We have had occasion to visit Texas again recently and one of the first things that struck me, if not THE first thing, was the absence of the ubiquitous plastic bags and super cool packets that festoon our streets back home. Don't get me wrong, I love Bulawayo with all my heart but there is life out there and its rather nice too !! One of the nicest things that the USA has that we do not have in Zimbabwe, is seasons. We have summer and winter only, it is Fall right now in the USA and it is stunning. There are also different shopping seasons too which really appeal to me (as long as you avoid doing the conversion thing ) I am told that there are one hunderd and thirty thousand Zim dollars to one US dollar on the "parralel" market (well thats the rate as I write this little missal !!It will change n the next few hours I am sure !!) October is the Halloween shopping season in the USA. The stores are full of ghouls, ghosties, goblins and bright orange pumpkins. Scarecrows glare at you coyly from every garden nook and cranny. Skeletons hang menacingly amidst the purple cobwebs in most American porches and there are special houses that are prepared as "Haunted Houses" that you can visit and get the frights of your life !! Great fields of enormous bright orange pumpkins are grown especially just for Halloween and the flowers that you buy for the house are tastefully selected in orange, purple and yellow, this years Halloween colours !! Of course the most decorative season is Christmas (although it is not going to be called Christmas season for much longer if the appalling anti Christmas activists have their way), now it is deemed politically correct to call it the "Holiday Season" (cough splutter hiss shriek) Easter is another of the big buying and selling seasons, Thanksgiving is another, Super Bowl fever also makes money for the retailers and of course the 4th of July. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and so everything one buys or wears is pink ! And of course you only wear green in March for St Patrick's Day !! Valentines Day of course is a big money spinner and people even decorate their houses in red and white and if you go out to dinner on Valetine's night, be sure to wear red won't you !! The gardens in Texas are mostly unfenced, beautifully tended and neat, but flowers are not a big part of a Texas garden. Mainly because the heat kills them in summer and the snow kills them in Winter. A few homes sport pansies and petunias, but the weather is so radical that gardening is not a favourite occupation. Temperatures can reach 104 degrees farenheit (40 degrees centigrade) in summer and the summer lasts a long time !! Then in winter you are below freezing for much of the time. And so the penchant develops, I suppose, for decorating the garden with pumpkins in October, Christmas trees and Santas in December, harvesty looking decor at Thanksgiving and Easter bunnies in April or May. The American public is so delightfully patriotic!! Patriotism any form always brings a lump to my throat and I always cry when anyone sings a national anthem. I still feel like standing to attention when I hear "God Save the Queen" but of course the anthem that is the most poignant of all is our own "Blessed be the Land of Zimbabwe". All Zimbabwe families should possess a Zimbabwe Flag (and of course a Highlanders Flag !!) Many American homes fly the American Star Spangled Banner all year round with fervent patriotism. It is customary to fly the United States flag only during daylight. However, if a patriotic effect is intended, the flag may be flown twenty-four hours a day, provided it is properly illuminated at night. Whole reams of instructions on the correct Flag Ettiquette can be found and it makes quite interesting reading. There are also about twenty five designated "Flag Days" where ardent patriots make sure their flag is raised appropriately! Some of the flag days include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Abraham Lincoln s Birthday, George Washington's Birthday, St. Patrick s Day, Armed Forces Day, Father s Day, Independence Day, Labor Day , Patriot Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and of course Christmas Day (sorry I mean Happy Holiday Day !!) I must admit I still prefer my garden to a Texas garden. I love a garden full of flowers and shrubs all year round even if you cannot see it for the electric fence, the ten foot wall and the razor wire !! ++++++++++++ NOTICES WORLD BIRD WATCH 2005 A tribute to the Birds of Zimbabwe 22 October 2005 at the NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM Pictorial & Specimen Displays Quiz Bird Walk in the Park (meet at the Museum at 10.30 am) Organised by BirdLife Zimbabwe Matabeleland Branch in association with the Natural History Museum ++++++++ Bulawayo Island Hospice Service are looking for 2 cell phones for our Srs - Sr Clark needs one as soon as possibe as hers has been patched so many times with insulation tape and now finally the charging mechanism is about to go at anytime (Siemens C10). I can not do everything, but I can do something. And because I can not do everything, I will not refuse to do something I can do.-Hellen Keller- How true the above statement is for all of us. I look into any law that pertains to relevent problems and forward it to you the public who might be sitting in total oblivion of what we the civilians are entitled to in Zimbabwe. This week, I want to inform you about Neighbourhood Watch Committees. FOR THE FULL CRIME REPORT E MAIL TRACEY ON crime@mweb.bo.zw ++++ WATERBLUES We all experience some sort of rationing every day. But to my mind one of the worst scenarios is having NO WATER. After more than 2 weeks of a thin trickle DURING NIGHT ONLY, finally ,the source dried up and there was NOTHING emerging from our taps! As if life is coming to an end! We survived this misery and after 5 days of agony , physical and brain work we were the happiest people last night when 'life 'came back! Most of all we are very grateful to our friends who supplied us with 1000 liters borehole water twice a week, so that we could survive in the first place!!!!! But also thanks to the imagination, ingenuity and technical skills of my husband and the help of our maid and gardener who adhered to our strict rules ,that normal household scores continued, so that we came out clean and tidy!! During the first two weeks the trickle from the tap was still able to fill up the water geyser and the toilet cysterns- at least during night, so that there was enough supply for short but even hot showers and washing up. For the rest of the day the cysterns of course had to be handfilled with possibly fresh water. But then the pressure got weaker, and when the municipal supply ceased we were stuck. We fixed the waterpipe from the bowser pump to the bathtap shower outlet opening the hot water tap. In this way you can pump the water straight into the geyser! And so we could have our hot shower again straight from the tap! That was that! To be able to utilize the automatic washing maschine (mine is a DEFY), which again does not work without proper water pressure, we installed a drum high enough next to the machine. With a hosepipe fixed to the drum (or with a bucket) you can fill the machine through the soap compartment up to the water level where it can run. The machine will wash until the soap water is drained. Then it will stop. Turn the dial manually to 'spin'. Thereafter it stops again , turn it to 'rinse' and fill again up to the appropriate water level.. Repeat procedure 3 times at the marked program stages. Needless to say that you should collect that washing water for your garden!! It does not harm the plants!!!! I can tell you it is a bit of a pain, but not too bad. It works and you feel proud of your achievement. Even busy mums and working ladies could spare the time! I also found that I use less water with this method than normally with that continuous waterflow during the rinsing program. Another tip for the survival of your precious plants: We punched holes near the bottom of 2 liter Mazoe bottles and planted them deep next to the needy plants. The 2 liters go straight to the roots and evaporation is reduced and you can exactly calculate your water usage for the plants. We also connected our wastewater outlets from the house with pipes that lead underground into 200 l drums from which we collect the wastewater from kitchen and showers only. By the way: We have been doing this since the late eighties!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, if you want to be successful and survive you will have to work for it! If only we could have a schedule of the rationing, then everybody could deal with it!!! Good luck with YOUR EFFORTS!!! Hurricanes names are chosen from a list selected by the World Meteorological Organization. The Atlantic is assigned six lists of names, with one list used each year. Every sixth year, the first list begins again. Each name on the list starts with a different letter, for example, the name of the very first hurricane of the season starts with the letter A, the next starts with the letter B, and so on. The letters "Q", "U", "X", "Y" and "Z", however, are not used. Often when an unusually destructive hurricane hits, that hurricane's name is retired and never used again. Since 1954, forty names have been retired. In 1996 Hurricane Luis was retired. Is your name among the currently used or retired hurricane names? Should you require any further information or my C.V. please phone Dawn on 281019." ++++ Just to let the public know, The Bulawayo water problem is not so much the small reservoirs etc but the bad piping system. A local water engineer informs me that 45% of the water pumped is being lost en route due to bad piping AND the Council are aware of this! To pipe water from the Zambezi would mean having to pump it up hill from there! This means that we would have massive electricity charges to pay to get this water here! THEN, we'll still lose 45% of that again if the piping still hasn't been replaced! Byo needs to have new piping layed throughout before a new source of water is looked for and is justified! Bulawayo is also way behind ( like it doesn't exist!) in water re cycling! The Old Morton Jaffrey works are no longer used for any meaniful water supply. Most of Harare's water is recycled as are most cities in the world!! What the city fathers are wanting is a new car when the old one just has a flat wheel!! Bulawayo does have enough water!! Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. It was October, and the Indians on a remote reservation asked their new Chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold, and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?" "It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later, he called the National Weather Service again. "Does it still look like it going to be a very cold winter?" "Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter." The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later, the Chief called the National Weather Service again. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?" "Absolutely," the man replied. "It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever." "How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, "The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy."
