But it was only when ..... and Coelacanth champion Lara Knight showed me said Coelacanth lying forlornly in his leaking glass case in the museum archives that I began to realise the importance of this Poorly Poisson. The Coelacanth comes from a very old lineage which dates back about 400 million years. It precedes the dinosaur by 100 million years. As the coelacanth fossil record abruptly ends at about 70 million years, scientists thought that the coelacanths had played out their role in evolution and had disappeared in the great wave of extinction's that characterised the end of the cretaceous. However it was with great excitement that a real live one was recorded caught by Captain Hendrik Goosen in 1928 in the River Chalumna. And then several years later another coelacanth was caught in the Comores by one James Bierly Smith. The Coelacanth is the sole representative of a very ancient vertebrae group and provides the scientific world with an invaluable window into the past.... the veritable "Missing Link " Now the fact that the little old Bulawayo Museum has one of these incredible specimens which has come to symbolise the plight of many endangered marine animals is significant. Fondly known as Old Four Legs or the Dinofish, the Coelacanth has its own rescue web-siteshttp://www.dinofish.com/ - its own shop, its own magic in a world where it must be preserved at all costs. It even has its own poem written By Francine M Storey Point your hands like a compass to down and dive off the edge of Madagascar into the tea-warm Indian ocean as the fathoms widen before you in a blue-green peacock's tail elongate yourself like an eel round and flat at the same time then move your arms in great arcs and descend along the path of broken sunlight swim carefully through the hypnotising seaweed over the ragged battlements of tulip-coloured corals until at last, you pass the ironwork of the continent and you are below the world here where the sun is repulsed by the fist of pressure blind fish like beggars wait for alms and the sea is a Buddha silent and dark no progression no regression fullness flatness of tides the eye in the throat beats the time when the pupil is ready the teacher arrives wait for the coelacanth fish of rounded gills and lobed fins 400 million years old last inhabitant of the Devonian sea if he approaches unseen unheard ask him how did you survive? ***** Old Four Legs in the Bulawayo Museum is still in pretty good condition despite his plight. He needs to be saved though, he is a part of our living history, he is possibly the Missing Link to mans evolution, a fish with four legs ? This fish has been described as a 'living fossil' and is very rare; most Museums around the world only having plaster casts or fibreglass models. We have the real deal: a preserved Coelacanth literally in the flesh! Unfortunately the original tank it was displayed in was damaged and for the last 15 years or so our precious specimen has been tucked away in the basement. The temporary tank in which the Coelacanth is presently housed is rusting and it is possible that should nothing be done that the Coelacanth itself may deteriorate. Our museum is fortunate to have many distinguished, qualified and capable staff. It also has a suitable display tank to re-home the Coelacanth. However to successfully preserve and display this fish approximately 400 litres of Isopropyl Alcohol is required. The cost of this is around $400 million dollars. A Bulawayo firm Acol Chemical has agreed to provide the isopropyl alcohol and repair to the case is being sought, but important funding is still needed to save our Coelacanth. Can you help ? e mail magskriel@mac.com +++++++ BULAWAYO LETS UNITE AND GET OUR CREMATORIUM UP AND RUNNING "The Bulawayo community is renowned for pulling together and getting the job done. There is one job that we as a community have not focused sufficient attention on and that relates to the refurbishment of the City's crematorium. It has not been functioning for some time now and that has caused enormous distress and inconvenience to hundreds of families who have been bereaved in the last few years. I am aware that perennial stalwarts like Neil Todd and Noel Scott are at the present time doing sterling work overseas in trying to raise the necessary money to refurbish the crematorium. However it seems to me that we have all the necessary engineering skills in Bulawayo for us to do the job and if we get some outside help that will be a bonus. So in essence this is an appeal to the Bulawayo community, especially our industrial, engineering and commercial sectors, to assist the work already been done by Neil, Noel and others by providing expertise and assistance to get the job done quickly." The Hindu Community and the association "Abuz" is also very sympathetic with our plight and we thank them for that. The Booysen family has also been involved in trying to activate the refurbishment of the Crematorium and so has the Bulawayo and the City Council. I know several firms who would be more than willing to assist financially, and if you wish to help, please make your pledge to Thank you so much. ++++++++++++++ 2 NOTICES MATABELELAND 4 X 4 CLUB JAMBOREE VENUE MOVED TO BREEDAN EVERADE RACEWAY FALLS ROAD CIRCUIT, VICTORIA FALLS ROAD. I am an ex Zimbo now living in Mexico with my wife and family. I left in 2001 when times were quite tough. I had no work and could not find any. I am now a naturalised Mexican citizen but my heart will for ever be in Zim. My wife who is a mexican also loves Zim and Africa. My eldest daughter who is now three just wants to go to visit Africa (she has never been there - it must be something in the blood). At present it is too expensive for us but one day we will return to visit. We are expecting our second child sometime in the next few days. My poor wife is really struggling. We go to an international church here in Mexico city and there is a South African couple that attend as well. Amazingly as well we have quite a number of Nigerians who also attend the church. I am actually the Great grandson of John Lee. My grandmother was Lily Campbell ex Plumtree. I hope one day to take my children and wife to see the old farmhouse etc in Mangwe. The only family that I have in Zim now is my Aunt and Uncle Lu and Mike Brough who are living in Harare. Another good friend of the family who is in Bulawayo whom I am not sure if you know her is Nookie Alport. Anyway just thought I would drop you a line to say hi and to thankyou for such great website. How about some photos of Plumtree? By the way is Reps still in operation, and has anyone you know gone fishing in Umslanga dam near Mangwe? I often wonder what the fishing is like there now as I used to go there often with my Gran in the 70's. I will send you a link to our website so that you can see something of me and my family. A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- And it really works!! I had a paediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc. Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (an d that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, "It worked!" Please pass on; everyone needs this helpful hint. From: ahenriques2790@rogers.com +++++++++++++ THE AFRICA CHALLENGE London to Falcon - Overland Since I last posted news back in April there have been many developments. Firstly – When travelling through Africa each country has a different set of visa requirements. To be fair it is relatively simple to obtain visas through the respective consulates in London, however there are a few places that are, should we say, challenging. I applied for a visa for Libya as I had heard this would be the most difficult one to obtain after Sudan. The process was a challenge in itself but the cost of obtaining the visa was prohibitive at just under £500 for a three day visit, which basically meant I was looking for an alternative route!! Routes through Africa one would imagine would be quite easy, in fact there are three main ones that are used. The first is accessible from Spain through to Morocco provided you wish to travel the West Coast of Africa. The second is Italy through to Tunisia, and into Libya, discussed above! The third is to drive through Europe, Turkey, Syria, and Jordan into Egypt…..I have now chosen the third option. My route now takes me through France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and into Zimbabwe. Secondly – Whilst planning my trip I found that everyone I spoke was very interested in what I was planning and where I am going, but no matter how big the interest, it was a massive challenge to get a travel buddy. I figured the best way around this was to join several overland web pages and advertise through there, which I did and had no joy. I had given up all hope of finding someone to travel with me when I emailed Dan Baring for some advice on a topic he had written about, and found that he too was going to be travelling the same route at more or less the same time as I was planning. To cut a very long story short, Dan (with two Land Rovers – four people) and I have decided that there is definitely safety in numbers and the trip would be enjoyed more with a few more people. To date there are six of us driving four Land Rover Defender 110's. The crew names are: John Laing – London to Falcon Graham Crouch – London to Cairo Andy Laing – Cairo to Nairobi Dan Baring – London to Cape Town Bianca Uliana – London to Cape Town James Sale – London to Cape Town Charles Eyre – London to Cape Town Graham Crouch – London to Cairo At this stage all seems to be back on track for the now 18,000 kilometre voyage through Africa. As far as the preparations have gone I am now well under way to finalising everything: Vehicle – This is nearly completed. I will be replacing the suspension system, renewing all the oil seals, replacing all the rubber bushes and servicing the vehicle. Spare parts have been bought and a full tool box and first aid kit will be carried. Accommodation – I have purchased a roof top tent which is more practical for a trip of this magnitude. I did try out a ground tent but the hassle associated with putting a tent up each evening means that the additional cost is well worth it. Food – A full supply of dry and non perishable items have been bought for the trip, all vegetables, fruit, and meat will be bought en route. Water: I have had a 40l water tank complete with tap fitted to the underneath of my land rover which means I do not take up valuable space within the cab. Fuel – I have been fortunate enough to have been given 210 litres of diesel which will hopefully get me through to Istanbul, Turkey. This is a massive saving as each litre in the UK costs 104 pence. Paperwork – All has been completed, resignations have been tendered, notice on my flat has been handed in. The vehicle paperwork is all in order, and my visas have been granted for Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Ethiopia, the rest I will get en route. Packing – This seems to be the head ache that I have left, I am not sure what I am going to do with this except maybe sell most of my stuff at a car boot sale. I have not collected much stuff in the UK and what I have is sentimental so I do not want to part with it so may find it necessary to send some stuff back by ship via Cape Town, which is a good reason for me to extend my journey!! Sponsorship – This has been a very interesting experience, both I, and of course Falcon College, are indebted to those who have supported us so far. As mentioned in previous mailings my motivation is to collect money for the College. We still need lots more support, and I urge anyone reading this to please make a donation. Please remember none of the funds raised go towards the costs of the trip, I have funded this from my own pocket, all money raised will be going towards bettering the facilities at Falcon. There are about 3000 Falcon Old Boys, if each gave just £20 we would make £60K for the College, that would be a fantastic achievement!!! Donations can be sent to the official Old Boys bank accounts in London or Johannesburg details of which have been circulated or can be provided again upon request. Thank you for reading this. And thank you for your interest and support for our Old School. It's surely a good cause. With sadness there is something to rub against, A wound to tend with lotion and cloth. When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up, Something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change. But happiness floats. It doesn't need you to hold it down. It doesn't need anything. Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing, And disappears when it wants to. You are happy either way. Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house And now live over a quarry of noise and dust Cannot make you unhappy. Everything has a life of its own, It too could wake up filled with possibilities Of coffee cake and ripe peaches, And love even the floor which needs to be swept, The soiled linens and scratched records…. Since there is no place large enough To contain so much happiness, You shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you Into everything you touch. You are not responsible. You take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit For the moon, but continues to hold it, and to share it, And in that way, be known. - Naomi Shihab Nye - +++++++++++++++++ TIDBITS Let each day be your masterpiece. - Unknown - +++++++++ A group of young Black Zimbabweans have formed the Zimbabwe Prayer forum .
