Once again IT IS GUY FAWKES TIME,PLEASE Keep your pets indoors and close to you. They need your love and assurance when these fireworks are going off more than normal. This is a frightening event for all animals and events like this put an extra strain on the services of the SPCA, which we can well do without especially with the current economic issues facing us. Please be aware of any animals on the roads as a result of these "explosions" and phone the SPCA. The animals of Zimbabwe are having a torrid time anyway and a 30 minute firework display will just add to their misery. Thank goodness the Rugby World Cup is over and I can have my Husband back !! HeeHoo is definitely not the same man, when the World Cup is taking place, he becomes distracted, distraught and detached !! His dreams, I am sure, are all in green and gold Technicolor, and involve drop goals, running after Wilkinson, scrumming with Os, he even sings Bok Van Blerk songs in his sleep !! His right foot twitches and jerks so much that even the cats leave the Marital Bed... His pillow is almost continuously twisted in the shape of a rugby ball when he awakes, and when and staggers off to the office, it is not to work, but to phone his friends and talk Bokke talk !! I can even get him to go and queue for essential commodities, as he is bound to find a fellow Supporter in a bread or a Pilsener queue somewhere !! It all started when that wretched Boeing flew over the Ellis Park stadium in 1995 having his roots deep in the Kokstad hinterland ... his Bokke blood flowed like the Vaal River, his Leurloop Heart pounded furiously, and he vowed to never miss his Team ever !! Our car sound system, when we travel, used to resound with intellectual podcasts, Richard Burton reading Thomas Hardy, or snippets from thought provoking Talk Shows, but for months now we have been listening to Rugby Songs about some chap called "Habana" by Bok Van Blerk !! Television has always been a nightmare in our house, HeeHoo watches one channel and our legendary butler Charlie watches the other !! Needless to say the telly has been tuned to nothing but Bokke related topics, "Famous Tries, Legendary Kicks, Stupendous Drop Goals" et al, for months now !! If I hear Naas Botha's voice once more I am going to scream (Mind you I don't mind the odd sneaky peek at Victor Mattfield when HeeHoo is not looking !) Bokke fever reached a peak in S.A. this week, I gather the traffic police were wearing Springbok jerseys and even the entire S.A. Army had the S.A. flag tattooed on their faces...... At the Oliver Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, a green carpet the entire length of the runway was laid down for the returning Heroes, and at Heathrow the London Fire Brigade must have used the equivalent of Zimbabwe's entire water ration for the whole year, spraying the Springbok plane as it arrived in all its glorious triumph. Oh well, its all over now, we can become Man and Wife again for a couple of months, until I find him secretly perusing the New Zealand Travel Guides, and I know the whole delightful experience is going to start all over again. Booking for Don Carlo is open at the Academy - tickets are $100 000 and all proceeds go to the Hudson Fund. The opera will be shown in Room 25 and there will be no reserved seating but numbers will be limited so advance booking is advisable. Don Carlo was originally composed for Paris as Don Carlos, subsequently translated into Italian and shorn of its first act, but it's still a long opera at just over three hours so will begin at 6.00 p.m. (gates open at 5.30) with a supper interval at about 7.45 - bring your own including drinks. Tables and chairs will be supplied in the grounds plus a bar if required, though you're very welcome to bring your own drinks too. The opera should be over by about 10.15. Don Carlo is generally considered one of the finest of all Verdi's operas and it's certainly one of his grandest, a story of love and intrigue, of private passions versus public duty, set against the background of the court of Philip II of Spain with scenes of great spectacle and drama (including an auto-da-fé!) which are fully realised in this lavish production by Franco Zeffirelli from La Scala, Milan. The all-star cast includes the late, great Luciano Pavarotti as well as Daniella Dessi, Luciana D'Intino, Alexander Anisimov and Samuel Ramey conducted by Riccardo Muti. PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO : Deon Marcus (Piano) at the Robert Sibson Hall on Saturday 10 November at 6.00 P.M. Deon hardly needs any introduction to a Bulawayo audience and was heard playing a Mozart duet sonata and his own Handel Variations at the unveiling of the bust of Derek Hudson. This will be his first full solo recital and he has chosen a varied programme mostly of short pieces which, as well as two of his own compositions, will include music by Schumann, Mozart, Debussy, Satie, Poulenc, Blancafort, Albeniz and Mompou. Some of this may be a little off the beaten track but it is all guaranteed to be attractive music and easy on the ear! There will be no advance booking and entry will be by donation from 5.15 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Hudson Fund. The concert will last about an hour and there will be no interval. PAB intends to arrange another dinner party afterwards, probably at the Roasted Berry again. Limited tickets on sale There are conditions of attending !!!! +++++++++ Derek Hudson made an immense contribution to Bulawayo's musical life. When he retired from the Academy in April 2003 he had been its director for 27 years, exactly a quarter of the period of modern Bulawayo's existence as it happened. He had retired from the Bulawayo Philharmonic Orchestra two years earlier, also after 27 years, so held both posts longer than any other incumbent. Nor do I think any of his very gifted predecessors would object to my saying that he was by quite some way the most talented and accomplished musician to have held either post. It seemed important to several of us that he should not be forgotten and one obvious and fitting way would be to commission a bust to keep Robert Sibson company in the foyer. I was going to ask Gill Kaufman, who was, of course, responsible for Robert's bust (a wonderful piece of work by any standards), but we were at dinner together only a matter of weeks after Derek's death, and she saved me the need to ask by offering to do the deed. Naturally I was delighted and plans were laid immediately. But we wanted to go further: several who have been important to the Academy are remembered in specific areas - Robert Sibson has his hall, Jack Chalmers Park his library and Malcolm Fleming the green room. One area in which the Academy was seriously lacking was audio-visual equipment and so the idea of an audio-visual centre in Derek's memory arose. The first phase of this scheme was launched a few days ago on Monday 15 October when the bust was unveiled by Derek's daughters, Joanna and Kate, and the Derek Hudson Audio-Visual Centre inaugurated. The bust stands in a spotlit corner of the foyer on a plinth six inches taller than Robert's - Derek looked down on most of us so we thought it fitting that he should continue to do so! In consultation with Gill, we decided on a Derek at the height of his powers in his fifties - no glasses which he always hated having to wear and in conductor's white tie. The result is a splendid memorial to the man, a strikingly accurate portrayal with just the hint of a smile and yet the eyes focused on his next project. There was very well deserved applause when the bust was unveiled - and some tears as well. And so the tribute to Derek was duly and splendidly launched - but there's still part of the journey ahead. We felt we were far enough on with our plans to go public, so to speak, especially as the bust was complete. I felt it was important to show two things: one quite simply that nearly four years after he left Bulawayo and two after his death, we hadn't forgotten Derek. And secondly that, despite the chaos and collapse all around us, some good things are still happening in Bulawayo, that the Academy to which so many have given so much over the years, is going on and striving to increase its role as a centre of education, excellence and entertainment. I think it's worth explaining just what we have achieved so far with our "Hudson Project" - and what we still hope to do. There was a constraint right from the start in that, although it's a large building, the Academy is short of space. Eventually we decided to use a room in the Beit Wing adjacent to the library as the heart of the project even though it's not as large as we would really have liked, seating only about thirty comfortably, but the plan is to use it as a study centre and lecture room and spill over into Room 25 (which we intend also to rename after Derek) for larger audiences. An appeal was launched to help purchase equipment and prepare the room and so far we have brought in (and spent!) around £1700.00 and Z$85 000 000. We've also received very generous donations of first class equipment as well as LPs, CDs and cassettes so have an impressive array: a DVD player and projector; a second DVD/CD player with full home theatre system; two turntables; two cassette players; two amplifiers; four pairs of speakers; two televisions incorporating videos; five Walkman CD players and four sets of headphones. Ultimately a second projector is on the wants list and we hope shortly to obtain a large collapsible screen. This will mean that both the Audio-Visual Centre and Room 25 will be fully equipped to show DVDs and the former will also have four or five work stations where individual students can listen to CDs, cassettes or LPs (including recent donations we have over four thousand of the latter!) or watch videos. The AV Centre has been redecorated and has blinds; the work stations will be installed within weeks - and additional security in the shape of burglar bars is also necessary. We intend then to equip Room 25 ("The Hudson Room") with bars and blinds (eleven windows!). We hope that these facilities will be of interest and use to schools, especially, of course, Girls' College with which the Academy is linked, but also to any schools who can bring their pupils to the Academy. We intend to run afternoon sessions when they can find out what an orchestra looks and sounds like and see excerpts from concerts, operas and ballets. Plans are also in hand for regular series of DVD showings - the complete cycle of Mahler symphonies conducted by Leonard Bernstein, Wagner's Ring from the Met and Simon Rattle's highly acclaimed introduction to modern music are all to hand and the American Embassy has promised us access to an eleven-part history of jazz - between them these should occupy most of next year! I hope we might get Kenneth Clark's marvellous series on Civilisation which had a good deal of music in it and still stands up well after nearly forty years. and looks marvellous on the big screen. Operas, ballet and orchestral concerts will also be on offer on a regular basis (we intend a "Christmas Season" of La Bohème, L'Italiana in Algeri and The Nutcracker) and in time we hope to make the growing CD library available for loan. We're intending to introduce a "Friends of the Academy" scheme which will give access to the Audio-Visual Centre and Library - the latter very well stocked with both books and printed music as well as the recorded variety. Further down the line is a permanent sound system in the Sibson Hall for band and other performances that need amplification - and this in turn will allow DVD showings for a large audience once we acquire a second screen and back-projection equipment. It will in addition incorporate a public address system for conferences and the like - which will also be very useful for quietly spoken musicians who like to talk to their audience! We think we've made a good start but we intend to build on it and increase the Academy's role in Bulawayo's life - which would delight Derek and will help to keep his memory green for many years to come. [Any contributions to the Academy's Hudson Fund will be very gratefully received at the Academy or direct to Michael Bullivant!] +++++++ CLASS OF 1947 PLUMTREE SCHOOL REUNION "I am organising a 60th anniversary luncheon on November 20th for anyone who entered Plumtree School in 1947.If you have not already been contacted please email mailto:bandbbwakefield@ zol.co.zw Best regards Basil Wakefield" +++++++++++ CHURCH FETE AT: THE CHURCH of the ASCENSION, Leander Ave.,/ Kent Road, Hillside.
