Two weeks ago HeHoo (short for He Who Must Be Obeyed) very kindly invited me to watch the finals of the Tri - Nations Rugby between the Boks and the Wallabys in Durban . I was overwhelmed at his kindness ..... but..... there were strings attached !! His part of the bargain was to get me to the ABSA Stadium in Durban. My part was to agree to go for the beers !! Now a girl's gotta do what a girls do but I was just not prepared for the rigours of rugby that awaited me !! Apart from the fact that the entire happiness of two nations rested on this encounter, I knew that Hehoo's life would not be the same ever again, if his team lost. I mean it was so serious that the result of this game meant even more to him that the weekly Zimbabwe Auction Rates Results !! That shows how bad it had all become especially after the euphoria of the previous Saturday when the All Blacks lost face at Ellis Park. Now, I am but a meek little Bulawayo girl and know very little about rugby, but I would like to make a small comment that, no wonder these lads have had a problem with their game over the past few years since that legendary World Cup win a few years ago !! I mean how on earth can a team with names like those, even talk to each other let alone work solidly, as one, in a maul ? "Os" ? I ask you with tears in my eyes..... Yes, I kid you not, the props name is actually Os Du Rand.... What sane mother would inflict a name like that on her sweet new baby boy ? Mind you I suppose she was not to know that he would grow up and be the size of an orse.... The crowd loves him, "Os, Os, Os, Os, they chant in delight when sweet little Os (all 275 lbs of mountainous flesh ) thunders onto the field... "Schalk "? what sort of name is that for goodness sake ? Yes that is the poor man's name - and he has a schalk of blond hair to go with it. Mind you he's not a bad player so maybe he was so upset with his name that he decided to show his mum exactly what he was made of !! And then there is Bakkies, Bolla, Gaffie and Arthob !!!! No wonder they cannot get it together, can you imagine the mish mash of names being shouted at each other on the field. "Bakkies, jo lekker blixem ou, jol that bol hier lekker jong !!!" The only one on the programme who had a name with any sort of genteel ring was Percy.... and that poor fellow was , as usual, under a severe onslaught from the raucous crowd for the entire match, as I gather he is every match. I suppose that's what comes of having a nice name like Percy..... "Percy Bashing" was the order of the day, even though the pretty fellow (aka Princess) as far as I was concerned, saved the day for the Nation !!! But I digress, there we were safely ensconced in the ABSA stadium in Row M. Now, I am no mathematical genius but row M had to be pretty high up... and I was right... When at last I summoned the courage to open my eyes and look around me, I realised at once that I needed an oxygen mask if I was to spend the next few hours in this particular place. There we were, supposedly at sea level ( I could actually see the sea over the roof we were so jolly high up !! ) 67 rows up from the men in green on the field in fact, and that was when vertigo set in..... The noise was deafening, their PA system was amazing, I felt every beat of every drum reverberating through my entire body. Johnny Clegg was doing something musical on the field, and virtually everyone in the stadium had his own Vodacom drum and believe me, they were beating them ebulliantly and with more than patriotic fervour !! It was at that moment that Hehoo's hopes of a happy match faded away. There was no way that Shehoo (short for She Who Must Obey Instantaneously) could possibly go and get the beer, out of the question, 67 rows up, hundreds of feet above sea level, (vertigo is a very convenient malady you must admit) There they were, the country's finest, (HeeHoo's name is Kriel after all) and those boykies gave those Wallabys a severe whipping much to the delight of the home crowd. But me, well I guess I just cooked my goose, I am sure I will never be invited to another game unless we get seats on the ground floor...... +++++++++ NOTICES Dear Concerned Resident, The Bulawayo Residents Association has been specifically formed to deal with the problem of the armed robberies that have taken place. We are proposing to increase the reward on the gang or gangs that have committed armed robberies in the Eastern Suburbs over the past two months. The reward is presently 10 million for the gang. The new proposal is 30 million per gang member arrested and convicted. Our aim is to raise 150 million by 10-09-2004 which will be deposited in an account administered by Bulawayo Residents Association. The funds will be invested @ plus minus 75%. The interest will be used to advertise plus any expenses connected to the reward and apprehension of the gangs. The balance of the interest will increase the size of the fund. The idea is to advertise the reward extensively through the media as well as posters throughout the Bulawayo area. A complete advertising campaign will take place which hopefully will ultimately pay dividends in the form of information leading to the arrests of the culprits. In the event of the reward not being paid out and the gang or gangs responsible vanish and the problem ends then the monies collected will be returned to the people who donated the funds. The alternative to this could be a continuous fund which will be used for future crimes ie. information leading to arrests of carjackers etc. This of course would only take place through consultation with your goodselves. If you are in a position to help we have suggested a figure of $500000 as a starting point. If you are in a position to offer more this would be appreciated. Remember this is about security in your own home so that you and your families can once again not worry about looking over your shoulder at night to see who has entered your property with criminal intentions aimed at armed physical violence, robbery and possible rape. We need to act now before someone else is seriously injured or killed. Remember “He who stands back and does nothing is as guilty as the perpetrator, God helps those who helps themselves!” If you wish to donate please forward a cheque to M. Querl ABJ Engineering Cowden Rd Steeldale who has kindly offered to collect the monies. A receipt will be issued . Please make out the cheque to EASTNOR Agencies, on the back please put security a/c. NOTE:- Please forward or speak to anyone else you feel who could also contribute towards this reward. Remember this is to help your community! Thanking you for your interest and donation hopefully. Bulawayo Residents Association. +++++++ Performing Arts Bulawayo Piers Lane (piano) Thursday 16 September ~ 7.30 p.m. ~ Robert Sibson Hall Scriabin: 10 Preludes from Opus 11 Henselt: 12 Etudes de Salon, Opus 2 Chopin: 2 Nocturnes, Opus 27 Chopin: ~ 2 Waltzes: F sharp minor, Op Post; C sharp minor, Opus 64/2 Rachmaninov: Variations on a Theme of Chopin, Opus 22 Booking at Meikles. Tickets: $10,000 ($6,000 to members). Piers will be making his fourth visit to Bulawayo and his programme presents music by four composer-pianists. Although those first two may not be so well known, early Scriabin brings with him more than a hint of Chopin whilst Henselt was one of the great composer-virtuosos of the 19th century (his concerto is reckoned to be perhaps the hardest of them all!) with an immediately approachable style. Piers has just recorded these Henselt Etudes so asked if he could include them and he will introduce them from the platform. ++++++++ WALK FOR HEALTH FOR HOSPICE Come to the ASCOT RACE COURSE on THURSDAYS AT 4pm to 6pm and WALK For Your HEALTH while you help to raise funds for BULAWAYO ISLAND HOSPICE SERVICE Bring and Walk with your Friends. There seems to be many conflicting statements recounting the accident on Samora Machel cnr Rhodesville Ave on Friday the 13th of August 2004 where a lady, Mrs. Diane Hewitt tragically passed away. We know that so many people were at the scene of the accident, saw it happen and/or arrived shortly afterwards. We ask that perhaps they could come forward and help by sharing what they saw, and in trying to help the family and the police find out exactly what happened. If you were there or know of someone who was, please could you contact either: Gary Hewitt 091 341 334 or Sam Hewitt on 490 416/091 315 768 or John Falkenberg 333192/011 403 172 +++++++ ANTI HIJACK TRUST BULAWAYO UPDATE 20/08/04 Attempted hijackings seem to be on the increase again, and I need these statistics if you have become a victim of an attempted or a full blown hijacking. House break-ins with families in their homes and held at gun point is still a regular occurrence, even to the point of men walking in when people have friends over for dinner or braais. Do not think for one minute that you are safe with numbers, remember these robbers do have weapons and you have to think of yourself and your family first before trying to do any heroics. Again, I need these statistics and I will help you with your trauma if you have suffered from this terrible crime. I STRESS in most circumstances, you will not be quick enough to react with a weapon of your own, as these men are there to subdue you and always have the element of surprise on you, the victim. Only if you think you can handle the situation and are ready to use a weapon, knowing the consequences of such actions, be it to your own detriment either physically or through the courts, then remember that is your decision and yours alone. In this update, I would like people to understand about Post Traumatic Stress. This is a recognised medical condition and occurs after a stressful trauma like, hijackings or being held at gunpoint in one's own home or in town. There are a number of symptoms that go with it, and I shall mention a few. Memory loss Loss of appetite Nightmare of the incident happening again High or low blood pressure If you suffer with any of these or other symptoms, please do call me for help or join the support group which meets once a month, every third Tuesday at 1:30. For more details, please contact me so that I can tell you the venue etc. Hot areas at present in Bulawayo for gangs slashing tyres and surrounding cars is the whole of Robert Mugabe Street from 14th Avenue towards Leopold Takawira Avenue. Behind Haddon & Sly shop and 13th Avenue/ George Silundika St are a number of attempted hijackings, grabbing of bags and cell phones from owners cars. 9th Avenue/Fife Street is also terrible with people hitting the cars and taking you off guard then grabbing goods from your seats (when they should be in the boot!). I have also had people coming forward and stating how they are getting followed from the Banks. If you feel that the tellers are involved, you must get hold of the security for that particular bank, and I do not mean the guards, but each bank has their own internal security. Deal with them directly. Gangs break up outside making one follow the victim inside and to listen to what they have and then they congregate again outside and will follow either by foot or car, so be aware at all times when going to the banks. If you are dealing with wages or huge withdrawals for companies, take at least 2 other people with you. Never go alone! Remember your life is more important than losing it for the sake of your company. You are not indispensable that they will not replace you! If you would like me, Tracey Burns, to give a speech to a group, company or school, please do not hesitate to contact me on 011-701 323 or email me: crime@mweb.co.zw I also help with care-giving to victims of hijackings or house break-ins. Those people who wish to donate anything to the Trust, please make sure you deal with me directly or I can give the go ahead via other people that I know and trust, as I don't want anything handed to someone stating they are a member of the Trust and they actually aren't. There is far too much collar & tie fraud around at present. Thank you to those few members of public that have offered donations, since my last news letter with it's wish list. Take great care out there Tracey ++++++ Do people know that Tom Benyon is coming to speak to British War Veterans at the Bulawayo Club on 2nd Sept at 5 p.m. ? They are life long friends, someone rang my mother in UK to ask for an email address so they can be in contact but my father said they didn't have one, not realising I could do it for them, nor did he ask for their email contact details. So if any of Connie's family or anyone who knows how I can find her could contact me I shall be eternally grateful. Her daughter is Lynette Evans, grandchildren Heath and Tanya Evans. ++++++ From: Liz Downing Date: 07 July, 2004 Comments Hello in Bulawayo - beautiful city as I remember it from my days at Eveline. I am looking for my sister in law, Gail du Preez or her children, Guy, Sally Ann, Clare (Grobler) and Antoinette. Her brother Dick, would dearly love to hear from any one of them after 40 years. If anyone knows their whereabouts, please contact me on chitumbu@yahoo.co.uk +++++++ Cary Dorman Date: 27 April, 2004 My wife Barbara and I are Americans who will be traveling to Zim in May and June. We have dear friends, Peter and Anthea Nash, who lived outside Filabusi. They lost their land and since that time none of my letters to them have been answered. If you know the Nash family or know anyone or a source I could e-mail to help us locate them I would be forever in your debt. This web site shows the Nash's had an advertisement for a television for their apartment in Bulawayo in April 2003. I tried calling the cell-number , o 11613614, to no avail. Please , if you have any thoughts on how to locate these wonderful people write to wcd@hdlsl.com.
