Seeking Missing relative

A friend of a friend from Australia is looking for a grave of a dead grand aunt. Her name was Lettice Swann. She was a teacher in the Byo School for Girls and died in 1930s. Her sister was a nurse. The relative is from Australia (Tom Swann).

Which graveyard! Who is the local historical Guru?

If someone remembers such a person, knows where her grave might be, etc - please let me know at pgordon@healthnet.zw or 091342465 .

ENT Surgeon.

FOR ALL DELIA SMITH COOKERY FANS . . .

Delia's Way #1

Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips.

The Real Women's Way

Just suck the ice cream out of the bottom of the cone, for Goodness sake. You are probably lying on the couch with your feet up eating it anyway.

Delia's Way #2

To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.

The Real Women's Way

Buy Smash and keep it in the pantry for up to a year.

Delia's Way #3

When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking tin, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and there won't be any white mess on the outside of the cake.

The Real Women's Way

Woolies sell cakes. They even do decorated versions.

Delia's Way #4

If you accidentally over-salt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a potato slice.

The Real Women's Way

If you over salt a dish while you are cooking, that's tough sh*t.

The Real Women's motto is..."I made it and you will eat it and I don't care how bad it tastes."

Delia's Way #5

Wrap celery in aluminium foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.

The Real Women's Way

It could keep forever. I don't eat it.

Delia's Way #6

Brush some beaten egg white over piecrust before baking to yield a beautiful glossy finish.

The Real Women's Way

Woolies frozen pie directions do not include brushing any egg whites over the crust so I don't do that.

Delia's Way #7

Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.

The Real Women's Way

Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and drop it in 8 ounces of tequila. Drink the tequila. You might still have the headache, but who gives a hoot?

Delia's Way #8

If you have a problem opening jars, try using latex dishwashing gloves. They give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy.

The Real Women's Way

Go ask mister tight @rse, cutelegs, single neighbour to do it for you.

And finally the most important tip...

Delia's Way #9

Freeze leftover wine into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.

The Real Women's Way

What leftover wine?????

RELATIVES VISITING SERVICE

I am a Zimbabwean trying to remain in Zimbabwe. I am a farmer's wife, mother, daughter, currently registered general nurse and midwife - trained in the days when nursing was an important skill and vocation. I am setting up a service to visit relatives left in care when their families left Zimbabwe. I will be operating from Harare. I think that there are many people who left Zimbabwe with heavy hearts because they had to leave behind parents who could not move or did not want to move when their children left the country. The children who emigrated may be looking for someone who can visit their parents (or other relatives) and check up on them. Check to see how their health (physical, emotional, mental) is; check to see if they need anything done for them; be a substitute daughter and give regular accurate reports on their well being. This is the service that I am offering to provide for a small fee. I have worked with old people and have experience of their needs. As a daughter, I know how important it is to know exactly how your parent is and how difficult it is to know from a distance.

The problem that I am facing is in advertising this service.
My phone number is Zim. 91 603621
References can be supplied.

Yours sincerely,
Margaret Low.

COMBINED CHURCH SERVICE for hunger victims.

THERE WILL BE AN INTERDENOMINATIONAL CHURCH SERVICE ON SAT. 12th OCT AT 8.30am ----9.30am, at the CHURCH of ASCENSION , HILLSIDE. ALL WELCOME!!!

PLEASE COME ALONG & JOIN IN TO SHOW SOLIDARITY IN THE FACE OF THESE HARSH & PRESSING TIMES.

NEW IRISH BLESSING

May there always be work for your hands to do;
May your purse always hold a coin or two;
May the sun always shine on your windowpane;
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;
May the hand of a friend always be near you;
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

The Definition of A Braai

It's the only type of cooking a "real" man will do. When a man volunteers to do the 'BRAAI' the following chain of events are put into motion:

  1. The woman goes to the store.
  2. The woman fixes the salad, vegetables, and dessert.
  3. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils, and takes it to the man, who is lounging beside the grill, beer in hand.
  4. The man places it on the grill
  5. The woman fetches the man a beer.
  6. The woman goes inside to set the table and check the vegetables.
  7. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning
  8. The man takes the meat off the grill and hands it to the woman.
  9. The Woman fetches the man another beer.
  10. The woman prepares the plates and brings them to the table.
  11. After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.
  12. Everyone praises man and thanks him for his cooking efforts.
  13. The man asks the woman how she enjoyed "her night off."

And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there is just no pleasing some women and asks the Woman to fetch him another beer.

Inner Strength

If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time,
If you can overlook when people take things out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
If you can do all these things,

Then you are probably the family dog.

Harare Children's Home

Yesterday, Saturday 14 September, I visited the Harare Children's Home with my son Brett. Whilst he played soccer with some of the boys in the garden, I walked around with a young Indian girl of 16 yrs who has been in the home for 7 yrs. Along with 97 other children of varying ages and cultures, there are 2 baby boys - one is 3 weeks old and the other 2 months. The youngest one was brought in by the police last week. In desperation, the police had been feeding him with a packet of Chimombe. The nappies I saw were like flimsy cardboard because they have no softener - no nappy liners, no waterproofs.

The social welfare supply the kitchen with 50kg of mealie meal per month. It is impossible to feed this volume of children with this quantity and not run short. They only get meat/chicken at the most 2x per week and are currently buying their meat from Carswell Meats. The other days its sadza and cabbage/relish.

Honey Dew Farm kindly donate veggies 2x per week.

Please, please, if you know of anyone who is leaving the country, ask them to spare any of the following:

BABY

  • nappies (sml and big) & waterproofs
  • nappy liners
  • teats & bottles
  • Nan 1 & 2 Milk Formula. They buy straight from Nestle - it is not donated.
  • any baby clothing - eg baby growers, booties & vests
  • nappy rash ointment, lotions, baby soap, shampoos, etc, etc.

FOOD

  • any protein foods (meat/chicken/fish/soya mince/eggs)
  • milk
  • mealie meal
  • fruit & veg
  • salt
  • tinned foods, etc

MISCELLANEOUS

  • clothing (girls up to 18yrs, boys up to 10 yrs)
  • novels for the older girls

OR

  • Goods/Cash may be dropped off directly at the Harare Children's Home (Daventry Road, Eastlea). If more convenient, you may drop off at my home in Mount Pleasant (pse call me) or I can arrange to collect. Please leave your name, address and phone number with your donation so letters of thanks (and receipts for cash) can be sent to you by the Home.

Many thanks for forwarding this on.

ZIMBABWE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY AUTHORITY

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL CUSTOMERS

We wish to warn our customers about a team of persons moving around Harare, wearing ZESA overalls, purporting to be electricity meter readers. Upon gaining entry to a premise these men have bound the maid or owner and then ransacked the house.

We remind all our customers that our meter readers wear official ZESA uniforms and carry their ZESA identity cards at all times. Our customers have the right to demand to see this ID card before the meter reader is given entry. Ordinarily, our meter readers would also call at more or less the same date each month and be alone.

If you suspect a meter reader is bogus we recommend that you contact us before giving them access. Please ask to speak to someone in meter reading on 774508/30.

We assure you of our best service at all times.
