and public spaces several of us Bulawayo residents and Matobophiles would appeal to all residents to take action against that lovely ???? flowering Lantana camara that they have in their gardens, on their verges and as apparent 'safe' hedges. In the case of the last it is relatively easy to get through and they are false security. If everyone would make the effort we would remove the chance of massive reseeding and take the burden off the few. We would remind you that you can be fined if the plant is found growing on your property and at this time local authorities may jump on the chance of yet another cash cow, although they will need to get their houses in order first! ++++++ The Lounge' - monthly open mic nights at the Art Grove Cafe in the National Gallery, Bulawayo. next one is MAY 8th, 2009 7pm start A creative hub for the artistic community here in Bulawayo and beyond. Bulawayo has always been justifiably proud of its clean and tidy image. That, along with its beauty, is what used to set us apart from the other towns and cities. But today you wouldn't think so. Isn't it time we reclaimed our city from all the neglect and filth? After all it is OUR city. If you agree then I'm hoping you will be excited to hear about our new initiative to clean up Bulawayo. We are going to have a Clean Up Bulawayo Challenge Day on May 16th, 2009 and what better place to start then in our own Khumalo constituency. We have already approached the schools and are expecting a great turnout from them. But we also need the companies to get involved which is why we are appealing to you and your company to help in any way you can. This is the perfect opportunity to start with a cleaner and greener future. Why not make this the day that your company starts recycling? So how can you help? Well, the most obvious way would be to organise your staff into Clean Up Teams (10 or so people per team if possible) and get them out there cleaning up the rubbish. This is a hands-on exercise and I will be there myself working alongside everyone else. We are only talking about a morning's work - but what a difference one morning can make - so please encourage your staff to do the right thing. It would be helpful if these teams could be as self-sufficient as possible, i.e. with all cleaning equipment, etc. And they can get their families and friends involved - the more the merrier. We really want to make a difference so we need to get as many people out there as possible. Perhaps you could also challenge other companies to join in. If you don't have the staff perhaps you could help with equipment. We need vehicles and drivers or if you would prefer to donate cash, so that we can buy items (list as attached) All donated equipment left over, will be used for future clean-up operations and by the City Council. All donations will be recognised. We would like you to be imaginative and creative in coming up with a clean up slogan that will be used in future clean up projects. You may perhaps you have ideas we haven't even thought of. If neither staff nor donations are possible then, please may we ask you to clean up around your premises. Make it neat and tidy and challenge your neighbours to do the same What you need to know When: Saturday 16th May, 2009. We plan on cleaning from 8am until about midday. Venue: Everyone must meet at the City Hall, Bus car park, at 7.45 am. That's when you'll find out which area your team has been allocated. There will be a prize for the most "enthusiastically cleaned" area. Deadline to confirm your company's participation and donations: 15th April, 2009, in this regard please contact one of the three below. Danielle: 0912 929580 Stella: 0912 406 686 Ceri: 011 613 855 e mail - byosouth@yahoo. com We will also be asking you to complete the attached Indemnity Form by this date. Whatever you decide to do I know the spirit of Bulawayo will rise up and make a difference. I look forward to seeing you all there and thank you in advance for taking on this challenge. Using multi-use terminals will allow the airport to be more efficient in the use of existing infrastructure, minimizing the dependence on construction of more new buildings to create capacity. Like other international airports with multi-use terminals, the international and domestic descriptors of the terminals will fall away at OR Tambo International Airport. "There will still be two terminals, which will in future be known as Terminal A and Terminal B," Acsa said in a statement issued last week. Terminal A will extend from the Central Terminal Building (CTB) atrium to the north - previously the international terminal - and Terminal B will extend south - previously the domestic terminal. "For the foreseeable future the check-in counters in the existing international departures hall will continue to be used for international flights only, while the multi-use CTB departures facility will be used by both international and domestic airlines allowing those airlines with domestic and international flights to use the same check-in counters," Acsa said. Implications for passengers Passengers and visitors will have to know which terminal their airline of choice is operating from, and should obtain this information at the time of booking their tickets. To assist them the airport will be putting up temporary signs that show which airlines operate out of each departure terminal. "Passengers and visitors are advised that signage in and around the terminal will in the future no longer refer to domestic and international terminal," Acsa said. "Signs will refer only to Terminal A or Terminal B." Airline check-in counter moves At the beginning of April 2009 when the new multi-use departures hall in Terminal B opens in the CTB some airlines serving international routes will move into the new facility. Among them are South African Airways which will process both international and domestic passengers from the new facility. Other airlines that will also be moving to the new facility include: SA Express and SA Airlink (which, like SAA, will process both international and domestic passengers from their counters) UM - Air Zimbabwe MD - Air Madagascar WB - Rwandair Express TC - Air Tanzania QF - Qantas CX - Cathay Pacific MS - Egypt Air MK - Air Mauritius Check-in counter renumbering The changes to the terminal naming and the multi-use terminal will necessitate the changing of check-in counter numbers in both departure terminals. They will have an alphanumeric numbering system, with a three digit number being prefaced by A or B, depending on which terminal it is located in. The counters in Terminal A (currently international departures) will be numbered from the south to north and those in Terminal B (currently domestic departures) will be numbered from the CTB to the south. "The existing counters in Terminal B will be renumbered in preparation for the opening of the new facility at the beginning of April," Acsa said. This has "created the perfect window any country can have" for investors and the business community to initiate activities in Zimbabwe. This was the view shared by the Zimbabwean minister for Economic Planning and Investment Promotion, Elton Mangoma, at a forum on doing business in Zimbabwe held at financial advisory services firm KPMG in Johannesburg. "The private sector must play a pre-eminent role in getting Zimbabwe moving again. We have got to re-examine the private sector as partners. The Zimbabwean government must mingle and consult with the private sector and ensure that their concerns are dealt with." Furthermore, the scrapping of the Zimbabwean dollar has led to one of the most liberal exchange control regimes in the world with the US dollar and the South African Rand acting as anchor currencies. It is yet to be seen which will emerge as the dominant currency. There is no urgency to re-introduce the Zimbabwean dollar, he said. Business opportunities exist in a vast number of sectors in Zimbabwe, including agriculture, mining, tourism, manufacturing, information technology, infrastructure development and financial services. The government has stimulated the process by introducing the Short Term Emergency Recovery Programme (STERP) designed to target production. The aim is to have industry operating at 60% of capacity by the end of the year. Industry is currently operating at less than 10% of its capacity. The 'lost decade' has meant that in many sectors the country has fallen behind in its growth trajectory. Although potential donors have been looking at Zimbabwe largely from a humanitarian standpoint, they have recently agreed to assist with the strengthening of public finance management systems which they believe are currently not strong enough to ensure targeted spend. "Zimbabweans might also be a touch too optimistic about the rate of the economic turnaround and we therefore need to manage their expectations, " he said. It is expected that in three weeks the World Bank and International Monetary Fund will have formalised their position on Zimbabwe. "In addition, Zimbabwe must be food self-sufficient by 2010. This is the minimum and it is achievable. We are not necessarily talking about a surplus that can be used for cattle feed, but about human consumption of food," said Mangoma. Also speaking at the forum, Brian Njikizana, a partner at KPMG Zimbabwe, noted that "business opportunities are arising in Zimbabwe through policy changes driven by government. These opportunities will be enhanced by the Zimbabwean government's decision to privatise and commercialise some of its parastatals. The commercialisation of public utilities will create opportunities for re-tooling and recapitalisation" , he said. Mangoma also urged South African companies to re-capitalise Zimbabwean based subsidiaries. "Where you are a parent company, please recapitalise subsidiaries in Zimbabwe. Now is the time. Whoever is strong [in Zimbabwe] now, will be very strong in the future. Zimbabwe also needs lines of credit and extended credit terms. Let's extend 90 day terms to 180 day terms, which companies can do. Companies might see this as risky, but the South African government has been asked to guarantee credit lines to Zimbabwe," he said. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with a bag of potato chips and a six-pack of root beer (iron brew in SA context) and started his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old woman. She was sitting in the park, just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the old lady looked hungry, so he offered her some chips. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. Her smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered her a root beer. Again, she smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word. As twilight approached, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave; but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old woman, and gave her a hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever. When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, "What did you do today that made you so happy?" He replied, "I had lunch with God." But before his mother could respond, he added, "You know what? She's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen!" Meanwhile, the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. Her son was stunned by the look of peace on her face and he asked, "Mother, what did you do today that made you so happy?" She replied! "I ate potato chips in the park with God." However, before her son responded, she added, "You know, he's much younger than I expected." Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime! Embrace all equally! Have lunch with God ....... bring chips. +++++++++ "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can."
