LETS JUST BUY OURSELVES A FOOT BALL CLUB AND A PLATINUM MINE

Colonel Gaddafi is so anxious to gain acceptance within the international community that he is buying his way into the world's most popular sport - football.

Earlier this year the Libyan Arab Foreign Investment Company bought a 5% stake in Italy's most successful club - Juventus. Now Gaddafi is negotiating to purchase the financially troubled Greek first division club PAOK Salonika.

"You are our God" wrote PAOK fans in a letter delivered to the Libyan Embassy in Athens. "We kneel in homage in front of you. Buy PAOK, be the saviour of our souls"

Apparently the Libyan Leader is even planning to bid for the World Cup to be held in Libya. Libya is in a position to organise the World Cup finals" Insists gaddafi's son who plays for the National team !!

NEW ORLEANS ON THE BRINK

With its iron-latticed French Quarter and Mardi Gras parades, New Orleans has a claim to be America's most distinctive and culturally rich city. But it's also a disaster waiting to happen.

The only major US city below Sea level, it is situated on boggy ground between lake Paontchattrain and the Mississippi River - a setting that has always created problems.

A hugh system of embankments and locks is necessary to hold back water from the lake and river, and a network of pumps operates full time to move water out of the city. despite these defences, a hurricane in 1965 caused severe flooding and left 75 dead in the region. Today the city is subsiding, sea levels are rising and coastal barriers are being worn away, all of which means that the risk is graver than ever. If a bad hurricane hit New Orleans now, experts say, defences could be breached and the New Orleans "bowl" could fill with water causing some 100,000 deaths.

If the Big One Hit, new Orleans could disappear. In Italy where Venice is facing similar extinction, the Government has begun a $3bn project to save the city. But there seems to be no similar urgency in washington or New orleans. It's time critics say, that they worked together to quickly come up with a plan to save America's own natural treasure

MY FRIENDSHIP BOOK

I have a list of folks I know......all written in a book,
And every now and then......I go and take a look.

That is when I realize these names......they are but a part,
Not of the book they're written in......but taken from the heart.

For each name stands for someone......who has crossed my path sometime,
And in that meeting they have become......the reason and the rhyme.

Although it sounds fantastic......for me to make this claim,
I really am composed......of each remembered name.

Although you're not aware......of any special link,
Just knowing you, has shaped my life......more than you could think.

So please don't think my greeting......as just a mere routine,
your name was not......forgotten in between.

For when I send a greeting......that is addressed to you,
It is because you're on the list......of folks I'm indebted to.

So whether I have known you......for many days or few,
In some ways you have a part......in shaping things I do.

I am but a total......of many folks I've met,
You are a friend I would prefer......never ever to forget.

Thank you for being my friend !!

S. O. A. P

(Supporting Old Age Pensioners)

Funded by a group of concerned Bulawayo citizens, who hope……… “to make a difference.”

Admin: P.O. Box 8433, Belmont, Bulawayo. Tel: (09) 230601 or 242453

About 15 months ago, a local auctioneer Mr. Tony Osborne noticed that more and more of our senior citizens were reluctantly selling off their most precious possessions . Upon making enquiries he learnt that these old folks could simply no longer keep up with the Zimbabwe rate of inflation (currently 115%) and subsequently they were having to sell off their moveables in order to survive.

Around about the same time, a local Byo resident, became aware of three elderly sisters, who had no means of support other than a small monthly social welfare cheque. . These ladies, in order to survive, went along to funeral + church services for the the tea + snacks served at these occasions which was evidently their main source of nourishment..

Clearly, something had to be done !!!

Myself and a friend now administer a fund known as S.O.A.P. (supporting old age pensioners) . We have been supporting nine households, and just this month another ten pensioners living in an old age complex and who are in desperate need have been brought to our attention bringing our total to 19.

Business houses and individuals who have become aware of our fund and have been generous indeed, furthermore, some business houses give monthly donations of vegetable packs and various foodstuffs which go a long way in assisting to fill up the monthly grocery support parcels which we make up and deliver. The gratitude on the faces of the oldies, is something to behold.! Over the Heroes weekend, the writer and her husband delivered food parcels to the old age complex.. One lady just stared at us for a good minute. We thought that perhaps she was afraid to open her security gate as she did not know us. Eventually, she burst into tears and said, “ You are a gift from God, I do not have a thing to eat”. The writer went into her little flatlet and personally witnessed the fridge standing switched off with the door open . There was no evidence of any foodstuffs in the kitchen. I honestly believe that the poor soul had not even had a cup of tea that day.

We know that there are hundreds more out there who are in desperate need. These good folks have worked hard all their lives. They have paid their taxes and looked forward to when they could relax and let their pensions provide for their golden years. This catastrophic economic situation is crippling them and they are completely powerless to do anything about it. Imagine what life can be like for a pensioner living on a fixed income. One meal a day if they’re lucky, bread $68.00, milk $70.00, in winter its cold and they cant afford to heat the room or even leave the electric lights burning……..no T.V, no entertainment, they’re scared and too proud to admit that they are in dire financial straits.

In order to keep the ball bouncing we simply have to find more people who would be willing to assist financially or in kind. . Please consider the plight of these poor souls and if you would like to become involved by way of support in cash or kind, we would love to hear from you.

On behalf of the needy oldies, we thank you in advance for all and any assistance that you might be able to provide. Every little bit helps to “make a difference”

Through a Rapists Eyes

(please read ladies, or men, pass on to your wives!)

Please send this email to others. It is the result of a study done by researchers who went into a Correctional Facility and interviewed serial and just everyday rapists! A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:

The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.

The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who's clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing. They also look for women who are talking on their cellphones, or searching through their purse or doing other activities whilst walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered. The time of day men are most likely to attack and rape a woman is in the early morning, between 5 and 8:30 a.m.

The number one place women are abducted from/attacked at is grocery store parking lots; and number two is office parking lots/garages; number three is public restrooms.

The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don't have to worry about getting caught. Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is

15-20 years. If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn't worth it because it will be time-consuming. These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands. Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you're not worth it.

Several defense mechanisms he taught us are:

If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk, I can't believe it is so cold out here, we're in for a bad winter. Now you've seen their face and could identify them in a line-up, you lose appeal as a target.

If someone is coming towards you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.

If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent. If someone grabs you, you can't beat them with strength but you can by outsmarting them.

If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh - HARD. One arm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands - the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it hurts.

After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap guy's parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you'll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he's out of there. When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as hard as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.

Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behaviour, don't dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel a little silly at the time, but you'd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

PLEASE READ THEN FORWARD THIS TO ANY WOMAN YOU KNOW, IT'S SIMPLE STUFF THAT COULD SAVE HER LIFE.

GOOD CLEAN STUFF

I had the pleasure of going to see the new Hugh Grant movie `About A Boy' whilst in Johannesburg this past weekend - it was excellent. Not a single bit of racing, action-packed, adrenalin-filled moments, not a single boob, sex, bottoms or endless kissing, just Hugh Grant looking rather yummy, acting like a typical dog with lots of eye-brow raising `really's'.

Its a story about a 36 year old man who has never grown up, who meets the oldest 12 year old in the world and together they try to work out their lives - a lot of this movie would be lost on a small screen so well worth the visit to the movie house - if it ever gets to Bulawayo!

Have YOU Had Your Banana Today?

If you want a quick fix for flagging energy levels there' s no better snack than a banana. Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proved that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions making it a must to add to your daily diet.

ANEMIA:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

BLOOD PRESSURE:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

BRAIN POWER:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power.

Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

CONSTIPATION:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

DEPRESSION:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain trypotophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

HANGOVERS:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

HEART BURN:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body so if you suffer from heart-burn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

MORNING SICKNESS:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

MOPUITO BITES:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

NERVES:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system. Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

PMS:
Forget the pills, eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

ULCERS:
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronic ulcer cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL:
Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD):
Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, trypotophan.

SMOKING:
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

STRESS:
Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water-balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

STROKES:
According to research in 'The New England Journal of Medicine' eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%! So you see a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When You compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe it's time to change that well-known phrase so that we say,

"A Banana a day keeps the doctor away!"
