Fort Knox as we lovingly call our home, is hopefully impregnable, and we certainly proved it last night. "HeHoo must Poitkje" had said earlier in the evening, that we should get lessons on how to get into the house, now that Charlie was no longer there, and he must have cast some juju on us with that statement !! Yes we had a remote control to open the electric gate, yes we had a key to the front door, but what we had not counted on was the power cut..... Fortunately Precious, the oldest of my four new beautiful daughters was there (as Charlie had always been) and she laughingly let Tweedledumb and Tweedledee into the house.... Precious also had a torch which was most useful in getting the generator started, but HeeHoo noticed it was perilously close to empty (it never would have been with Charles in Charge). And so the fun began ...where was the diesel ? ... where was the funnel to pour the diesel into ? ...where was a cloth to loosen the cap of the diesel container ?.... With fumes belching furiously, and HeeHoo (after a very festive birthday party) valiantly trying to refuel the Genny, I set about feeding the eight Kriel Canines and Felines !! Nosh time is usually three p.m. and it was now well after nine, so they were pretty sulky, but the noise from the generator (which resides in their bedroom) was spooking them, so food was flying everywhere and not much was going into empty rumbling tummies !! The wind was uncharacteristicall y tearing around the house as if the Devils of Sod were laughing at us, and SLAM went the door between the kitchen and the rest of the house...... HeeHoo was now thoroughly disenchanted with domestic chores, the guard was outside waiting for his tea and peanut butter sandwich, and the door was firmly and vindictively closed. No amount of tugging and lock picking would loosen the lock, and so a recce of Fort Knox was undertaken by the light of the only torch we could find. It was a torch that we got from "SheHoo must Run", who has medical connections .. it was a torch used by surgeons to look at people's tonsils and into their eardrums, and it was the only one we could find in the kitchen !! By this tiny beam we tried all known means of entry into Fort Knox .... the only person who had ever managed to break into our house successfully, had been hunter, safari legend and tracker, one Chris Hallamore, but things had changed in Zimbabwe since Chris left, and Fort Know was, we found, impregnable. Another problem had arisen however, while I was putting down fresh dog water, I had not noticed that an army of little green hairy caterpillars had been looking for water and in the dark I put my delicate hands, firmly around the bowl and its array of green meanies ..... My fingers were on fire, hundreds of fiery green barbs attacked every single purple pinky, and the antihistamine was on the other side of the locked door.... There was only one solution, fortunately the tool cupboard was in the kitchen and HeeHoo, covered in Diesel, Dog Food and Peanut Butter, went about the demolition of one of the armoured plate glass windows..... . It already had a crack in it from the lawn mower so we felt vindicated as far as the insurance company was concerned !! I am sure Darling Charlie was, all the while, sitting there, on his dust free, beautifully clean cloud, laughing his socks off at us !! +++++++ THAT IMMENSE AND BROODING SPIRIT !! Helen Keller When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall, always. GHANDI ++++++++++++ ++ I am a Committee member at the Bulawayo Power Boat Club (BPBC) which is situated on the banks of Lower Ncema. We have an elderly ex-farmer couple who live on the premises and look after the wonderful facilities. The gardens are well maintained and there are beautiful shady Jacaranda trees with luscious green lawns = perfect for a braai or picnic. There are clean, well-kept ablutions (with hot running water!!) and a jungle-gym / table tennis / play area for children. Lower Ncema has been without water since last years winter as it was pumped so low that it was eventually de-commissioned. People only visited the dam to revel at how low it was. However, approximately 3 weeks ago, BCC in their wisdom, released water from Upper Ncema into Lower Ncema, taking Lower's water level up to approximately 50%. What a difference this has made. The BPBC offers visitors a safe, peaceful, controlled environment where swimming is safe and the air is fresh. There is a bar / kiosk facility which is operated by the Committee depending on patronage. There is a committee member on duty every weekend to assist visitors with rules of passage and safety rules for boating. The road to the dam isn't too bad, directions as follows: turn off the main Esigodini to Mbalabala road at the Lower Ncema / Inyankuni turn-off (approximately 56km peg,) stay on tar road for approximately 1km, turn left after railway line onto a reasonable dirt road for approximately 6km. The whole trip only takes approximately 40 minutes from Bulawayo. We are hoping to have good support over the Easter weekend and during the school holidays with lots of people keen to get back on the water to enjoy fishing / tubing and skiing. The following plan of action has been initiated by concerned pastors within the city… 1. Each church adopting and setting aside a day of the week to pray and fast as a congregation 2. Friday Night meetings at various churches for prayer 3. Prayer and intercessory groups within the city uniting in prayer 4. Pastors and church leaders to meet for prayer (Monday 10 March 1000 - 1200 @ a venue to be confirmed) 5. A day for National prayer for all (Easter Monday 24 March, 1000 - 1500 @ ZITF Main Arena) Prayer Focus 1. Leadership 2. Peace, justice, truth & freedom 3. The economy This will be underlined by repentance (past) and a turning toward righteousness (future) for the sake of healing in our nation. Please note: This is not a political meeting. This is not an initiative by any particular church or organisation. This is a cry for Christians to unite in prayer for God to heal our nation regardless or race, colour or affiliation. In December our Members, and the oldies in general, were very fortunate and we made every effort to make the season memorable for them. At that stage Help Network were able to assist us hugely and have now enabled us to provide one proper meal and one nourishing soup a week and I am glad to say this continues to be the case. In many cases these are the only proper meals they have during the week. Also, now, when flour permits, our faithful chef provides delicious pancakes to go with the morning tea on a Wednesday morning. These are going down very well. Nothing can happen on a Thursday as there is no power. We cater for about 46 at a time and more are now making enquiries as prices of everything rocket through the roof to amounts which blast the mind. The contribution they make would not even buy a cabbage leaf! The water situation seems to have improved enough to enable residents at the Cottages to bath once a week. They have no showers and nowhere to store water when cuts occur. We do hear that cuts are a thing of the past and sincerely hope this is the case. Our hairdresser, will be coming again this month which has pleased a lot of members. The library continues to be the hub of the Centre but the videos have not proved greatly popular, partly I would say, due to the frequent and power unpredictable cuts. A doctor makes regular calls and blood pressures are checked monthly. Many of our members are waiting patiently for the orthopaedic assistance which is so desperately needed and has been long promised. We were extremely sorry to lose one very active Member who, with her husband, could no longer manage here. She was responsible for organising so many of the activities and as yet the gap is yawning. There is a big changeover at the Cottages which affects the Centre. We have younger people, many of them still working, and they will probably have little time to take part in the activities of the Centre. We are also having a changeover of Administrator with a new couple starting on 10.3. We extend grateful thanks to the retiring couple who did a wonderful job and wish them the best in their total retirement and hope our new couple will enjoy the challenges of keeping the centre up and running. PLEASE REMEMBER The Hall is available for small gatherings, workshops, engagement parties, weddings etc. for a reasonable donation. However, no liquor allowed! WE NEED THE HALL TO BE USED IN ORDER TO KEEP IT RUNNING. Once again we would APPEAL to all those who have family left in this country that there are few who are not in DIRE STRAITS and anything you can do to assist will be hugely appreciated. Our `oldies' put such a lot of effort in to building this country and this City and they deserve to be able to enjoy their remaining years without the worry of not knowing where their next mouthful will come from. I took her to Galen House where Dr. Ferguson was sitting behind the reception counter and saw to her immediately. We went up to the xray dept, where the poor radiographer tried so hard not to put Gill through any more pain, to find the elbow was well and truly dislocated. Dr. Ferguson said he was unable to put it back and referred Gill to Dr. Masasanure who was at UBH. It was 1.30pm by the time we got to UBH and were so pleasantly surprised at what we found there. Fabian from the casualty department saw to us straight away and went up to the theatre to inform Dr. Masasanure that we had arrived. He came back and told us that we would have to wait for the doctor to finish in surgery and that he would come down to casualty and see to Gill.Granted we had to wait till gone 4.15pm before he was available, but we had all those hours to observe what was going on around us. UBH needs a good lick of paint, but the place was spotless and the staff, lots of nurses and pleasant junior doctors getting through the patients at a great speed. The place is quite noisy but there was a happiness about the place. The professionalism of Dr. Masasanure, his co doctor (his name I didn't catch) and Fabian who saw to and fixed Gill up, was outstanding. They allowed me to stay in with Gill while they gave her the general and was allowed back in 7 minutes later as Gill came round, plaster of parised up and on the best 'trip' ever !! 15 minutes later I packed Gill back into the car, both of us so thrilled with our , albeit long ,time at UBH. I want to offer a huge 'thank you' to the staff at UBH for doing what they do under such difficult conditions, and congratulations at maintaining certain standards with all the obstacles that are in their way. We walked out of UBH with an amazing feeling of hope......and gratitude that some of our professionals are still here to offer an amazing service. To Galen House and Dr. Ferguson a huge thank you too for being so kind to Gill, and sending us to the right place. Will always be affectionately remembered +++++++ OBITUARY ROBIN WILLIAM DOUST - Against all the odds in 2007 Robin managed to return to Bulawayo and his beloved Public Library but as the year progressed his mobility became more of a problem and frequent stays in hospital forced him to pull out. Recently he had taken on the editorship of the Friends of the Bulawayo Railway Museum Newsletters and he had just completed his third issue of which he was justly proud. However, yesterday, 11th March, during the night his night nurse became very concerned about his condition and he was taken to Mater Dei Hospital where, after examination, he was admitted. He passed away peacefully at 2. a.m. this morning, 12.3.08. Robin will be sorely missed in many quarters as he took a lively interest in so many of the City's activities. His passions were his intense interest in trains both live and model and all aspects of his Library and bringing about new initiatives. He was responsible for the Book Buses, both donated to the Library by the Netherlands, for developing the satellite libraries, for introducing a special study section and the computers and internet which have proved very popular. He introduced a photocopy service and oversaw the library for the blind. Each year he spent time in the UK where he had many contacts and always came back with a great number of up to date books to keep the members of the library happy. He also introduced the Red Carpet area which housed the very latest acquisitions and daily newspapers and for which membership was higher. He was always updating the video library too. Robin had no relations in this country but many friends. I am sure I speak for all when I say we will miss you sorely - RIP Robin. For our new branch we are in urgent need of sewing machines. This is an appeal to anyone leaving, downsizing or just discarding no longer needed items. If such items are for sale at a reasonable figure,we might be able to buy what is on offer from our limited donated funds. No one is paid in SGOFOTI.The women who are the counsellors and who run the organisation are all volunteers. About 6 out of 100 people over 65 years and 35 out of 100 people over 85 years have some form of dementia.1 People rarely have dementia before age 60. Other factors that increase your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease include: A family history of Alzheimer's disease, especially if one or more of your parents or siblings has the disease. The presence of the apolipoprotein E-4 gene, which increases the chances you will develop Alzheimer's disease. Having Down syndrome, which is a genetic disorder that results in mental retardation. Having diabetes, which is a condition that causes high blood sugar. Taking hormone replacement therapy. Research indicates if you are a woman aged 65 or older, your risk for developing dementia (including Alzheimer's disease) increases if you take oestrogen plus progestin therapy.3 +++++++ Ability is what you're capable of doing.
