Please come to support us, hear what plans we have and add your contribution! There are also vacancies on the committee if anyone feels they would like to get further involved. Please let me know if you're interested, either by e-mail or on Wednesday before the meeting begins. Lunch will be available at the Club either in the Atrium or the Dining Room - you don't have to be a member. Atrium prices are very reasonable and a main course in the Dining Room costs $66 000 - also pretty reasonable these days! There will also be a full bar. Our thanks to those who have paid their subscriptions - membership cards will be handed out at the AGM. If you haven't yet paid, then the AGM will provide the ideal opportunity to save postage and any other inconvenience! Membership guarantees a considerable saving on ticket prices (there will be a discount of $10 000 for Wissam Boustany's concert, for example) and it also guarantees a seat in the event of a sell-out - which is quite probable for the New England Youth Ensemble if previous experience is anything to go by! A reminder that our first concert will be on TUESDAY 21 JUNE when flautist Wissam Boustany will be partnered by Jeanette Micklem in a programme including sonatas by Mozart and César Franck as well as music specially written for Wissam. Booking will open on Monday 6 June and a newsletter with full details will be sent before the end of May. I hope you will join us on Wednesday! DONT MISS THIS TIMELESS FAVOURITE +++++++ ART IN THE PARK I would be most grateful if you would advertise the upcoming 'Art in the Park' fund raising event scheduled for Sunday 29 May 2005 at the Hillside Dams. This is a Rotary Club of Bulawayo initiative, supported by the 4 clubs of Bulawayo, and has been running for a few years now. Aimed at raising money for various charities in and around Bulawayo whilst raising awareness and appreciation of our wonderful Art heritage. We sincerely hope that the visitors to 'Scruffs' will come along to our event too as we will be open from 10am to 4pm! Exhibitors will include various Artists/Craftsmen who will contribute part of the proceeds of the sale of their product to Rotary. Entry to the event is by 'donation' and we can assure the public that these monies will be put to good use to uplift the quality of life for the needy recipients. Fun activities have been scheduled to run over the course of the day including a 'Survivor' style obstacle course for the younger, more energetic visitors, Boy and Girl Scouts, Sea Cadets and 'Security' in attendance. Lunch, teas and refreshments with be available in a 'carnival' atmosphere. We hope to make the day thoroughly enjoyable for the whole family...so we would ask Bulawayans to please support what we hope will continue to be an exciting annual event. We use all types and sizes to make crafts. We are a capacity building, community development project sponsored by Painted Dog Conservation. We have experienced great success during our first year, and common comment at the Harare Arts Festival was that we had some of the best, most unique, highest quality work there. But we depend upon recycled materials and as sources for wires are becoming scarce, production of popular items is becoming difficult. This project has made income earning in a struggling but TALENTED community and we need your assistance. Old compressors? We will make beautiful things from them. But if you have ANY sorts of scrap wires, please contact us. We will organise collection and transport. Also needed for the Centre are old magazines and books with wildlife photos and a large sharp table top guillotine. Please contact Arts co-ordinator as bellow and come by and visit when you are in the area. We’re open M-F 10-5 but can accommodate other times with advance notice. The original Gazette Notice issued on the 25th March is now under urgent review and we expect a new Notice shortly. In the meantime our advice stands. 1. You do not need to back pay - the retrospective nature of the original Notice is illegal. 2. If you cannot afford the new wages you simply write to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, stating that your income is as follows and you can only afford to pay your domestic worker the following salary. You request the permission of the Ministry to do so in terms of the Labour Act. which allows such special dispensation to employers who cannot afford to pay the new wages. 3. The new Notice is likely to go back to the level of wage increase that was originally proposed by the Board responsible - about $400 000 a month. When this happens the advice outlined above will still stand. You do not need to dismiss employees until this process is exhausted and should any approach be made by the Union you can simply show them the letter sent to the Ministry and refer the matter to your local Ministry of Labour Offices - they will be very helpful. Under no circumstances allow yourself to be bullied by the Union. E.CROSS ++++++ "The Task Is Not Finished" BULAWAYO SOUTH COMBINED CHURCHES SERVICE Praying for the Nation Saturday 28th MAY at 8.30 a.m. Church of The Ascension, Hillside (Cnr. Leander and Kent ) "The Race Is Not For The Swift But Those Who Can Endure" Christians Together For Justice and Peace Bulwayo Mission Statement Who we are We are an informal group of Church leaders, lay and ordained, drawn from a variety of Christian traditions, and sharing a common concern about the political, social and economic crisis confronting our nation at this time, and its moral and spiritual implications. We understand this multi-dimensional crisis primarily as a radical challenge to our faith and we seek to find appropriate ways and means of acting together in a faith response. As brothers and sisters in Christ we confess to a profound disappointment that hitherto the Church in Zimbabwe has failed to respond to this deepening crisis with any degree of urgency or unity, or with the divine authority that is given when the Church acts in critical solidarity with the poor and suffering. Confessing our own part in this failure we seek, by the grace of God, to be a sign and symbol of what we believe the Church is called to be. Though at this point in time we are only "Christians together" i.e. individuals acting out of personal conviction, we look forward to that time when we shall be "Churches Together", our different traditions and denominations having found a unity of mission in the self-giving love of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Our situation The situation in which we find ourselves at this time is one of intense suffering caused in large measure by bad governance and a crisis of legitimacy. We interpret this chronic failure as a clear sign that our rulers have lost their way morally and spiritually. At the heart of the current crisis we discern a radical failure by those entrusted with leadership to serve in wisdom and humility. Specifically we note on their part a ruthless determination to perpetuate their own rule at any cost, and a recklessness as to the consequences of so doing. It is of the essence of leadership that those appointed to lead should have a heart of compassion for their people, yet those who rule this land today appear to have hearts of stone which are unmoved by the suffering of the people. It is of the very essence of democratic government that those elected to positions of authority should be held accountable for their actions and omissions, yet our rulers refuse to submit to public scrutiny or to answer to any outside of their own ruling party. The evidence is clear that their primary, and indeed only real, concern is to serve their own selfish interests and to maintain their iron grip on power and privilege. Yet they do so at a terrible cost to the nation as the gulf between the over-privileged and the under-privileged continues to widen to the point at which we have become not one nation but two. And since the people will not willingly accede to such an unjust and immoral system, our rulers have resorted to state-sponsored violence in order to enforce it, and to a vicious programme of lies and propaganda in order to hide the truth from the people. We are not surprised therefore at the ad hoc, short-sighted and confused policies which spring from these evil motives, nor at the division which they sow in the nation. These policies are destructive of the peace, harmony and prosperity which God wills for all his children. Our calling It is within such a situation of intense suffering and moral and spiritual confusion that we have to interpret our calling to follow Christ in Zimbabwe today, not as isolated individuals but rather as a community of believers, on the pattern of the first disciples of our Lord. Within this context we understand our calling to be to follow our Lord in the way of the Cross, working, witnessing and worshiping together as a sign and symbol of his sovereign Kingdom. The cost The Kingdom of Christ which we are called to serve is a kingdom of love, forgiveness, reconciliation and peace. It is a kingdom of truth and justice which gives the true measure of every earthly kingdom, including the godless tyranny now holding sway in Zimbabwe. We are aware that our allegiance to the Kingdom of Christ may bring us into conflict with those who reject his sovereign rule, yet we are ready to bear the cost of this allegiance. So long as we hold fast to Christ we know that we need not fear any earthly ruler. Our priorities Against the selfish and destructive ideologies which hold sway in our nation today, we assert that peace and harmony can only be achieved when the human dignity of every individual Zimbabwean is affirmed, and when society is built on justice, love and truth. Only where there is justice will there be true peace and will harmony prevail. Our priorities are shaped by this understanding of the divine law. We know that what is required of us by our Sovereign Lord will only become clear as we walk together in the way of the Cross and in specific acts of Christian obedience. Nevertheless it is clear to us at the outset that we have certain immediate objectives, including the following: - To promote the Kingdom principles of truth, justice and peace against all the idolatrous policies and practices of the present regime - To enunciate clearly the Biblical principles of servant leadership and just governance - To expose evil wherever we see it in the structures, policies and practices that enslave our people, and to call the nation to repentance before the truth which God reveals to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear - To demand that the basic human rights, which we understand to be God-given, be respected by all. Specifically this includes the freedom of expression, association and assembly - To promote a programme of education for all whereby each person comes to a realization of his or her human dignity and God-given human and social rights, and is encouraged to work towards the attainment of those rights - To assert the rule of law and to make a united stand against the violence and lawlessness that are spiraling out of control and causing untold suffering - To stand alongside the victims of violence, lawlessness and injustice in our society as an act of Christian solidarity, and to offer succour where we can - To provide a space where the victims can tell their stories, and where necessary to be a voice for those who cannot or dare not speak the truth - To demand an end to he present culture of impunity which benefits those closely associated with the ruling party and encourages acts of violence and lawlessness. Against this growing trend we set ourselves to see that the perpetrators, and those who sponsor them, are brought to justice - To express our Christian solidarity with those, including but not limited to our own number, who are bravely witnessing to the Kingdom values in society and who are being persecuted for that witness - To demand an end to the use of food as a political weapon, and to use our own best efforts, in conjunction with the relevant NGO’s and donor agencies, to lobby for the distribution of food aid on the basis of human need and without regard to race, ethnic origin, political affiliation or other such criteria - To lobby for the adoption of a just and equitable Constitution in which the core values of the Kingdom are enshrined - To advocate for a re-run of the presidential election and for the holding of the parliamentary elections in a fair and free environment, according to democratic norms and standards and under effective international supervision Summary In a word, we find our mandate and authority in the great prophetic tradition to which the Bible bears witness, and which is summarized in the "manifesto" of our Lord himself when he said: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour". (Luke 4/18-19) We commit the outcome of all our endeavours into the hands of the One who called us and to his praise and glory ++++++ SMALLS "Seeking employment, a self starter with an Administrative learning, has worked in a sports club, and educational college. Thanks, Alan & Elsie Raaff ++++++++ Get away from all your worries for a couple of days! If anyone wants to get away from it all for a couple of days and really relax (providing you can get the fuel!), I can really recommend Hwange Safari Lodge. They have no working phone so don't waste time trying to book - just arrive. We found only a handful of people staying there and yet the hotel is still maintained to the best standards. We were upgraded to a luxury suite - in fact we were allowed to select the room with the best view! We then asked for more comfortable chairs which were provided. We found the staff attentive and helpful. The rooms are lovely, the view great, the food as good as can be expected - especially the breakfast. We had a constant supply of elephants at the waterhole in front and plenty of birds in the beautiful trees in the grounds - also well maintained. Yes its a bit expensive but still less than half what you would be asked to pay at any of the safari camps. It is really sad to see so much potential wasted but if you are after peace and quiet then the fact that the hotel is nearly empty wont bother you! Visit us at 19-21 Bristol Road North, Belmont, or telephone 63481 / 76280." ++++++++++ "Every single morning, when taking my children to school, I am HORRIFIED by the manner in which many children travel. Their parents may drive expensive cars, but they pay no attention at all to their children's safety. This morning I followed a lady in a Botswana registered 323 who not only was not wearing a seat belt herself (although if she had been I would probably have stopped and asked her if she considered her own safety more important than that of her child) but had her toddler, aged about 18 months, STANDING ON THE FRONT SEAT OF THE CAR. Does ANYONE realise how little it takes to cause serious injury to a child through a minor accident? If you consider that 30 kph is 'slow', just think how you would be injured if you hit a glass windscreen at that speed, and translate that to your child. All it takes is for someone to pull out in front of you, you slam on brakes, and whatever is in the car (and this includes objects on the seats or the rear shelf as well as you and your child) carries on travelling forwards at the same speed. Maybe I am considered extreme in putting my children in car seats - but in many countries it is the law that children use them, and in fact in most parts of Europe it is law that even adults in the back of a car wear seat belts where they are fitted, and that children under 14 years are prohibited from travelling in the front of a car. At some hospitals in the UK babies are not even allowed to leave the hospital by car after birth unless a nursing sister has checked that the baby is strapped into a properly fitted car seat. These laws are there for a reason, and just because the legislation does not exist in Zimbabwe, it does not mean we can think that accidents do not happen here as well. I have seen toddlers leaning out of car windows (front and back) and mothers who have taken the trouble to buy car seats for their babies but then neither strap the baby into the car seat nor the car seat into the car. I have seen children sitting on chairs in the back of trucks, and standing between the front seats of cars, even on one occasion a child standing on her mothers lap in the front of a pick-up. The very safest place for a child to be is in the middle of the back seat of the car, strapped into a properly fitted car seat. Failing that, they should at the very least always be SITTING on the back seat, NOT in the centre but behind the drivers or passengers seats. If you have no alternative but to use a pick-up, use the seat belt to strap your child in - and if there isn't enough space to do this and both sit in comfort, get in the back yourself. Your personal dignity is worth so much less than your child's life. PLEASE take the trouble to make your child aware of safety, and teach them that they not only might get hurt if an accident happens, but could even be the cause of an accident by distracting the driver. Hopefully 'it' will never happen - but just think what you would have to live with if it did." CONCERNED CITIZEN +++++ For Sale;- Curtains;- Various colours all full length $300,000.00 / pair. Just thought I would let your readers know that if any of them are planning to move over here and have animals that will have to go into quarantine for SIX months what is like.Back home my first reaction was that it would be kinder to have my little pooch put down. She was always so spoiled.Vet said I would stress more than pooch.Costly but we did.My pooch and daughters two cats picked up in the dark in Byo whisked to the airport, flown to Harare, flown to Jo'Burg, flown to London, picked up in a van and placed in kennels.Pooch on her own.We arrived two days later and I insisted on going to see her that day.Must be honest I broke down when I saw her.Beside herself thinking we had come to pick her up.6 months still to go.We visited every Saturday. Two hour trip.Bus,train and taxi.Every visit was the same she was beside herself. Finally the six months was up and the animals were delivered.Took her to my bedroom showed her our bed.She went mad.Took her outside and she barked like mad to let everyone know she was home.We survived the ordeal and it was worth it.Kennel staff very good.Ladyhaye Quarantine Kennels. Shopping here an eyeopener. How do you choose -about 20 different types of Yogurt and bread, deserts etc.Easiest way is to go for the cheapest. Then surprise we found A zim shop right next to where I work.Mealie meal,Cerelac,Mazoe crush and BOERWORS.Dont like the English sausages.Willards crisps,Lobels biscuits and if you are into it Rape. Last Sunday a beautiful sunny morning ran in to change into shorts catch a tan.Half an hour later cloudy and rainy and chilly.Get warm clothes on.An hour later sunny. So it continues.Waiting for the landlord to lay lawn.Always some excuse. We have now bought flowere tubs and troughs and planted blooming plants. At least a bit of colour.Ah but I do miss the Zim climate and relaxed lifestyle of Byo. A good place to come to cut down on smoking.I was on 60 a day.Now 20.Too expensive.Lungs giving problems as if to say not enough. So I cheat now and again. Even at my age managed to find a job afternoons only.Ashamed to admit that even though I am in accounts and working on computers my wage is the same as the lady who comes in the evenings to clean !!! Still it keeps the brain active. Regards to all over there.Take care and stay well. Cheers Ken Scott Zimboscotts@aol.com +++++ CONGRATULATIONS Melanie (nee Fulton) and Matthew Houghton - the awed parents of a perfect 43 cm, 3.05 kg Michael Adriano, born ‘bum first’ at 14.43 on 11.05.05 in Harare. Our special love, Mom and Dad Fulton, and Lisa and Andrew!!!!!!!!!!!!!! +++++ Made his entrance into the world, bottom and feet first, at 14.43 on 11 May 2005. At 43 cm long and 3.05 kg in weight, he is the most perfect baby ever (naturally). Parents are awed and humbled by this miraculous occurrence. Mp spoke to Matthew, who first held their new born son. He is in awe and kept repeating ‘Awesome’ at every moment. I spoke to a very tired and dreamy Melanie, feeding her baby boy, who I could hear gurgling in the background. She counts ten fingers and toes, well endowed and possesses a pair of Fulton lungs. Her assessment is he has Matt’s nose and mouth and her ears!!! The Caesar went well with no hitch. Melanie was forgotten for 1.5 hours in recovery but eventually managed to get back to her baby. Matthew gave his son his first bath. It's like champagne or high heels, and one must be prepared to suffer for it." - Arnold Bennett - +++++ Our Limits Transgressed Henry David Thoreau We need the tonic of wildness, to wade sometimes in marshes where the bittern and the meadow-hen lurk, and hear the booming of the snipe; to smell the whispering sedge where only the wilder and more solitary fowl builds her nest, and the mink crawls with its belly close to the ground. We can never have enough of nature. We must be refreshed by the sight of inexhaustible vigour, vast and titanic features, the sea-coast with its wrecks, the wilderness with its living and its decaying trees, the thunder cloud, and the rain which lasts weeks and produces freshets. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some life pasturing freely where we never wander.
