A LOVE AFFAIR WITH A PAINT ROLLER

It is hard to find fault with my electronic diary, it thinks for me,  
sends me e-mails to remind me of dates, dentists appointments and  
meetings.

It keeps my birthday calendar up to date not only for the current  
year but perpetually without my doing a single thing.

I can send invitations to HeeHoo to join me at suitable functions 
and  
he can send me "accept " or "decline" invitations to join him.  
(Accept cocktail parties and dinners but "decline" rugby matches and  
evenings at the pub !!)

But it fails dismally when I try and press fresh flowers in it as I  
used to do in my old fashioned paper diaries !!

Would have dearly liked to pinch a few of the Oz wildflowers that 
are  
so beautiful along the highways in Perth in Spring.

The Geraldton Waxes would have pressed beautifully, the brilliant 
red  
Kangaroo Paws, the abundant gorse and brilliant yellow wattle 
flowers  
would have looked good too.

There is consolation in that I photographed them, but not quite the  
same as paging through old diaries and coming across pressed flowers  
to remind one of happy days.

A visit to Perth is always like a time warp for me. Not only do I 
see  
my precious family members but I also get to see much loved people  
from halcyon and happy years gone by.

Among those special friends are Jenny and Marcus, we can still pick  
up a friendship from thirty years ago as if there were never any gap  
at all, and reminisce about those  whacky days when they lived in  
that tiny flat on the top of the High Court in Bulawayo. A stones  
throw away from the very same flat mentioned in John Gordon Davis  
Book "Hold My Hand I am Dying"

Of course the primary reason that I was invited to Oz was to 
decorate  
"She Who Must Runs" newly purchased apartment ! A quaint double 
story  
unit with some most interesting neighbours, very close to the Swan  
River which will become prime real estate quite soon I am sure.

Now decorating in the First World certainly has its advantages, I  
fell totally in love with my paint roller. It was so porous it could  
hold enough paint, without spilling a single drop, to paint an 
entire  
wall. ! Those Aussi blokes sure know how to make excellent DIY tools.

Hands on Home decorating is new to me as a spoilt Zimbabwean, for  
years now Charlie and I have decorated homes, but not in this sort 
of  
luxury and nor at such close quarters !!

Normally Charlie has decorated the numerous rooms with an awful old  
ladder with missing steps, an antiquated paint brush that loses six  
hairs with each stroke and he has lugged a heavy metal roller bucket  
around while I have directed operations from an easy vantage point  
nearby !

HOWEVER nothing daunted, Charlieless, I took to this decorating lark  
like a duck to water. Its easy with the right tools I must say, the  
paint slurped on like liquid gold, the step ladder was so light I  
could swing it around on my little pinky, and the sewing, stitching  
and curtain hanging was a piece of cake with the Australian mod cons  
in creativity.

SheWho did occasionally allow me off my step ladder to go for runs  
with her in the beautiful Perth parks and many happy memories were  
made as She ran and I shuffled along the glorious Swan River.

(Here I must offer abject apologies to the Director of the Perth  
Publicity Association for once saying that Perth has no trees. The  
more established parts of the City have a wonderful abundance of  
trees and the parks and gardens are superb !!)

Of course the Piece De Resistance was when we and 26 thousand other  
Perthians ran the City to Surf 12km "Fun Run" It was reminiscent of  
all the pain of childbirth and a tonsillectomy rolled into one.......

However we did receive a fine medal for the pain, but climbing the  
step ladder for the next few days to slosh paint on the ceiling (and  
the carpet and the couches)  was pay back time for all those years 
of  
making Charlie undertake Home Decorating without the right tools. !!!

We are holding our annual Soap fundraising  on
         SUNDAY the 29th OCTOBER 2006.
This will open at 2pm culminating in a professional firework
display in the early evening. This is a family event with full bar
and catering facilities, also static displays. All proceeds will go
to S.O.A.P. This huge event will continue year to year. Fundraising
has been on last Sunday in October for the last six years and SOAP
has been the lucky recipient for the last 2 years. This social
gathering has proved to be a very popular event assisting SOAP to
continue in its' work for Bulawayo's precious old folk.
The stand price is $6,000(000) and includes admission for a car
and two people, exhibitors parking will be within the grounds. Stands
to be set up by 1:45 at the latest.

BMX ZIMBABWE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS  BULAWAYO  9th  10th  
SEPTEMBER 2006

Attention!  Riders Ready  Watch the gates  Beep,  
beep!.  A familiar set of instructions for anyone who has ridden 
in  
a Bicycle Motor Cross Race (BMX).

Locally, this exciting and challenging sport was started in the  
Killarney Quarries Bulawayo 1983 by Rob Sterling.  A second track  
opened up in Harare some two years later.  BMX is a fully 
constituted  
sport, administered by the Zimbabwe Cycling Federation and is now  
also registered as an Olympic discipline.

BMX racing is not only limited to children, on the contrary, Elite  
riders are aged between 17 and 28 years old with the more talented  
individuals becoming professionals Internationally .  For those  
mature lunatics, there is also a Masters Division and the 
oldest  
rider competing in the 2006 World Championships was 64!

Racing at Busters BMX Club Bulawayo takes place during the school  
term at weekends, with a National series of events being staged to  
include the Harare and Gweru Tracks. Whilst competition, and  
attaining National Colours is the ultimate goal for members, it is  
also a family orientated sport, and often the smoke of evening  
braais, music and a busy tuck shop round off a fun filled  
evening, that all are welcome to join.

Zimbabwe BMX has achieved incredible results on the international  
stage.  Currently we have riders who are South African Champions in  
three different age groups. Records also show our riders attending  
the first International in Italy, as far back as 1986 when Tracy  
Lilburn from Bulawayo became World Champion in the senior girls  
class.  From a pool of over 2000 representative participants at the  
Annual World Championships, Zim riders have achieved 2nd place in  
2003, (Travers Springer).   Since then 3rd 4th and 5th places have  
been won annually by Amy and Kirt Pollen as well as Nichollas Welch  
and Daniella Du toit. These are all results that Zimbabwe can be  
justifiably proud of.

Please join us and support our Champions at the final leg Zimbabwe  
BMX Open Championship, which will be held at the Busters Track on  
the:  9th September  Start 1400 hours

To all my music pupils - I am back from the UK - so much for the 4  
months - missed home too much.  Please contact me for music lessons  
again and to future pupils, I teach syncopated music, very quick and  
easy to learn -  you will learn to read music. I teach piano, piano

making and bread/pizza making, pickling, jamming, making yogurt and  
cheese.  Including a wide range of handy hints and money saving ways  
to make detergents and to copy some tinned and bottled foods - won't  
tell the difference.

I came across your site by accident when doing some research on  
Bulawayo.
My grandfather Michael Ignatius Griffin arrived in Bulawayo in 1897  
and apparently was quite a 'big shot' there in the early days. He  
built the Carlton Hotel and various other significant structures, 
and  
established and farmed Cowdray Park where he died in the '50's (I  
think). He was married to a Mary Francey (Irish). I think he was  
Australian!
I love to hear from you if you know any more of the family history.

PLEASE HELP LAMECK

Many years before we left Byo in 2003, I  befriended  a 
quadraplegic,  
Lameck Kasuku, who lives in the Bartley Block. His family were rural  
folk, so ultimately he had to be institutionalised to get the care  
that quadraplegics require.  His neck was broken in a rugby game at  
Hartsfield when he was only 21....he is now 37. Fortunately he can  
breathe unassisted, and he has limited use of one hand. He also has  
an indomitable spirit & is really an amazing & inspirational 
character.
I  used to visit Lameck every week, and supplied him with clothes,  
toiletries, fruit, extra food etc. He is an avid reader so he has a  
great need for reading material...especially sports books/ magazines. 
( I still send stuff up for him with every Zimbo passing through). 
He  
is a sports fanatic & loves cricket, soccer, boxing & rugby(in spite  
of  the tragic accident that changed his life so dramatically).   I  
secured a TV and VCR for him so he could watch all the sports tapes 
I  
recorded for him on DSTV Supersport channels. He also loves action  
movies... blood & guts stuff!  He really is the most delightful  
person, always cheerful, never complains, and has a smile that 
lights  
up a room.   It was an honour to be his friend.  As you can imagine,  
when we decided to leave Byo  I was really in a state about  who  
would take over Lameck's caregiving! Two of Lameck's friends had  
already emigrated. Ilan Elkaim had returned to the USA, &  Zoe Brest  
had gone to Aus. Zoe helped out with Lameck's physio.  Fortunately I  
found an angel.....Sandy McAdam took over where I left off & has 
been  
absolutely wonderful to Lameck. Her and Lameck have become firm  
friends. She is in the process of trying to find a publisher for the  
book Lameck has written.
Some years ago a celebrity breakfast was held in Byo to raise funds  
for a Trust for Lameck. Adrian Garvey &  Gary Teichman brought an  
electric wheelchair for Lameck  from S.Africa, & hosted the event. 
It  
was a great success & a very respectable amount was raised.  
Unfortunately, the situation in Zim. has resulted in the rapid  
evaporation of those funds.
The sad news is that the TV & VCR (which are obviously VERY well  
used) are now in disrepair.  Without his sports videos & movies,  
there is a great void in Lameck's available entertainment. I was  
wondering if anyone leaving Zim. & trying to get rid of  household  
goods would be generous enough to donate a TV & VCR to Lameck?   
Perhaps some kind soul out there could find it in their  heart to  
make this gesture??

Attention all travellers

*/_On Saturday 26th August, my husband and i left Bulawayo for  
Francistown for the weekend .To avoid being stuck behind long queues  
we decided to leave at 5 am in order to be there as the border opens  
at 6am .At about 5:15am obviously sill quite dark ,and travelling at  
about 100km per hr just past the butchery Mbokodo,we both saw a huge  
rock (looked like a concrete soccer ball ) come flying towards us  
from the left hand side. Luckily it just missed the windscreen by  
centimetres , but hit the roof with a loud metallic crash and then  
hit into the roll bar on the back of the bakkie. We were both  
obviously very shaken and the first instinct was to pull over to the  
side of the road and stop to see what had happened. We had almost  
come to a complete stop when we both realised what was about to  
happen and immediately drove on. The rock was obviously thrown from 
a  
slight incline on the side of the road and meant to go through the  
windscreen or side window and force the vehicle to stop,they would  
then obviously rob you of any money possessions and possibly the  
vehicle as well.
As you can imagine the rest of the trip in the dark was very  
uneasy .We reported the incident to the police at the border  
post ,who were very friendly and helpful,on talking to the officer  
taking the statement he informed  us that the same thing has 
happened  
on several occasions ,more so just across the border in  
Botswana ,these criminals are also waiting in ambush at various lay- 
bye's robbing people of possessions and vehicles .
I have since heard of an African gentleman  who had a similar  
experience but was found dead and naked on the side of the road  
closer to Figtree. This incident only happened about a month and a  
half ago,whether he died from the rock coming through the windscreen  
or from the beating he was given it is still unknown.

All i can say is that it was a terrifying experience and would not  
want this to happen to anyone else. I would advise people travelling  
to only do so in daylight hours .We were both very lucky to come out  
of this unhurt ,but it could have been so much worse had we been  
going slower or faster or had the rock been thrown harder or in a  
different way.

Please be so carefull when driving at night and should this  
happen ,just carry on driving if possible and only stop at a safe  
place .
