Try a I may !!! .... it is impossible ... after al I am a member of that strange breed "A Zimbabwean" Come on admit it !! Does it come to you easily ? It is such an amazing wonderful invention ... are you able to just "bin" such an incredible invention ? ....the ziplock bag after just one use ? Yes I know all about hygiene, but as I said, I am a Zimbabwean !! Here in Johannesburg I look at my used ziplock bags quite tenderly !! I could not possibly throw them away while they are still remotely usable.... I wash them tenderly, stick them upside down on the scullery wall to drip dry as Deb York taught me ... and use them again and again at least until the zip does not lock any more !! We are a nation of re-cyclers - we Zimbabweans. "Waste not want not" Mother always used to say, God Bless her cotton socks. At home in Bulawayo I have absolutely no qualms about throwing them away.... I know our natural re-cycling team will come into force without even thinking twice... Mama Lucy, wife of the Legendary Charlie of the Famous Chocolate Cakes, was all too happy when I threw my plastic band ziploc ags away. She (Mrs Charlie) had a "TUCK SHOP", which is an informal shop where one does not pay tax, VAT , rent or any of the overheads of a formal shop. Mama Lucy aka Mrs Charlie would make her way happily to outside the Seventh Day Adventists School in Suburbs, where she would ply her wares each breaktime (recess) and at the lunch break. Supercools .... a peculiarly Zimbabwean invention .... these are small plastic sleeves filled with delicious green, red or gold syrup, hermetically sealed and frozen and these were quite the most popular items in Mama Lucy's store. She would freeze them in our deep freeze, quite oblivious to the fact that I might need freezer space !! However we made compromise and HeeHoo bought her and Charlie their own freezer which made life a lot easier. Corn curls were the next most popular item, and here the spurned ziploc bags came into their own. mama Lucy would buy a giant bag of corn curls and then carefully count out corn-curls into a zip loc bag and they sold like hot cakes. Popcorn too was cooked and sold in those bags, and the good thing about it all was they (now in their sixth or seventh time of usage !!) were never tossed casually on the side of the road, they were far too valuable to waste but would be taken home for sure for further use I am quite sure. We had also purchased for Mamma Lucy .... a supermarket trolly ... with which she moved her tuck shop from home to the school. We purchased this item from one of the kindest men in Bulawayo, the always generous Hylton Solomon. Hylton was always the first person sought when free goodies were needed for fetes, charitable events and fund raisers. He (Hylton) and HeeHoo in fact seemed to be on the top of everyones wish list for donations, God Bless them both for their many years of benevolence to the Community. Sadly however the Formal Sector of the Business Community in Zimbabwe is now unable to make provision for the generosity of days gone by. Those shops, businesses and companies who were the backbone of all charitable events, school tours, club outings, fund raising events, are now totally unable to make a living let alone make contribution to the community as in the past. The informal sector not the formal sector, has managed to survive the Zimbabwe Holocaust which has insidiously and irreverently destroyed the economy of the country. Very few shops and businesses have managed to stay on their feet. Instead the informal entrepreneurs now have control of thee economy. Gone is the verve and enthusiasm of the old established businesses. now the bright young folk with guts, verve and an unerring entrepreneurship, have taken hold of the economy, and they must now take over the reins of the fabric of our society. I was the Fund Raising Guru of Bulawayo once upon a time. C.E.O.s used to cringe when they heard I was on the phone, they would long for salvation, but I was relentless in my pursuit. I remember well the king folk who never let me down when I was on the scrounge for one charity or another. Charles Wawn, bless him, never flinched, the Treger/Monarch Empire - Berwick Davies, John Pritchard, Hamish Watson, the cxcxcxc always gave without blanching except on their balance sheets, the Meilkles family, the Moxons via Bob Slatter uncomplainingly and endlessly gave to the hundreds of "causes" that Bulawayo manufactured daily. The two Brendans - Beaumont and Mitchell, Raphael Chitrin, the Boys from Power Sales - the Hunt Brothers, the Blatch Boys, the Edgars Team all endlessly gave and gave and gave to the community unmitigatedly, without flinching thank you to all of you for loving and caring for our demanding community. Was it worth it ? Did you make a difference ? Only time and history will tell ... but you did it and you need to be lauded and praised for your unselfish spirit and for the love of you fellow man .... Getting back to my Ziploc bags however ... I am just as challenged to throw away tin foil, I have to force myself not to wash it, smooth it out and re-use it !! And the fat that one renders in ones frying pan ??? Throw it away ?? Never. Mother could make a pound of Holsum last a whole year when we were young and struggling. Maybe the World could learn a tip or two from this strange breed... The Zimbabwean.... we have a very peculiar but distinguished Carbon Footprint and I dare you to emulate us ! +++++++++++ 2) NOTICES BULAWAYO THEATRE CLUB presents "SANTA IN SPACE" directed by Kelly Bentley A traditional pantomime for the whole family with our own unique flavour.. Calling all civic leaders, businessmen, pastors and farmers. God has spoken. There is a way for the church to transform the nation NOW! Be part of it... VENUE: Word of Life Church, Robert Mugabe Rd, Bulawayo DATE: 15 November 2008 TIME: 9:30am-3pm ADMISSION: Free The Programme includes: Worship The Church in Context The Farming God's Way story The Prophetic Call to the Church Communion Call to feed the Nation Practical Training and Equipping Prayer As I survey the state of our nation, I believe that the Lord's particular concern and compassion is directed towards the poor and the hungry who, in a general sense, are the ones suffering the most in these times of crisis. There is a worldwide food shortage, exacerbated by the rush for the production of bio-fuels. There are very few agricultural inputs in the nation, and what fertiliser is available is so expensive that it makes food production unviable. We will have the begging bowl out again, with all its detrimental effects, but the indications are that even then there will be a serious shortfall of staple foods. The Lord has given us a wonderful way to steward our soil, water and other resources so that we are able to effectively produce food entirely his way. We call it Farming God's Way (FGW) and it is totally rooted in God's word and also constitutes the entrance point of God's way for rebuilding our nation as introduced in Isaiah 58. We have a dream that if we, the wider body of Christ, humble ourselves together in unity and turn to God wholeheartedly and seek his face, and also go and apply FGW faithfully with the little we have, the Lord will feed the nation, through his church this year. This will create a wonderful platform, from which the church can speak into the nation about God's way of rebuilding the broken walls. Please make an effort to come and if you can't please enter into all prayer. Please find attached some of the background of what the Lord has been doing in the lead up to this significant time in our nation's history and some guidelines of how to pray and prepare. But your latest adventure would elicit real concern on the serious dilemma of micturition- in-a-traffic- jam, and I know your readers (the ladies, that is) would really feel for you in your agony. Perhaps we should all make a plan and be better prepared for such eventualities and maybe share a few possible solutions. I was reminded of one rather ingenious contraption that I saw advertised in an American journal. A very neat open-banana- shaped plastic receptacle designed especially for needy ladies in "difficult situations". Unfortunately, I don't have details but perhaps your US- based daughter might be able to help with this. The second rather unique device, that I came across whilst browsing through one of those fascinating "Sky Mall" catalogues that you find in your seat pocket on airplanes, was "the perfect mat-and-tray- restroom" , capable of holding up to two gallons of liquid! Really designed for puppies, made from "antimicrobial porous material - its composition helping to prevent unpleasant odours", I'm sure it could be easily adapted for humans in distress. Of course there are always the more conventional Adult Pampers, and it's easy enough to slip the odd one or two in the glove compartment for a long journey or traffic jam. Happy future traveling, Margaret! And Hug(gie)s galore from Dorothy B. +++++ When HeeHoo is not looking, have a small hole drilled in the floor of the vehicle, at your feet, approx 2 cm diameter. If necessary plug this with a shaved-down cork. Cover this handiwork with a mat. Carry in the vehicle a suitable size funnel which can be placed in position when the need arises. Attached to the outlet of the funnel is a piece of tubing, long enough to reach and fit into the hole in the floor. Carry a good supply of wet wipes for use in appropriate places. Remember to replace cork after use - especially in wet weather. Q.E.D. ++++++++ Our grateful thanks to Lee and Graham York and their beautiful baby from Bots, for taking in five stranded Zimbos last week. Such kindness from you, we were so touched. Also our grateful thanks to RustyHat from Up North who ferried passengers home safely. Bless you all. ++++++ Dear JAG, I read with interest the letters and article that appear on the Zimbabwe News sites. I follow the developments there daily, and am fascinated with the rapidity of the decline of the Zim dollar. I thought the following calculation may add a touch of dark humour to things. Apologies in advance for any miscalculations, and hope that there is space to add it to your publications. The web placed the current value of the Zim dollar at 5 billion to the US (bank rate). Considering that the currency has been revalued twice, you have to add 13 zero's after this. That is a staggering 50 to the power of 21, or 50 sextillion dollars to the US dollar, in "old" currency. The average thickness of a bank note is approximately 0.1 mm thick. The question is then, how high would the stack of notes be to buy one US dollar? If you used 50 dollar notes (the most common of the larger denominations in stable economies), then the stack would be 1 to the power of twenty mm high. Convert that to kilometers, then the stack would be one to the power of 14 km high, or 100 trillion kilometers high!! Considering that the sun is approximately 153 million km from Earth, the stack of 50 dollar bills would reach the sun and back 700 000 times!! Eish! Andrew Quick New Zealand. +++++++++ MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED ON 6 AUGUST 2008 CONTACT MARCELLE MEREDITH ON 011-907-3590 OR 083 212 3465 ZIMBABWE NATIONAL SPCA APPEAL The Zimbabwe National SPCA (ZNSPCA) remains operational and has recently been instrumental in the rescue of animals in two shocking cases. In each instance, animals had been left to starve. Both cases will result in prosecutions which means that the ZNSPCA will need to care for all these animals in the interim. Yet the situation in Zimbabwe remains dire: the ZNSPCA land lines remain out of order and a bag of dog food costs 4 trillion dollars (400 "new dollars"). An urgent appeal is made for the support of the ZNSPCA through the ZIMHELP scheme, operated by and through the National Council of SPCAs in South Africa. The first case was a race-horse training facility housing 6 horses. The second was a security company housing over 300 dogs. With the full co-operation of the Zimbabwe Police, the horses were impounded. Sadly two of them, Summer Ford and Dutch Ski, had to be euthanased as they were so diseased that it was not humane to keep them alive. 110 dogs were confiscated from a security company. ZNSPCA Inspectors are camped on site to ensure the welfare of the remaining animals. Of the impounded animals, 18 had to be euthanased immediately to prevent further suffering. Some of the dogs were so weak that they could not stand. Despite the current dire social and economic situation in Zimbabwe, the public has been generous with donations of hay, shavings, dog and horse food. The upkeep of two of the former racehorses has been sponsored by two caring individuals. Appreciation is expressed to the SPCA in Harare for providing a kennel block where the animals in the most pitiful condition can be cared for. These two cases are shocking. Thank goodness there remains an active SPCA movement in Zimbabwe whose staff remain alert to cases of cruelty or neglect and who continue to act in the best interests of animals of all species. This despite the dire overall situation in Zimbabwe: - the number of animals being brought in for euthanasia increasing as an inevitable result of the economy. Few can afford to feed pets as a bag of dog food - if available - costs more than the minimum monthly wage. The cost of any form of veterinary care, including sterilisation is prohibitive, adding to the burden of the SPCA in Zimbabwe. The ZNSPCA in conjunction with Harare and Bulawayo SPCAs has embarked on a sterilisation programme. It is foolhardy for owners to breed their animals under the current circumstances yet desperate individuals have tried to sell puppies on the roadside. Inspectors impound puppies on a daily basis. Not least, avoiding the use of fireworks and ensuring that their companion animals are safe indoors in the event of any fireworks activity in the area. Ensuring that vaccinations are up to date, boarding kennels or house-sitters booked well in advance and a back-up plan in case anything whatsoever goes wrong. Please spare a thought for animals that experience unusual noises, greater activity and many more visitors over the festive season. These can be confusing, even terrifying. Safety of children, visitors and animals is paramount. Tragic instances have occurred because children or visitors have been left alone with animals. If it means keeping pets in a secure room during festivities, this may be a solution. Make sure that festive treats for humans are kept well out of the reach of animals. Chocolate, for example, contains an ingredient that is poisonous to dogs. Wrappers and wrappings can lodge in animals' throats and cause them to choke. This includes being vigilant with candles, balloons or any other decorations or party props. Keep it tidy and keep it safe! Festivities are all well and good but it is often best to keep animals out of the fun. Please advise children that dressing pets up in funny hats or costumes can upset the animals, cause discomfort and may lead to fear-biting. We often hear "My children can do anything to the dog" and then we hear "I don't know what came over the dog. It has never bitten before" when we hear of a Christmas costume being put on the dog, a prank gone wrong or a pet that simply had too much. Treat them with care and respect. +++++ THE BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION DEEPLY REGRETS THE MONTHLY INCREASE IN ITS SUBSCRIPTIONS, BUT NEEDS MUST. On a serious note on Sunday morning I picked up a young cross breed of about 5 months who was 'screaming' outside on the Magpie/ Southway intersection in Burnside. Took her to the SPCA and have been contacted as they suspect she has Rabies, I am waiting for confirmation on her results. The Government Vet has been informed but I actually lured her into the car down by Whitestone School! Please be very careful and check that your own dogs rabies are up to date, advise children to not approach strange dogs etc. Have been informed strange behaviour especially the screaming she was presenting is one of the first symptoms. ++++++ FETE........ This will be the first time in their lives that these children will have experienced a "PARTY" with music, cakes, biscuits and all the things that make up a festive celebration - even Santa will be in attendance! A number of people have indicated that they would like to contribute, but haven't known what is needed. Well, here's the list! Castor Sugar, flour, eggs, oil and icing sugar for 15 cakes. Flavouring would ring the changes on plain vanilla! (If you would like to bake, that will ease our "to do" list). Sweets, biscuits and juice (cordials) would be most welcome. May I take this opportunity to thank the wonderful public of Bulawayo who have already joined us in this project - we look forward to giving Betty's Babies "A CHRISTMAS TO REMEMBER" Sincerely The Rotary Club of Bulawayo South email: leila@netconnect. co.zw ++++++ HELP!!! The adult one was daily scriptures and readings, and then there was the children's booklet, with stories of "Billy and Bunty", and a little character called "Mousy". I have searched high and low for an original children's booklet, I vividly remember being read the stories at my aunts home (66 Windermere Road, Hillside). I was hoping maybe you knew of someone who may have kept them for whatever reason, I do believe they were exclusively Rhodesian, and no-one here in SA seems to know anything about them. I need to get hold of a children's booklet. If memory serves me, they were about 10cm x 10cm, and in black and white. The covers had a boarder of tiny flower creepers, AND THIS DESIGN IS WHAT I NEED TO GET HOLD OF. I really hope you can help. Tommy Morrison was a Dentist who had a practice in Bulawayo and died in 1988-ish but Bridget stayed on until 2005 and evidently left Zim with nothing but her suitcase. She went to live with her daughter Alison in Portland, Oregon before settling In Ireland. I am trying to find out any info/stories/ who their closest friends were etc. Apparently Tommy was much older than Bridget. Their daughter Alison attended Rosebank Convent in JHB. I know this sounds odd but there is a big family drama/ secret/conspiracy that I have just stumbled upon in Ireland and I am trying to fit pieces of the puzzle together.
